This invention relates to a cast-metal car ends of the flanges 4 and 5 merge integrally body, and an object is to provide a car body at the corners of the car. comprising a unitary casting including a, The frame 1 is strengthened by a pair of floor and side walls made of cast steel and its spaced longitudinal depending flanges 6 5 equivalent so as to dispense with the neceswhich are spaced equally from the sides of 55 sity of using rivets or bolts or other fasteners the car and the side edges of the car are while at the same time theweight is not strengthened by a pair of longitudinal desubstantially increased but greater strength pending flanges 7 extending from end to end and durability is obtained. of the car floor 1. The ends of the car are Another object of the invention is to prostrengthened by transverse depending 60 vide a car body of the type and embodying flanges 8, the ends of which merge integrally the construction mentioned and including with the ends of the flanges 7. The by a series of transverse depending flanges 16 having their ends integral with the walls 2 and extending the full width of the car floor and intersecting the flanges 6, as clear ly shown in Fig. 2. The bosses 13 are integrally connected with the walls 2 by spaced flanges 17 extending from integral connection with the corners of said bosses to integral connection with the flanges 7. The corner portions of the car floor are strengthened by integral flanges 18 extending from integral connection with the corners of the bosses 13 to integral connection with tle corners of the car floor.
The corners of the car body thus constructed are formed with integral bumper elements 19 to receive the shocks of colliding cars.
From the foregoing it is apparent that my improved car body is a unitary casting in the form of a box-like structure of not much greater weight, if any, than the usual cars having wood floors or wood side walls. The car body is much stronger and much more durable than cars made of assembled pieces and parts and may be manufactured with greater economy. Thus, many desirable results are obtained.
