This invention relates to oil `lters as used on automotive vehicles.
It is 4the object of the invention to conl struct a by-passarrangement whereby the oil will be allowed to pass back to the working parts of the -engine when the filter becomes clogged or refuses to function. Ordi-f narily the oil passes from the inlet port through the filter and out at the outlet port going through the filter. I make use of a ball valve held on its seat by a coil spring and when the oil pressure becomes suiiiciently great, such as will be the case when the filter refuses to function the ballvalve will be lifted oii' its seat againstthe pressure of the spring and allow the oil to ow past the valve and through the passage without passing through the filter. v

Referring to Figure 1,' 10 designates the lter, 11 the filtering material, 12 the cover, 13 the inlet pipe, and 14 the outlet pipe, while the by-pass arrangement is indicated as a whole at .I y l The inlet pipe enters'thelter cover at its center' d'- causes the oil to flow through a plug ving a central bore or passage 16 1n co ication with the central 'passage 17 at "s antially the mid" portion of the lteringA material. v
The voil after reaching the passage 17 passes through the filtering material 11 up through the bore or passage 28 in a plug 29 iXed'l-f'n the filter cover, past the ball valve 30, andl into the outlet conduit 27. The purpose of the ball`30 is to prevent the return of oil from the by-pass passage 2O,l 26 back to the lter through the bore 28.
By referring to Figure 1, it will be noted that the filtering medium 11 is secured at its center in a groove 40 of the plug 15 by means of a wire 4l. At its outer portion the filter- -ing medium is supported by a suitable memf ber 42 which may be a screen or a perforated metal plate. lThis member 42 is secured to a flange 43 projecting downwardly from the inside of ther cover or closure 12. The flange openings 18 and at the outer terminus of which there is a peripheral groove 19. The plug 15 is inclosed by a cap C threaded thereon and a washer W is used to'make a liquid tight joint. The groove 19 is in communication with a conduit 20 normally held closed by a ball valve 21, resting on the seat 22, and held in place by means of a coil spring 23. The coil spring 23 is retained on the ball by means of a plug 24, threaded at 25, into an `opening in the by-pass arrangement which is integral with the cover l2. From the conduit 20 a second conduit 26 leads to the outlet passage orconduit 27 the purpose of which is to form a passageway 20, 26 from the groove 19 to the outlet 'pipe 14, independent of the filter. y
A test valve 31, integral with the cover 12, is provided as an auxiliary device to the bypass arrangement. The purpose of the test valve is to determine whether the filter is functioning. The test valve structure is likewise formed in the cover and isadjacent to and generally parallel to the conduit 27 and comprises a bore 32 extending upwardly v. through the filter cover 12 and communicatopenings 39 at its innermost end. The operation of the by-pass arrangement per se is as`-follows: The voil will enter the inlet pipe-13, ,pass into the central channelh17, through the filtering material 11, up through the bore 28, past the ball valve 30, into the conduit 27, intol the outlet pipe A14:. During this operation, the spring 23 is of sufficient strength to hold the ball valve 21 on its seat 22 to prevent any oil from ,flowingthru the passage 20, 26 to the outlet pipe 14. Should thefilter become clogged, then instead of the oil passing to the central passage 17 it will be delivered through the radial openings 18, into the groove 19, conduit 20, past'the ball valve 21 (which will be forced from, its seat against the tension of the spring 23 by the oil pressure), into the conduit 26, for delivery to conduit 27, and from where it passes into the outlet pipe 14. During this latter operationthe ball valve 30 will be pressed against its seat on-the plug 29 to the bore 28.
Y I claim':
v1. In an oil filter,.a closure for one end 'of said filter, inlet and outlet passages in said closure, a passageway in said closure connecting saidinlet and outlet passages, a valve for controlllng said passageway, and a plug in said inlet having a plurality of openings and .a peripheral groove, to allow the ilow of oil to said passageway.
2. In an oil filter, a closure for one end of said lter, inlet and outlet passages in said closure, a passageway in said closure connecting said inlet and outlet passages, a valve for controlling said passageway, and a ported plug in said inlet to allow the How o f oil to said passageway, said ilter having a filtering medium secured to said plug.
3. In an oil filter, a closure for one end 01"' said filter, inlet and outlet passages in said closure, a passageway in said closure connecting said inlet and outlet passages, a valve for vcontrolling said passageway, meansin said inlet to allow the flow of oil to said 'passageway, a filtering medium secured at its center to said closure, and means remote from the center of said closure for securing said filter- -ing medium at its outer portion to said closure.
^ 4. In an oililter, a closure for one end of the filter, oil inlet and outlet passages for said filter 1n said closure, a passageway in said closure between said inlet and outlet passages .to at times permit the low of oil directly i ABRAHAM M. BABITCH.
