e on NEW Yonx, N. i, A CORPORATION on NEW YORK SHIPPIITG AND DISPLAY CARTON Application filed April 25,
i- 'lihisinvention relates to cartons and cardboard blankstherefor and more particularly 'to'carton sfifor carrying fragile articles and rotectingthem against breakage, though it is noted; that'the'invention is not limited to cardboard cartons nor in some respects even to-cartons for fragile articles.
One object. of the invention 1s to provide i a container of this kind having therein a partition provided with nests or seats for holding articles out of contact with the container.
Another object of the, invention is to rovide a device ofthis kind in which the artlcles may be easily displayed while nested.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved closing means for cartons of this kind or for other types of containers.
. f Another object is to provide an improved one-piece blank for making the carton. Y 20.
Other objects of the invention are to improve. generally the simplicity and efiicienc'y of suchcartons and to provide a carton of this kind which is durable, and'sightly in use, easy to set up, and'economical to manufacture.
- Still other objects of the invention will apearzas the description proceeds; and while erein idetailsof t e invention are described "and; claimed, the invention is not limited to these, since many and various changes may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention. as claimed in the broader claims.
.. meiitjofithefsei and other objects are shown.
' herein inlconnection with an improved carton which, brieflystated, includes a bottom to 'vvhieh :are@folds'ibly joined a front walland a h nv'entive features for the accomplish- 1 Walls} joining the rear wall.
rear wall, .end 7 as of less height than the rear The front we wall, and "afpaitition. extending from and joining the upper-edge of the'front wall to the rear wall providing upper and lower chambers to the carton is provided with nests for receiving andholding electric bulbs or other artioles outof contact with other parts of the carton.
A cover for said outer chamber comprlses a l lid top foldably joined to the upper part of I the rear wall and provided at its free edge with a closing piece to close the front of the outer chamber.
1928. serial No. 272,724.
In the accompanying drawing showing, by way of example, one of many possible embod ments of the invention,
Flg. 1 is a perspective view of the container closed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container in open condition;
Flg. 3 1s a transverse vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, showing the article nested in the carton, the section being taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the d1rection of the arrows of said line;
F g. 4 1s a fragmental longitudinal vertical sectlonal view, partly in elevation, showing an lnner face view of.the closing piece, the sect1on being taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows of said line; and
Fig. 5 is a face view of the blank.
My improved carton is formed of a onepiece blank 5 (Fig. 5) cut and folded to form a bottom 6 (Figs. 3 and 4) having upturned end flaps 7.
A rear wall 8 is foldably joined to the rear edge of the bottom and is provided with end walls 9 forwardly disposed against the flaps 7, rounded at the upper front corners 10 and foldably joined to the ends of the rear wall and provided near and above their lower rear corners with rearwardly upwardly inclined slits 11.
A front wall 15 about half the height of the rear wall is foldably joined to the front edge of the bottom and provided with end flaps 16 foldably joining the ends of the front wall and disposed against the lower part of the outer face of said end walls 9 and provided at the lower rear corners withdownwardly pointed tabs 17 disposed in said slits 11 to IOI with a longitudinal series ofnests 24 formed by a plurality of radial slits 25, the slits of each nest extending from a common center,
and terminating at a common circumference, thereby to form separate friction fingers 26 joining the body of the platform at said circumference and adapted to be forced downwardly (Fig. 3) into the inner chamber, as by the insertion of the neck of an electric light bulb 27 or other suitable article, thereby to cause the fingers to frictionally engage the articlcs and hold the articles in the nests, thereby to hold the articles against contact with any outer or other structure of the carton eX- eept said fingers, thereby to protect the articles against breakage.
A cover for said outer chamber comprises a lid top 29 hingedly joined to the upper edge of the rear wall 8 and a closing piece 30 j oining the free edge of the top. At each end of the top are end pieces 31 disposable onthe outside of the end walls 9 and each provided at its edge 32, which is the front edge when the cover is closed, with an elongated flap 33 each disposed flat against and covering the inner face of the closing piece 30 (Fig. 4) for more than a quarter of its length. Each flap 33 is provided with rectangular cut-out 34 about midway of the edge of the flap which is lowest when the flap is closed.
A retaining piece 35 foldably joining the entire free edge of the closing piece is disposed fiat against the exposed faces of said flaps 33 and provided near the ends with wide tongues 36 passing through the inner end of said cut-outs and disposed between the flaps and the closing piece, thereby to retain the retaining piece and flaps folded adjacent to the inner face of the closing piece 30.
The middle part of the retaining piece 35 is wider than the end parts and cut as at 39 .to form a recess 39 and a tongue 40 (Fig. 2) joined to the free edge of the closing piece 30 and provided at its free end with a pair of appositely pointed locking tabs 41 disposable in said recess 39 when the tabs are not in use, or disposable at the front of the front wall for locking.
The front wall 15 is provided with a pair of spaced locking slits 42 adapted to receive the tabs 41 for holding the cover closed over the upper chamber. The score lines 43 facilitate insertion of the tabs.
Fig. 5. shows the blank 5 provided with score lines 32, 43, 44 on its inner face separating the various structures above described, and from which the container may be easily constructed by persons skilled or not skilled in the artof box making.
The exteriorly exposed faces of parts 6, 8,
9, 15, 20, 29, 30, 31, 33, 35 and 40 all on the same face of the blank making it possible to ornament, by printing one face of the blank only, all of the exterior of the carton when closed and mostof the exposed'parts when 0 en. I
While in this specification" and claims I speak of the bottom, top, ends front and rear of the container and mention that parts are foldably joined, it is understood that I use these words for designation and that they are to be construed broadly enough to cover the container in other relative dimensions or positions than as shown, and where parts are connected by other than score lines, and in general the terms are to be given broad interpretation.
