Description

J. WYETH. COMPRESSED CHLORIDE 0F AMMONI'U'M. No.175,583. Patented A'pril, 1876.
WITNESSES: I I 11W Jim 5. %mM;. a s/W UNITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
JOHN WYETH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPRESSED CHLORIDE OF AMMONIUM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,583, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WYETH, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Preparation of Chloride of Ammonium, of which the following is a-specification:
The object of my invention is to provide means for conveniently utilizing the absorbent and resolvent properties of chloride of ammonium in its application to the removal of cutaneous excrescences, &c.; to which end my improvements consist, first, in a cylinder 01' rod of chloride of ammonium formed by .compression in a die or mold; and, second, in the combination of a compressed rod of chloride of ammonium and a casing or hand-piece of paper, paste-board, leather, or the like, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the treatment, locally, of cutaneous affections or excrescences by chloride of ammonium the muriate of ammonia, or sal-alnmoniac of commerce, the salt has been heretofore used in powder or in lumps broken from cakes, and
cannot be conveniently or economically applied.
My improvements are designed to furnish an article in suitable form for transportation and salc,.and applicable by the patientwithout inconvenience or waste.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a view, in perspective, of a preparation embodying my improvements 5 and Fig. 2, a 1011- gitudinal section of the same.
To carry out the object of my invention I take chloride of ammonium, reduce it to powder, and form it into rods or cylinders A, of any convenient size, by compression in suitably-shaped molds or dies. A rod thus formed will be found to possess a smooth and polished surface, and to cohere strongly, and by moistening one end and applying it to the diseased part of the skin a thin film or coating of the salt will be spread thereon, and this can be similarly renewed as often as may be requisite without soiling the bands or clothing.
For greater convenience in use I prefer to provide each rod with a casing or hand-piece, B, which is secured to one ot its ends, and may be of paper, pasleboard, leather, or other suitable material, thus providing a medicinal appliance in the form of a neat toilet article.
I am aware that chloride of ammonium has been heretofore compressed into cakes, and do not, therefore, broadly, claim the preparation thereof by compression.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, a cylinder or rod of compressed chloride of ammonium, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a rod of compressed chloride of ammonium and a casing or handpiece, substantially as set forth.
JOHN WYETH.
