IMPROVEMENT IN GRINDSTONE JOURNALS AND HANGERS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 75,647, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON L. BIGNALL, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grindstone-Hangers, of which the following is a specification The nature of the present invention consists in shaft-hangers which are provided with adjustable boxes, whereby the shaft of the stone may have a proper level bearin g, notwithstanding the frame on which the hanger is placed be not level. The end parts of the hanger-box are provided with cups to hold cotton waste, or other like substance, for holding oil, that the shaft may be supplied with lubricating substance for a long period of time.
The object of the invention is to provide a grindstone hanger which may be attached to a grindstone-frame by means of the ordinary farm-hand, and ope ate perfectly where the convenience of skilled labor or tools are not in reach or not desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my improvement in grindstone-hangers,remo'ved from its supporting-frame, but showing the end of the grindstone-shaft; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the hanger on line a, Fig. 1 Fig. 3, a transverse sectional elevation of Figs. 1, 2, on line 2.
N represents the cast-metal frame, which is supported by the frame-piece E, being on one side of the grindstone, a similar frame-piece being on the opposite side of the stone, in the usual manner. The iron frame N is provided with two semicircular bearings, F, Figs. 2 and 3, to support the ends 0 0' of a rock-bar or adjustable box, B, which is provided with a bearing, G, for a grindstone-shatt, J. The ends 0 being free to turn in the bearings F, the box B adjusts itself to the line of shaft J, if the top of frame E be not level. In the end portions of the box B, at D D, are formed cups to receive cotton waste or other substance for taking up oil and imparting it to the shaft J as required. A top view of the cups is shown at Fig. 1, the cap holding the shaft J in the box Gr being removed. At Fig. 2 the cap A, for
' clamping the parts together for use, is hinged to the frame N, and its opposite end is held in position by one of the screws P or bolts which secure the hanger to the frame F. The oil-port is to be closed by a plug, H. In practice, two boxes are to be used.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the adjustable box B, provided with oil-cups D, in combination with the'frame N and cap A, as and for the purpose specified.
SOLOMON L. BIGNALL.
