The upper rails of the second and third sash units 2 are equipped with small outwardly extending flanges 16 and are identical with the upper rail15 of the lowermost sash unit so that all of said outwardly extending flanges 16 are disposed in the path of movement of the adjacent inwardly extending flanges 18 on the lower rails ofthe sash units.
p A variation however, exists as to the upper rail ofthe top sash unit 2, inasmuch as a cap` Y 2OA is fixed on said rail which provides slight outward .extension 21 to engage on top lof abead'or flange .22 at they bottom of the chamber or pocket 10. The size ofthe cap -20 is such las to completely close off the said chamber or pocket 10 when the Vsash units 2 are in a lowered position as shown in Figures 3 and 4', in` order to provide a finishto the window construction. But saidcap 20 is raised up into the top of the chamber or thatthe size, style, and type of the window ordoo'r will determine the-character of the construction of the raising or operating mechanism, and that therefore the raising or operating mechanism would of course be changed or varied to meet the conditions as they are found to exist.
It will be seen from Figures 3, 4 and 5 that .we may employ a removable section 4 in one offtlie'sides4 of the groove 3. l/Vhen this section 4 which is also provided with grooves and beads 5 and 6, the sash units 2 may be quickly inserted in or removed from the frame. Screws 3', as shown in Figure 4 retain the removable section 4 in operative Y position shown in said gure. Y
- Simply for thev purpose of illustrating a raising or operating mechanism, but not for the purpose of limiting the invention to such Y Y construction, we have shown in the drawings an embodiment which consists of a pair of sprocket'wheels 21 at the top and bottom Vof :the structure Vover which run chains 22 having their ends securedto the corners ofthe flowermosty sash lsection 2,'in such manner aste lieLwithin the groove 5 for said sash unit asshownI in dotted lines on the left side of "FigureB," A shaft 22, (Figure 7 may carry one ofthelower sprockets 21, and may also i carry a similar sprocket 23 which may be con- ,fj 'nected by a chain 24 to a similar sprocket on @the opposite side ofy the window structure.
y"Aicrank 24",having a 'slidable handle 25 carrying a slidable pin 26, may be mounted on the crank 24, while an escutcheon plate 27 having therein a hole 28 to receive said slidable pin 26 may be mounted at the bottom of the window structure as shown in Figure 3. By this "construction, the sash units may be raisedzor lowered and also locked in a raised, lowered or intermediate position, by the slidable pin 26 entering the hole 28v in the plate27. c
Any other suitable operative or locking devicev may,l be employed without `departing from the'spirit of our invention.
Having thus described the several parts of the invention, it is believed that the operation of the-same will be obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings taken in connection with the foregoing specification.
' However, it may be said that upon upward movement of the lowermost sash unit 2 the flange 14 on its lowerrail 13 engages the inwardly extending iiange 18 on the lower rail 17 of the second sash unit 2, and ,raises said second sash. As the upward movement is continued, the outwardly extending flange 19 on the lower rail 17 of the second sash unit, engages the inwardly extending flange 18 on the lower rail 17 of the third sash unit and raises said third sash unit. Asthis upward movement progresses, the `outwardly extending flange 19 onthe lower rail 17 of the third sash unit engages the inwardly extending flange 18 on the lower-rail-17y of the fourth or uppermost sash unit, and raises said fourth sash unit so that all of the sash units are finally raised and housed inthe chamber or pocket-10, as shown in Figure 5.
At any point during this upward progress of the sashunits', the slidable pin 26 may be dropped into the hole 28 in the plate 27 and the window sash units locked in any intermediate or partially raised position, or in fully raised position, as shown in Figure 5. To lower the sash units, the outwardly projecting flanges 16 .on the top rails 15 of the sash units successively engage the inwardly projecting flanges 18 on the lower rails 17 of the sash sections to close the window asA shown in Figure 4. These outwardly extending flanges 16 on the top rails 15 of the sash units alsoH .prevent independent upward movement of the second, third-and fourth sashunits and thus retain these vsash units against opening or'vmovementyfrom the outside,when the lowermost sash unit is locked in its lowered position as shown in Figure4. Having thus described the invention, it will be seen that the obj ects of the invention are accomplishedgby a simple and an inexpensive construction. And while we have shown only a single embodiment ofthe same, we are fully aware that various changes and alterations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we' considerv ourselves clearly entitled to, all
such changes and modifications, as fall Within the limit and scope of the appended claim. Y
What we claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent of the United States is: I A device of-thecharacterdescribed including ya frame having sides provided with grooves and beads, a plurality of units slidn able in said grooves, each unit including an upperv rail and a lower railthe lowermost l0 rail of each unit being provided with-an out- I wardly extending lange, and the lowermost rail of certain of thevunitsbeing provided with an inwardly extending flange ldisposed in the paths of upward movement of the out- 15 wardly extending flanges :of thel adjacent units, the upper Yrail of certain of the units being provided with an outwardly extending flange arranged above the said inwardly extending flange on the lower Vrail of its'adja- 2G cent unit and in the path of downward move-v Y ment thereof, the device being provided kat its top with a pocket to receive and houseall of Vthe units, a cap mounted on and movable with the upper rail of the top unit to completely close off the said pocket when thesaid top unit is in normal lowered position, a side y' of the frame including a removable section A for the application and removal of thennits, y and means for manually operating the units v 3g to raise and lower the same and including l means for locking the units in any position.
