No.175,114. Patenta& March 21, 1876.

- lMROVE-MNTIN MlDULINGS-PURIFIERS.
Specification-forrning part of Letters Patent No. 175.114, dated March 21, 1876; application filed V January 22, 1876.
To 'all whom it' may com-em: 4
Be it known' thatwe, EDWIN N. LAPHAM and J OSEPH LAPHAM, of Peru, in the connty of v Ulinton and Stateof New York, have invented new and Improved Middlings-Purifier, of which the followi g is aspecification:
The invention consists of a hollow trunk or chest standignearly upright, havin g clusters 'ut' stationa'y beate'rs standing acrossit, and valves in the lower side at certain distances `part, and turning into a horizontal direction ,in the upper part, ins which are' other beaters,
with a hopper below for returns, into the lower 'part of which trunk the niddlings are' fed above a fan, whicljblows the middlings up past the b'eaters, Whith disitegratethe lumps and break oli' the heavie'r from the lighter pari ticles, so that the latter are earried ofi: through the bra -sp01 t,'3 while the, forne'' 'escape through the valvesand are'condncted away', and the returns are conducted from the hopper back into the nachineagain'for beingworked over. i
Figurelis a sectional'eleration of our improved pnrifier, and Fig. 2 is a front elevati'on. Similar letters of reference indicate oorre sponding parts. y i v.
A represents the i hollow trunk, 'which stands early up'ight, and has thin,flat, or other shaped stationary beaters, B, extendin g across fron thelower side to: the 'upper one,
' and preferably located in groups or clusters at certain intervalsof 'space along the? upright portion of the trunk, and the back-or lower side has a number of ipassages, C, for the escape of the niddl-ings into a spout, D, for conducting them away, the passages being regulated by valves M. The trnnk bends over at E into a horizontal portion, in which are other 'stationary beaters, B', and below them `is a hopper, F, for returns. The middlingsare fed into the truk at G from a hopper, H, by a roller, I, and regulated in quantity by'a slide, K. From the inlet Gr they are blown p along the trunk against the beaters by the fan J the light particles being separated and carried ofi' to the hran-bin through E, whilethe heavier portions fall through the valvcs, and the returns go back into hopper H rby the spout L, to be worked over again. The lower valve M islonger than the others. and is adjusted so as to concentrate the blast on the feed-roller, thereby subjecting the middling's to a strng blast at the time of entering, and before they canfall into the passages C. v
Having thus described our nvention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of hollow inclined trunk A, stationary beaters 'B, passages C, valves M, and fan J, substantially ass'pecified.
2. The horizontal portion E` of the trunk, stationary beaters B', hoppers F, and spout L, combined with the inelined `trunk A and fan J, substatially as specified;
EDWIN n. LAPHAM. J OSEPH LAPHAM.
