IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,726, dated April 4, 1876; application filed January 19, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, JOHN MEEK, of the city of Baltimore, and in the State of Maryland, have invented a Rein Guide or Holder for Horses and Vehicles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which I Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, an elet'ation;.Fig. 3, an illustration of its application.

The object of my invention is to support the rein rest or loop by means of a single jointed removable rod, provided with a snapjointin orderto bend the rest down when not wanted, and a floor socket on the vehicle for the temporary support of the rod.

In the drawings, A A represents a metal rod made in two parts, jointed-at bin the middle, and of such a height as will carry the reins sufiiciently elevated to be free from being caught or struck by the drat't-aninmls tails, and having a rest or guide, a, on the summit of the upper rod for the reception of said reins.

The joint b which permits the rod to be foldeddown, is provided at its back with a springcatch and book 61 d, the hook d entering the recess 0 sunk in. the lower rod in such a manner as to hold the catch and rod rigidly erect.

The lower end of the lower rod is set in a socket, B, screwed to the floor of the vehicle or other convenient place by screws in a projecting flange or plinth, g, so as to admit of ready removal of the whole apparatus, if desired. The bottom of the rodis provided with a rib, f, fitting into a corresponding groove in the side of the recess of the socket, or a lug may be employed in place of said rib, which may pass down the socket into a circular horizontal groove in said socket, into which it may pass by a slight rotation of the rod, and so prevent all danger of the latter being thrown out. The rod may also be made to screwinto a socket for security, but the described fastening is found to be the best.

What I claim as my invention is-- The combination of the spring-catch and hook d d, recess 6, hinged jointed folding rods A A, and socket B, constructed and adapted for the purpose as shown and described.
