OIL BURNER Filed April 17, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 darleieryeg'mmm ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 15, 1930 EARL D. SORNBERGER, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA OIL BURNER Application filed April 17,
This invention relates to an oil burner, the general object of the invention being to provide a burner of simple construction and divided-into three chambers by a pair of partitions, with means for introducing the oil adjacent the outer side of each partition, pilot burners for igniting thevaporized oil and means for introducing air into the center chamber and a deflector member at the top which causes the flames to pass from the burner at each side thereof.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, ref
erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan view, with the cover removed.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates the body or bowl of the device which is preferably of rectangular shape at its top, with its bottom rounded and said bowl has a pair of upright partitions 2 therein which extend from end to end of the bowl and are spaced from the center, one at each side thereof. These partitions terminate an appreciable distance from the top of the bowl and each partition has a notch 3 at the center of its upper edge. The partitions divide the bowl into a center chamber and two side chambers. A longitudinal passage l is arranged in the bottom of the bowl, adjacent each partition and a slot 5 connects each passage with the interior of the bowl, the slot being arranged adjacent the outer wall of each partition. An oil pipe 6 is connected with these passages by the branch pipes 7 at one end of the device and the opposite ends of the passages are closed by 1929. Serial No. 355,892.
thescrew plugs 8 so that the passages can be cleaned, when desired. A large air pipe 9 is in con'imunication with the center chamber at the center thereof and a gas pipe 10 has the branches 11 connected with its inner end, the ends of thesebranch pipes being bent downwardly so as to ignite the oil vapors passing from the slots 5.
A substantially semi-circular-cover member 12 has notched portions of its side edges engaging the notches 13 formedinthe ends of the bowl atthe upper edges thereof so that the ends of the cover overlap the ends of the bowl and the side edges of the cover project into the bowl. This cover member encloses that portionof the bowl which carries the partitions and leaves side portions at the top of the bowl open for the escape of the flames. A depending partition 14; is formed on the center part of the cover.
The oil will fill the passages 4 and overflow through the slots 5 into the bowl and after the walls of the bowl are heated, this oil will be vaporized and the vapors will be ignited by the pilotfiames. The air from the pipe 9 will be deflected by the cover member 12 to both sides of the bowl, thus causing the air to mix with the vapors to insure proper combustion and the flames will pass from the spaces left by the cover member at each side of the bowl.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple and inexpensive form of burner which will produce an intense heat in the furnace or other device in which it is used.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. An oil burner of the class described comprising a bowl, a pair of upright partitions therein spaced from the center thereof, said bowl having passages in its bottom and a slot connecting each passage with the interior of the bowl each slot being adjacent the outer side of a partition, a pilot burner for igniting the oil flowing from each slot, means for in troducing air into the space between the two artitions and a cover member seated on the W1 above the parts thereof carrying the partitions and leaving spaces at the sides of the bowl.
2. An oil burner of the class described comprising a bowl, a pair of upright partitions therein spaced from the center thereof, said bowl having passages in its bottom and a slot connecting each passage with the interior of the bowl, each slot being adjacent the outer side of a partition, a pilot burner for igniting the oil flowing from each slot, means for introducing air into the space between the two pgrtitions and a cover member seated on the W1 above the parts thereof carryin the partitions and leaving spaces at the sides of the bowl, said cover member being of substantially semi-cylindric shape and having a depending partition at its center.
3. An oil burner of the class described comprising a bowl of substantially trough shape, a. pair of upright partitions in the bowl, each spaced from the center thereof, means for introducing air through the bottom of the bowl into the space between the partitions, means for introducin oil into the spaces adjacent the outer si es of the partitions, pilot burners extendin into the oil receiving spaces and a remova le cover member of semi-circular shape in cross section seated on the top of the bowl and covering the spaces thereof in which the partitions are arranged and leaving the sides of the bowl open at the top and a depending partition at the center of the cover.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature.
