UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. WEDDEL, OF MOUNT (JARROLIQILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHNII. DEEDS, 0F SAME PLACE.-
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED REIN-HOLDERS AND-WH'lP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,537, dated March 28, 1876; application filed January 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, J. W. WEDDEL, of Mount OarrolhCarroll county, State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Combined v Rein-Holder and Whip-Socket, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a combined whipsocket and rein holder, in which the Whip and reins are secured by the same spring-clamp, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the frame or main portion of the device. Figs. 3 to 7, inclusive, represent the remaining parts of the device detached and separate.
The said frame is composed of a hollow boxlike part, A, and a parallel vertical semi-cylindrical extension, S, connected together at the base. The metal plate 0, Figs. 1, 7, having fo'ot R and curved top 1), forms, in connection with said extension S, the socket for the whip, the plate being of suitable width and length to fill the space between the vertical edges of the extension, as shown, Fig. l. The reins are held between this plate 0 and a sliding box or flangedplate, B, which fits into the B O by the same means and with the same force as the whip is clamped between parts 0 and S. The frontX of box B is extended at the top and curved backward, forming a lip, H, which facilitates insertion of the reins in the clamp. The part A is provided with brackets G, whereby the device may be attached to the dasher of the wagon or carriage.
What I claim is- In a combined whip-socket and reinholder, the combination of a'movable plate for clamping the whip, a sliding box or plate for clamping the reins, and a spring arranged to act on both said plates, .in the manner shown and described.
