This invention relates to improvements in full fashioned knitting machines and morel particularly it relates to an arrangement of needle bars and meansV for operating the same.
- An object of the invention is the provision of a support for two sets of needles, each set of needles to be independently adjustable on said support relative to the other knitting implements.
. Another object of the invention is to provide a support having thereon means for connection to oscillating means and also having thereon means for connection with lifting levers, the two said means being'fixed in relation to each other.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the features,
combination and arrangement of arts hereinafter described and particular y pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the yoke support and needle bars of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device connected with oscillating means and lifting 1evers forming no part of the present invention and therefore shown in dotted lines. In the drawings, 1 represents the yoke shaped support with a depending portion 2 having means at its lower end comprising transverse bore 3 for pivotal connection with f oscillating means 4.
The `support 1 hasflaterally disposed oppositely extending arms 5 and 6 providing fiat ineedlelbar supporting surfaces 12 at the upper surface of the support. The arms 5 and 6 are each provided with a pair of angularly depending hinge ears 7 and 8 near their outer ends. The pairs of hinge ears-7 and 8 are provided with transverse aligning bores 9, 9, 10 andlOa, each pair being adapted to receive therebetween a lifting lever 11.
It is to be noted that the support carries inl tegral therewith the means for pivotal connection with the lifting levers and the means for pivotalconnection with the oscillating means. In other words, the de ending portion 2 is fixed in relation to t e angularly depending hinge ears 7. and 8, and these parts being integral parts of the support 1, their relation is fixed and may not be altered. Y Mounted on the llat surfaces 12 of thesupport are two independent needle bars 13 and 4 14 in each of which a set of series of needles is set.
The needle bars are mounted for adjustment in a direction across the upper surface of the support to move the needles and adjust their position relative to the knitting implements. This invention provides the two needle bars on the support, each needle bar being entirely independent of the other, so far as adjustment of the bars on thesupport is concerned.
1 The support 1, carrying integral therewith the hinge ears and the depending member 2, is previded with vertical bores 15 of slightly larger diameter than clamping screws 16 to be received therein. The dierence in the diameter of the bore 15'and the screw 16 determines the extent of the adjustability of the bars relative to the support.
Lugs 17 are provided on the support opposite the bores 15, the lugs extending above the upper surfaces 12 on the side of the support opposite to the needle, and the lugs being horizontally vbored and threaded to receive adjusting screws 18, having lock nuts 19. The adjusting screws are adapted to engage, adjust, and control the position of the bars on the support and hence the position of the needles relative to the other knitting elements.
Vertical screw threaded bores 20 in the bars clamp screws 16, so that horizontal movement of the bars. on the support may be effected by operating the adjusting screws 18.
It is to be noted that adjustment of the bars does not entail any change in the relative position of the hinge ears and the s upport or its depending lever member 2, since these parts are integral. Change 1n the position of the hinge ears relative to the depending member 2 would cause undue tipping of the needles which is undesirable, and which the present invention is' designed to overcome.
Heretofore the two heads or sets of needles were mounted in a single bar, the depending operating lever for connection to the oscillating means being attached to the bar centrally thereof and the hinges being separately attached to the bar at or near its ends. lith such construction, diiliculty is encountered in keeping the needles in line, as the long bars will twist or warp, often rendering it necessary to take the bars out of the machine and peen them with a hammer or bend them back again to make them straight. Also, with such construction, in adjusting the needles in and out relative to the knitting implements, the angular position of the needles would be changed, due to the fact that .in adjusting the needle bar relative to the hinge ears, the relation between the hinge ears and the depending lever member separately attached to the needle bar, is ,changed and the angular position of the needles is thus altered, which is undesirable. In other words, with the known construction, the adjustment moves the needle bar and depending lever member as a unit relative to the hinge ears which results in :1n objectionable change in the angular disposition, of the needles.
With the structure of the present invention in which the depending lever member and hinge ears are integral, the two separate and independently adjustable shorter needle bars do not tend to twist or become otherwise distorted but are very easily kept in line, and the needle may be slid in or out without changin the angle.
t is a parent that modifications may be made wit in the scope of this invention and it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact structure shown.-
I claim:
1. In combination in a full fashioned knitting machine, a support for the needles with means for reciprocating said support vertically and for moving the same forwardly and backwardly, and a pair of needle clamping bars on said support, said support having a pair of spaced apart openings for each needle ar, the members of each air of openings located near the ends of the bar to they belong, and clam ing bolts passing through the openings, sai openings being larger in diameter than the diameter of the bolts to permit movement of adjustment of the bolts in al1 directions radially in respect to the axis of the openings, and means at each endof each bar for adjusting said bar, whereupon the clam ing bolts may be set to hold the bar in its a justed'position, said clamping bolts forming the sole means of connecting the needle bar with its support and permitting adjustment of the bar bodily to or from the knitting plane, or ivoted movement in respect thereto or lengt wise adjustment.
2. In combination in a full fashioned knitting machine, a support with means for moving it vertically and back and forth, two needle carrying bars arranged end to end,
-clamps connecting each of said needle carrying bars to the support, said clamps being spaced apart lengthwise of the needle carrying bar, each clamp having adjustment in all directions horizontally to permit each needle carrying bar to be bodily adjusted in any direction horizontally including an endwise adjustment, and means at or near each end of each needle carrying bar for adjusting said bar, said clamps when set holding thev needle carrying bar to which they belong in fixed relation to the support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof@ aix my signature.
