No. 220,485.
invention relates toz marking machines j I and name particularly to; devices ofthischar- .acter for marking laundryor' the like by striking' type against the "articles tobe marked while the latter are, held against a suitable, platen, the object of the invention, being'to.
provide a suitable type carrier, and means for actuating thecarrier-to impart a sharp, hammer-li=ke blOW Of the: type i t the article to. be marked.
In accomplishing this object I have pro. videdimproved details of structure, the preferred forms'of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig 1 is a side elevationof a laundry markingmachine embodying my lmprovements, part of which is broken away to show the type storage.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the ma.
chine frame, showing the operating lever and. apart of the type arm andits operating mechanism. I I 1 Fig. 3 is a transverse sectionon the line sees, Fig. -1 H Fig. t'is, a longitudinal section through the operating parts on the line 44, Fig 3, showing also suggested means of association of the type carrier with f other mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a. perspective view'of the operating lever and crank arm,.and arack bar reciprocated thereby.
,Referring in detail to the; drawings:
1 designates a casing or frame including 7 a top plate 2 and an outer side wall 3, shown asfprovided with transparent panels. 4. A
shaft 5 isfixedin bearing blocks 6 and 7 ex tending upwardly from the top plate adja-v cent the "wall 3, and a bifurcated type car; riage or type arm 8 is pivotally mounted on theshaft 5. The type carriage comprises a type holding head 9. for holding 'thetype form '9 and spaced legs 10 and 11, the ends of the legs being pivotally mounted on said shaft,
. each exteriorly to one of the bearing blocks.
Means for actuating the type arm include preferably a pinion 12, which may be a gear segment, fixed on the endof-the leg 10 of the type carriage adjacent the frame member 3; and a reciprocable arm-engaging member shown as a vertical rack bar 13 extending through a suitable opening in; the top. platewith its teeth in engagement with the pinion. A roller 14, supported by a bracket 15secured; tothe top plate, is positioned to; be movable: in a groove 16 in the backof the rack, bar as.
preferred means for holding the bar against.
nected with the lower end of the rack bar by a pin 23, the arm extending substantially parallel to the lever but being positioned on the opposite side of the wall 3 therefrom.
Vertical movement of the lever is designed to cause rotation of the arm 22 to reciprocate the rack bar, which in turn operates the pinion to swing the type carriage. The type carriage is'retracted by a spring 24 having one,
end looped over the leg 11 and itsother end fixed in the frame by the screw'25.
Suitable members are provided to support,
articles to receive the impression of the type, such as a boss 26 positioned on the frame in the path of the rotatable type beam carriage,
having a platen'27 on which stock oran ar-I ticle to be stamped may be positioned, and a.
holding device including a frame 28 fixedto the top plate, a clip finger 29 hinged thereto and a spring member 30 impelling the finger against the frame plate.
Means for latching the reciprocating rack bar against normal downward movement and so preventing the actuation of the type beam is illustrated as a pawl 31, having a shoulder- 32 and lip 33 on. its upper end, which is pivotally mounted on a pin 34 supported by'the frame, the pawl being impelled by a spring 35. into engagement with the rack bar, the: lower end of which may seat upon said shoulder, the lip 33 restraining the pawl in eneas men with) the. rack The pawl may be diSPlZLQQCl by mannalrl means to permit the lever to actuate the rack bar and type carriage. I
I illustrate a means of associating the stamping mechanism of this invention with other elements of a marking machine, including an ear 36 on the lower end of the pawl, a cam plate 37, which may be moved in connection with the operation of mechanism not shown, the cam having an outwardly proj ecting pin 38 which may be assumed to contact the'ear of the pawl to pivotally move the pawl from latching engagement with the rack bar, the pawl being returned by the spring to engagement with the rack bar upon elevation of the rack bar and suitable movement of the cam.
Said associated mechanism forms no part of the present application and invention and the means of actuating the said associated elements has no part in the actuation of my mechanism, being shown merely as possible means for preventing actuation of the stamp ing mechanism except at periods consonant with the operation of such associated elements.
Assuming the parts to be constructed and assembled as described, the carriage provided with type from the type storage designated 39 to provide the type form 9 for printing initials or a name on thearticles to be marked, and an article to be marked applied to the platen, the pawl 31 is released from its latching engagement. with the rack bar, either manually or automatically, and the lever 17 manually depressed to rotate the shaft 18 and oscillate the crank arm 22 to depress the rack bar 13. The rack bar, engaged with the .pinion 12, rotates the same and therewith swings the type carriage in an arc to contact the article positioned on the platen, the lever 17 and the arm 22 providing a substantial rapid motion to the type beam whereby the beam is caused to deliver a swift and sharp hammer-like blow. The type beam is preferably returned to normal position by' the spring 23,- the pawl 31 being retracted to latching engagement with the rack bar by the spring 35.
Attention is called to the provisions of the roller '14 frictionally engaging-the rack bar in the groove 16, whereby the reciprocating rack bar actuated by a circularly rotating arm, namely crank arm 22, is retained in engagement. with the pinion while tilting from I tween the pinion and the roller at any moment lying in a line joining the axes ofthe pinion and the roller. 7 I
I What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
2. In a marking machine, a platen, a pivoted type carrier, a type form in the carrier, means for actuating the type carrier to bring the type form into contact with the platen comprising a gear on the type carrier, a rack bar meshing withthe gear, an actuating shaft, I
an arm fixed to the actuating shaft and pivotally connected-with the rack bar, an actuating lever for the shaft, and a detent for latch-.-
'ing the rack bar. 7
3. In a marking machine includ ng a mov able cam responsive to operation of the ma-' chine, a platen, a pivoted type carrier, atype form in the carrier, means for actuating the type carrier to bring the type form into contact with the platen comprlsing a gear on the pivoted adjacent the rack bar, means yield- V ingly retaining the detent in engagement with the rack bar, and means includingsaid permlt move-.
cam for releasing the detent to ment of the rack bar.
4. In a marking machine including operable members, a platen, a pivoted type carrier, a type form: in. the carrier, and means for actuating the type carrier to bring the type form into contact with the platen, a detent for latchingthe actuating means and means responsive to movement of said operable members for releasing the-detent'to permit movement of thetype carrier. 7
5. In a machine of'the character described including a plate adaptable for periodic movement in the operation of themachine,
a platen, a type carrier, and means includ- 1' ation of the carrier moving means. 1 .1 In testimony whereof I affix my slgnature;
