The present invention relates to a combined change tray and advertising device, and has as its object to provide a simple and effective device of this sort having various features of J- novelty and advantage.

More particularly, an aim of the invention is to provide a device of this sort having a change tray from which the customer may easily and conveniently pick up the change and, in the act of doing so, automatically, and without effort, move or operate a sign or advertising notice, thereby more forcibly directing the customers attention to the advertised product. a

In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the change tray is pivoted and carries suitable .advertising matter or indicia so that, when the customer slides his hand over the tray in the act of removing the change therefrom, the tray will tip or. swing, and the movement of the tray will attract the customers interest to the advertising matter. Also, there is provided, in combination with the tiltable tray, a sign, slogan or expression of appreciation, such as the words Thank you which is normally concealed but which is automatically brought into view when the customer removes the change from the tray.

3 A further aim of the invention is to provide a combined change tray and advertising device which is relatively simple in construction, which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost, which is effective in operation, and which is of neat and pleasing design.

Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out more in detail herein after. H V

The invention accordingly consists inthe features of construction, combination of elements and. arrangements of parts'which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will :be indicated in the appended claims.

In'the drawings, wherein I have shown, for illustrative purposes, two embodiments which the present invention may take:

Referring to the drawings in detail, designates .a support on which the change tray 11 is pivoted. This support, in the present illustrative disclosures of the invention, is in the form of a strip or strap of metal with its ends turned up, as at 12. This support or strap may be mounted or supported in any suitable manner, as, for example, upon the {1 intu-rned .en ds of vertical standards 13 which are connected to the opposite sides of a box or receptacle 14;. This receptacle 14 is adapted to contain articles of sale, preferably the products which are advertised by the device.

It may have on it any suitable indicia -designating or describing the products of sale. The tray .11 has-a change receiving surface or portion 15 which is preferably surrounded by a raised peripheral edge or rib 1 6, the in nerperiphery of which is inclined, as illustrated, so that the customer may easily slide the change to the edge of this surface, where upon the change will ride up the inclined surface where it may be easily gripped ibetween the fingers and removed. The change receiving portion or member of the tray may be formed integrally withthe tray or may 'be of a separate-part and secured thereto. The tray portion 11 is preferably formed of sheet metal and has its edges bent downwardly so as to form a front depending flange 17,,

end flanges 18 and a rear flange 19. These flanges, and also the surface of the tray about the change receiving'surface, are adapted to bear suitable.advertisingmatter directing the attention of the customer to the qualities, merits andusesof the articles sold. The tray .11. has, adjacent one of its torwaiidcomers a slot 20, the purpose of which will be described hereinafter more in detail.

The tray is pivoted on a rod 25, the ends of which extend through aligned openings in the upturned ends or lugs 12 and in the end flanges 18 of the tray. The rod may be secured against withdrawal by nuts 26 and, to revent end play of the tray, there may be interposed between the flanges 18 and the lugs 12 spacing sleeves 27 The arrangement so far described'is common to both embodiments shown in the drawings.

Referring to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3, 30 designates a suitable sign which is normally concealed by the tray when the latter is in horizontal position and which is brought into View upon the customer removing the change from the change tray surface 15.

This member 30 is preferably formed of sheet metal and is pivoted beneath the tray on a rod 31 which is supported in ears 32 upstanding from a bracket 33 riveted or otherwise secured to the support 10. The forward end of the chamber 30 is bent upwardly and rearwardly so as to form a portion 34, the front face of which is adapted to bear a suitable sign, such, for example, as the words Thank you, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper edge of this portion 34 has a back-turned flange or lip 35 which lies in, and to a large extent conceals, the slot 20 when the change tray is in normal horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear end'of the member30 is bent back upon itself in order to form a finger 36 which is provided with a boss 37 adapted to engage the under side of the tray 11. The member 30 is in the form of a lever, the arm of which having the finger 36 is relatively shorter than the other arm carrying the signportion 34 so that, upon a relatively small tilting movement of the change tray, the movement of the sign 34 is magnified so that it is projected up through the slot 20 where it is brought to the attention of the customer as the latter is removing the change from the tray. For the purpose of limiting the downward swinging movement of the member 30, there is provided a stop 40 which is in the form of a trip secured to and extending forwardly from the support 10. For the purpose of limiting the extent to which the change tray may pivot, there is secured to the support 10 a stop member in the form of a strap 41 having its rear end turned upwardly, as at 42, and its forward end 43 also turned upwardly but to a lesser extent. The turned up end or stop'42 is adapted to engage the bottom of the tray to hold the tray in normal horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. The forward upturned portion or stop 43 is adapted to limit the downward swin ing movement of the tray. The chan e tray 1s more or less balanced so that but lit-t efiort is required to tilt the same. In order to insure that the tray is automatically brought back to the normal position shown in Fig. 2, there may be secured to the rear flange 19 a weight 45.

In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the change tray is adapted to tilt in the same manner as in the preceding embodiment but in this instance the sign member 30 is fixed to the support 10. The forward end of the member 30 is turned upwardly and rearwardly so as to form a sign portion 34 which is received by the slot 20 when the tray is depressed. Secured to the member 30 is a stop member 41, the rear end 42 and the front end 43 of which are turned upwardly. These portions 42 and 43 serve the same purpose as the corresponding portions 42 and 43 of the preceding embodiment.

It will be observed that, in each embodiment of the invention, the tray is so mounted that it is tilted by the customer when the latter attempts to remove the change from the change tray and, at the same time, a Thank you sign is automatically brought into view. By permitting tilting movement of the tray, the change may be more easily and readily removed while, at the same time, such movement will naturally attract the customers attention so that the advertising matter will be more forcibly impressed upon him. The devices may be placed upon a counter for convenient use and, as previously pointed out, they may be associated with or carried by a box or receptacle containing the goods advertised. The devices are very simple in construction, may be cheaply made, and are effective in operation.

As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a combined change tray and advertising device, a normally horizontal change tray having a slot adjacent its forward edge, means for supporting said tray for limited tilting movement, and a sign supported by said means and having an upwardly extending sign portion in registry with said slot, said sign beingnormally beneath and concealed by said tray, and said sign portion extending upwardly through said slot and above the tray when the tray is tilted in the act of removing change therefrom.

2. In a combined change tray and advertising device, a support, a rod carried thereby, a change tray pivoted on said rod and having a slot adjacent its forward edge, a stop'memher having one end adapted to engage said tray to hold the same in horizontal position and having its other end arranged to limit the downward and forward tilting movement of the tray, and a sign member normally beneath said tray and having a sign portion adapted to extend upwardly through said slot and above said tray when the tray is tilted.

3. In acombined change tray and advertising device, a receptacle in which articles to be sold are displayed, standards arising therefrom, a support on said standards, a change tray pivoted on said support, and a sign normally concealed by said tray, said tray and sign being relatively movable whereby said sign is exposed to view when said tray is tilted.

4. In a combined change tray and advertising device, a normally horizontal change tray having a slot adjacent its forward edge, means for supporting said tray for limiting tilting movement, a sign member pivoted beneath said tray and having a forwardly extending arm carrying on its forward end a sign portion adapted to extend up through said slot when the tray is tilted, said sign member having a rearwardly extending arm of lesser length than the first arm and adapted to be engaged by said tray to swing said sign when the tray is tilted.
