This invention relates to ame reducing means for lighting cigarettes and li e inflammable articles and its object is to\ combine such lighter with a walking stick, cane, um-
brella, et cetera.
The habit of smoking is well nigh universal and so to is that of carrying a stick by gentlemen.
Carrying an ordinary lighter in the pocket l0 is objectionable because of its bulkiness and liability of leakage; furthermore the lame of such lighters is easily blown out by the wind.
It is therefore'an object of this invention to provide a lighter so combined with the bod of a common cane as to be entirelyconceale except when required for use, and which is exposed and ignited by merely moving a sliding ferrule in one direction, a reverse movement of the ferrule quenching the flame, cap- I ping the wick and completely obscuring the operative parts of the lighter.
A further feature is in the provision of a lighter, including a reservoir for the liquid fuel used, having parts which re-enforce the cane structure and present no objectionable 4features whatever.
These important features are attained by the combination of parts as herein described, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which y Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device as applied to a common type of cane in an enclosed position.
Figure 2 is a similar view ofthe same showing the ferrule raised and the lighter in an operative position.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken in a plane indicated by the line 3--3 of Figure 2.

The upper end of the sleeve 13 has an extending -annular flan e- 18 equivalent in diameter to the cane bofgly 10 and is recessed in its under side to receive a portion of the body forming a tight joint in the manner of an annular tenon and mortise joint, the sleeve being permanently fixed in the cane.
Held in the sleeve 13, by screw threads 19 at its upper end, is a casing 20 having a thick- 65 ened flanged head 21 of lesser diameter than the flange 18 on which it seats. The head 21 may be provided with a hardened partial band 21 to avoid undue wear by frictional contact with the ferrule 12 when operated. j The casing 20 contains opposed longitudinal slots y22 open at its lower end and turned at right angles at 22', terminating in raised notches 22".
A thin walled cylindrical reservoir 23 is slidably received in the casing 20, entering from its lower open end and having an outwardly anged bottom member 24, the res ervoir being also provided with a pin 25 passed diametricall therethrough, its ends engaging in the s ots 22 and their offset notches.
The upper end of the reservoir 23 is fixe to a disc 26, fitting within the flange 21, havof brackets 28 at the front and a burner tube 29 at the rear.
The tube is sup lied with a wick 30 extending downwards through the disc into a mass of absorbent material 31 saturated ,with a liquid fuel, the same being supplied through an opening in the bottom 24 provided with a hollow screw plug 32, the outer end of the plug being flanged and recessed to receive a packing 33, and terminating in a knob 34 by which it may be turned.

Fixed in the ends 24 and 26 of the reservoir 23, to extend longitudinally therethrough, is a tube 38, threaded at its lower end to receive `an adjusting screw 39 having a knurled head at its outer end and an elongated stem 39 entering into the tube to adjust the compression of a coiled spring 40 abutting a piece of the spark material 35 to press it against an abradin wheel 41.
'he abrader 41 is mounted to rotate ffreetlly o t e upon a stud 42 set in the elements bracket 28, the stud assing through the side members 43 of a bloc 44, recessed on its rear or inner side to carry a pawl 45, ivoted between the block sides and presse into operative engagement with the teeth of the abrader by a spring 46 coiled about a pin 47 on n which the awl pivots.
The bloc 44, carrying the abrader pawl, is normally forced outwardl through an e1- liptical opening 48 in a cyllnder 49 formed on the flange 21, the tube extending upwardly to engage the lower end of the upper part 11 of the cane, a cup shaped guard 50 intervenin ,held by a screw 51 and spurs on the inner sie of the cup.
pin 53, set in the brackets 27, has coiled about it a spring 54 having an arm 54 engaging a pin 55 set in the side of the block 44 to urge the block outwardly, the other arm 54 of the spring seating on the disc 26.
The cylinder 49 has a flat surfaced inreaching ortion 49 at one side constituting a brac et in which is a screw 56 serving as a pivot for a cam 57, one portion 57 of which extends outwardlv through a slot 58 in the wall of the c linder 49 into the path of the ferrule 12, w en it is in a raised osition, as seen in Figure 2, to be actuated by the ferrule when moved down to its normal position, and to be enveloped by the ferrule when it is in a lowered position as shown in Figure 1.
The opposite end 57 of the cam is hookshaped to engage a pin 59 set in the side of the block 44, which, due to the action of the spring 54, raises the cam end 57 against the end of the slot 58 when the block is forced outwardly, such action occurring when the ferrule 12 is fully raised.
In order to avoid excessive movement of the block 44, a stop pin 60 is set in the bracket 28, to engage the under side of the block when thrust outwardly and also to contact with a lug 44 on the block when it is in a raised position, at which time the cam element 57 enters a recess in the head 21.
Fixed to the inside of the ferrule 12, near its lower end is a block 61 movable in a slot 62 in the cylinder 49, and having an inreaching chambered portion 631to cover the burner tube 29, acting as a snufer for the wick when the ferrule is ina normal lowered position, resting on thevflange A18, to which it is held by aspring lip 12 engaging a recess in the flange 21.
Whenthe ferrule is raised, as in Figure 2, the block passes through an opening 50 in the guard 50 to enter a recess 64 in the upper section 11 of the stick.
In order to cause an instantaneous action of the abrader 41 on the sparking material 35, and thereb throw a stream of sparks upon the exten ing end of the saturated wick 30, the action is retarded until the snufer 62 has been lifted from the burner tube and the ferrule raised to disclose the greater portion of the casing tube o ening 48.
This is accomplis ed b y securin the upper end of a spring'detent wire 65 to t e cylinder element 49', the wire having a hump 65 passing freely through a passage 66 1n the element 49 and a lower inreachin end 65 to engage the u per edge surface o the cam 57, retainin it 1n its lowered, inoperative position until the lower edge of the ferrule has been raised past the hump whereupon the wire springs out and releases the detent from the cam, permittin the spring 54 to operate.
A pair of inreac ing, oppositely disposed lugs 67, fixed on the inner surface of the ferrule 12, engage in corresponding longitudinal recesses 68 in the cylinder 49 and its inner element 49', causin the ferrule to move in a rectilinear path w en actuated.
In operation the reservoir having been filled and disposed in the body of the stick, the ferrule is moved down to rest upon the flange 18, no break, unusual or objectionable appearance being observable. l
Upon raising the ferrule upwardly over the portion 11, a distance sufficient to disclose the opening 48, the wick 30 is caused to flame, duc to the sparks delivered to its exposed end, and the block 44 having been moved out of the wa a cigarette, cigar or the like may be enteredY through the o ening and lit from the flame, which is guar ed and enclosed in an effective manner.
When this has been done the ferrule lis pressed downwardly to its initial position, this action actuating the cam and retracting the block ready for further operations.
In the form shown in Figure 4, a stick with a knobbed top is shown,the same comprising a body 100 having a ferrule 101 slidable on the casing 49, as previously described, the ferrule having an expanded conical upper portion 102 flanged inwardl at the top and provided with a raised annu us 103.
Mounted on the annulus is a cap 104 having a depression 105 in its top from which extends an inreaching hub 106 provided with a recess 107.
A stem 108 is journalled in the hub 106 and provided with a transverse head 109 by which the stem may be turned within the limit of a stop pin 110 set therein and operative in the recess 107.
The stem 108 passes axially through a cover plate 111 on the lighter cylinder 49 and has at its inner end a lug 112 by which it is locked to the tube preventing inadvertent raising of the ferrule.
When it is desired to use the device the head 109 may be manually turned to move the lug 112 into registration with a slot 113 in the cover plate, permitting the entire knob and ferrule to be raised relative to the lighter bod 49, expose the opening 48 and light the wic in the manner before described, means being provided to limit the movement of the ferrule.
Although the foregoing is descriptive of the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may be made in its construction, without the exercise of invention or coniiictin with the scope of the claims hereto appended.
Havin thus -described the invention, what is claime as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is :v
1. A metallic cylinder having uniformly thick walls open at one side, a slidable ferrule to conceal or' disclose the opening, a lighter in the cylinder automatically controlled b said ferrule, a bracket extending inwardly om the Walls of said cylinder, and a cam pivoted on said bracket controlling the operation of said lighter.
2. A casing having upper and lower fixed elements, a cylinder having a lateral open-` ing normally forming a rigid unit therebetween, a slide movable on the cylinder and upper element of the casing, means for securing the casing elements to a support, and automatic means in the cylinder to generate and extinguish an igniting flame upon actuating said slide.
3. A sleeve having upper and lower portions, a tubular connection therebetween to form a rigid unit, a ferrule slidable on said connection, and means for producing an igniting flame in said connection upon movement of said ferrule in one direction and for extinguishing the flame when the ferrule is moved in the opposite direction.
4. 5. A metallic casing composed of two sections, a c linder connecting the sections, said cyllnder avmg a side opening, a ferrule slidable on said cylinder, a lighter body in said Y cylinder having a wick, a bracket on said body, a recessed block pivoted in the bracket, a spring to press the block outwardly through the cylinder opening against the ferrule, an abrading Wheel mounted on the axis of the block to deliver sparks to said wick, and means carried by said block to rotate the wheel when the ferrule is raised to permit the block to swing outwardly.
6. A metallic cylindrical casing composed of two sections, a cylinder connecting the sections, said cylinder having a side opening, a ferrule slidable on said cylinder, a lighter body in said cylinder having a wick, a bracket on said body, a recessed block pivoted in the bracket, a spring to press the block outwardly when the ferrule is raised, a sto for said block, an abrading wheel rotata le in the block, a awl to actuate the wheel, and a cap carried by said ferrule to cover the wick ywhen said ferrule is lowered.
7. A cylinder casing containing a lighter, said lighter comprising a cylinder having a lateral openin means in said casing to con tain liquid fue a wick and sparking material, a block pivoted to swing outwardly through an opening in the cylinder, an abrading wheel rotatable on the axis of said block in contact with the sparking material, a spring pressed pawl carried by said block to actuate the wheel, a cam pivoted in said cylinder to re tract said block, and a ferrule slidable on said cylinder, said ferrule being operative with respect to said cam.
8. A cylindrical casing containing a lighter, said lighter comprising a cylinder having a lateral opening, means in said casing to contain liquid fuel', a wick and sparking material, a block pivoted to swing outward] through an opening in the cylinder, an abradying wheel rotatable on the axis of said block in contact with the sparking material, a spring pressed pawl carried by said block to actuate the wheel, a cam pivoted in said tube to release and retract said block, a ferrule slidable on said cylinder to actuate said cam, and means to retard the movement of said cam until the 4ferrule has reached a definite height relative to the openin In testimony whereof I a x my si ature;
