Be it known that I, CARL WALTER, a resi:-
' dent ot' the cityv ot' Cincinnati, in the county olf lHamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful [improvements in Slide Rests ibr-Lathes,'ot' ,which the followingis a specification Thetirst part of my invention comprises a peculiar `combination of devices for reciprocating the slide-restv of a lathe transversely of the shears, the rest being arranged4 so :is to be operated with a screw when'a gradual and slow feed is required, while a rapid movemenit aS The second part of my invention comprises an instrumentality for shifting the slide-rest carriage longitudinally ot' the shears, the principal feature of this improvement being a hand-lever, whose rear end is pivoted to a shiftable fulcrum-clainp, which latteris capable of being secured at any desired position on one of the lathe-shears.4 This lever is coupled to the sliderest carriage by connecting-rods that can readily be detached, when it is desired to move said carriage by the feedscrew ofthe lathe.

Adapted to be shifted longitudinally of these shears is a bed-plate, B, whose undercut guides b b confine to a rectilinear path the slide C, from which projects the tool-post D, the latter being provided with a customary set-screw, d, for retaining the tool securely in position. under side of this slide is provided with a longitudinal groove, c, within which is located a nut, E, which latter is secured to said slide either with-a shank, c, or otherwise.

The extreme forward end of bed-plate B is furnished with a recess, L, that is adapted to receive a collar, M, ot screw G, by which 'means any longitudinal shifting ot' said screw is prevented. N is -a hand-wheel or crank wherewith the screw is rotated.
Projecting vertically from bed-plateV B is a bracket, O, whose horizontal armo has pivoted to it a pair of links, P, that are connected to a lever, R, having a handle, if, and a downwardly-projecting stud, S. This stud is adapted to engage with either ot' the perforated lugs T T', that project horizontally from the toolpost D.
The bracket O is slotted at the lower end to receive a screw or bolt, U, wherewith said bracket is secured to the bed-plate ot' the rest.
Lugs Vor their equivalent devices may be employed for maintaining the bracket in a vertical position.
W is a dog, pivoted to bed-plate B at w, and provided with a screw, Q, whose inner end is adapted to hear against the rear end of plate B, and thereby force the dog so tightly against shear A as to prevent any shifting of the rest longitudinally ofthe shears.
