IMPROVEMENT lN RECORDING TABLES OR DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 75.432, dated March 28, 1876 application filed January 25, 1876.

To all 4whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CORUM, of Greenup, county of Greenup, State of Kentucky, have invented an Improved Recording Table,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof.

My invention relates to a recording-table in which a portion of its top is made verticallyl adjustable, so as to bring the pagesof a book laid upon said adjustable portion on a level with the surrounding surface of the table; and my invention has for its object the adj ustability, laterally, in the table of the said vertically-adjustable portion; and also the adaptability of the table to ordinary uses when not employed for recording; and my invention consists of the combination of the parts hereinafter particularly specified, when arranged to operatev as described.

Figure 1 is a plan of a table embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an under-side view of the same 5 and Fig. 3 is a sectional viewl on the line x Fig` 2, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the part af, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the line y y, Fig. 4.

In the drawings is shown a table, in which the portions or leaves A Al are adjust-able vertically below and up to the level of the surface of the table by means of screws s working in nuts n, the said screws having hand-wheels w, by which to operate them. A portion ofthe top of the table is cut away, as seen at b, and the leaves A A are arranged in said opening side by side, with a space, b', between them, as shown. These leaves are arranged parallel with the edge of. the table, from which, extending inward, the opening b is made, so that a person sitting at the table with his right side to the edge of the table at B will have the leaves A A before him in a suitable position to hold a book for recording. The leavesA A are connected to their screws s bv the metal blocks c, and the said screws depend underneath the table, through the nuts n, in which they work, and which nuts are mounted on a transverse wooden brace, d. To support the leaves A A and guide them while being adjusted either higher or lower, I provide the iron braces d. These braces are made in the form of. right angles, and one is placed at each end of each of the leaves A A', upon the under side thereof, and secured thereto by one are mounted in the side frames f, as shown.

These side frames fare joined together at their rear or inner ends by the piece g, and at their front ends by theportionof the side board g of thetable. The transverse woodenl brace d, which supports the screw-uuts n, extends from the front board g to the rear end piece g, and the cross-brace h" extends from 011e side frame fto the other, being united to the brace d, as shown. A frame-work, C, is then formed independent of the frame of the table itself, and carrying the leaves A A and their mechanism for adjusting them vertically. This frame() is arranged to be extended beyond the edge of the table by moving in the slides D, which extend laterally across the table, the leaves, therefore, being carried in, and by this frame C havealateral adj ustabilityin the table. This lateral adj ustabilityis ofgreatimportanee to the writer, for the Writer, being seated at the table, as hereinbefore stated, and having filled the page ofthe book which rests over the leafA, he can, by sliding out the frame() into the position shown by the (lottedlines in Fig. 1, bring the page resting over the leafl A into the place just occupied by the leaf A, when the page over the leaf A will be suitably and conveniently in position to be written upon, the surface of the table furnishing, at all times, a rest for the writers arm. The ends of the leaves A A' are beveled outwardly, as shown at m, while the corresponding edges of the opening b are reversely beveled, as shown at m. A strip, a, is provided to iill up the openingbetween the leaves A A which opening is adapt ed to receive the back ot' the book placed upon the leaves, when the table is used in recording. This strip is formed with a'iiat upper face, inwardly-sloping sides, and outwardly-beveled ends n', to fit snugly into said opening b', as shown in detail in Figs. fl. and 5. It is evident, therefore, that when the table is not employed for recording, by inserting the strip e in the opening b', and Vscrewing the tables A and A snugly up against the edges ofthe opening b,

the said opening b will be entirely filled up,

and the entire surface of the top of the table Will be level and unbroken, and adaptable to any ordinary uses.

I am aware that a recording desk or table has been heretofore made with vertically-adjustable leaves arranged in an opening cut in the top and at the front edge, and arranged at right angles to said edge, and operated by screws depen ding beneath the desk, and working in, stationary nuts mounted in the frame of the table. I do not intend to claim herein broadly either a desk having'. verticali y-adj ustable leaves or the devices of screws and fixed nuts for adjusting them. I intend to limit my claim to the specific invention herein shown and particularly described, Whereby,-in a desk having vertically-adjustable leaves arranged parallel to the edge of the table in an opening cut in the topthereof, the said leaves are adjustable-laterally in ,an independent sliding frame, and Whereby,' when the table is not used vfor recording, itV may be readily and quickly adaptedto ordinary= uses.

What I laim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a recording-table, the frame C, carrying the vertically-adjustable leaves AlA, ar` ranged parallel t0 the edge B in the opening b in the table top, by means of the metal channeled blocks e, the metalguide-braees d, the transverse brace d supporting the nuts n, in which Work the screws s, the said frame C being arranged to move on the slides D set in the table-frame, whereby the said leaves A Al arevlaterally adjustable on the edge B of the table, as and for the purpose specitied.

2. In a recording-table, the adjustable leaves AY A', having the outwardly-beveled ends m arranged to fit against the reversely-beveled edges m of' the opening b, together with the strip a, having the outwardly-beveled ends n', and adapted to ll the space b between the said leaves A A', whereby, when Athetable is.'
