This invention relates to apparatus for forming annular beads in stovepipe casing, such as used in an oil-well.
Stovepipe casing as manufactured at present comprises inner and outer layers of sheet metal which are rolled into cylindrical form and are secured axially together either by riveting or by forming inter-engaging corrugat-ions in the inner and outer layers after they have been placedtogether.
The forming of corrugations in stovepipe casing has been found themost practical, for While riveting produces a casing that has ample compressive strength, the linear tensile strength of such riveted casing is inadequate to stand the strain of supporting five hundred to several thousand feet of casing, which is necessary in the installation of casing in a well.
Ordinarily, the annular corrugations or beads are formed in stovepipe casings by a hammer having a. recess formed thereon, and a die having a bead formed thereon. These members constitute part of a' hammering mechanism, the hammer of which` is reciprocated while the stovepipe casing is rotated until an annular bead is completed.
yThe disadvantage of using hammering apparatus is that it takes too much time to form a corrugation and the corrugation is not as satisfactory as it might be.
It is an object of my invention to provide apparatus for rolling an annular bead in stovepipe casing.
It is a further object of my invention to provide an apparatus having rotating members provided with mating concave and conveX surfaces for forming annular corrugations in well casing.
It is a still further object of my invention to provide apparatus of the character described in which pressure is transmitted to bead forming rollers during the rolling operation.
It is another object of my invention to provide means for increasing and decreasing the space between related rolling members. It is a still further object of my invention to provide an apparatus of the character described, providing means for driving and means for synchronizing the bead forming l rollers of the invention.
Other objects of my invention will be apparent from a perusal of the following speciiication, the accompanying drawings andthe appended claims.

In the drawings I show a main supporting frame 11, comprisinga base 12 and an upper supporting arm 13. The base 12 provides a bore 14 retaining one end of a mandrel 15, the yother end of which protrudes from the base 12 at right angles thereto, directlybelow and parallel with the arm 13. The mandrel 15 is provided with a longitudinal boreV 16 through which a shaft 17 extends. The
shaft 17 is supported at its inner end by a.V
bushing 19 pressed into the bore 16. The shaft 17 extends through the bushing a suf-` ficient distance to accommodate a gear 2O and one of a pair of reduction gears 21, both of which are keyed to the shaft 17. The gear 21 meshes with a pinion 22, which is keyed to a stub shaft 23. The shaft 23 is supported by the frame 11 as shown in Figs. 2 and3. Mounted on the end of the stub shaft23 isa tight and loose pulley arrangement driven from a source of power, not shown.
I will now refer to the more pertinent details of my invention. Y
The outer end 24 of the shaft 17 is support-` ed by a pair of ball bearings 25, which are pressed within a recess 26 in the outer .end 27 of the mandrel 15. The bearings 25 are spaced apart by a spacing sleeve 28 to'proanvoil chamber 29. The valve 106 is then operated tocause air pressure from the supply line 109 to flow into the cylinder 88 atthe right side of the piston 87 through the line 108, and to exhaust the air contained in the cylinder 88 at the left of the piston 87 through the line 107 andthe exhaust line 110.
As the piston 87 moves in the direction of the arrow 112, Fig. 4, motion is imparted through the pistonrod 83 and the bell cranks 78, causing the link 73 to force the head 54 downward. The downward movement of the head 54 causes the secondary rolling member 67 carried thereby to exert considerable pressure on the outer surface of the tubular member 111, in the direction of the arrow 113 of Fig. 6.
rlhe downward movement of the head 54 in the recess 59 of the supporting arm 13 causes a pivotal movement of the shaft 47, pivoting in the bearing 52.
This slight pivotal movement of the shaft 47 and the secondary rolling member 67 within the recess 59 is provided for by the loose fit between the shaft 47 and the openings 64 and 65. The rolling member 67 is also loosely housed within the recess 59 of the head 54 to provide for the slight relative movement occurring between the head 54 and rolling member 67.
Rotary motion is then imparted to the primary and secondary rolling members 40 and 67 through their respective shafts 17 and 47, gears 20 and 49, the gears 21 and 22, and the tight and loose pulley.
Frictional contact between the primary and secondary rollers 40 and 67 and the tubular member 111, causes the tubular member to rotate. Suiiicient pressure is applied to the secondary rolling member 67, to cause the walls of the tubular member 111 to be pressed into conformation with the bead 41 and the groove 71 of the primary and secondary rolling members 40 and 67 to produce an annular bead in the wall of the tubular member 111, as shown at 114in Fig. 7.
After the annular bead 114 is formed in the tubular member 111, the valve 106 is again operated to raise the secondary rolling member 67 by causing the line 108 to exhaust through the line 110 and the line 107 tobe connected to the air supply line 109 to return the piston 87 in the direction of the arrow 115, Fig. 4. l
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that my invention will expeditiously roll beads in a tubular member, the actual process being about four times faster than the hammei-ing method referred to previously.
Although I have herein disclosed only one complete embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that various features might be changed and numerous embodiments thereof might be devised by those skilled in the art, without 'departingfrom the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device for rolling corrugations in a tubular member, the combination of a primary forming element; a secondary forming element; meansfor synchronously operating said elements; a supporting body; walls forming a recess in said body; a plate covering said recess and secured to said body; a head operating in said recess; walls forming a notch in said head; a cover closing one si de of said notch 'and secured to said head, said operating means extending through openings in said head and said cover, said secondary forming element secured to said operating means and operable therewith within said notch; retaining members securing said element to said operating means; a pivot bearing, said operating means supported in said pivot bearing; a gear train, said gear train synchronously operating said primary and secondary forming elements; and mechanism for moving said head and moving said element associated therewith toward or away from the other of said elements. In a device for rolling corrugations in a tubular member, the combination of a primary forming element; a secondary forming element; means for synchronously operating said elements; a mandrel; walls forming a bore in said mandrel; operating means extending through said bore; journaling members within said bore supporting saidoperating means; a thimble and a retaining disk fastened to said primary forming-element, said primary forming element secured to said operating means and operable therewith; locking means for retaining said primary forming element and parts associated therewith to said operating means; a head for supporting said secondaryy formingv element and mechanism for moving said head and moving said element associated therewith toward or away from the other of said elements, said mechanism inclu-ding a cylinder, a piston operable in said cylinder, means for admitting compressed fluid into either end of said cylinder fori-moving said piston` and parts connecting said head and said piston.
