This invention relates to side frames for the trucksof railwa rolling stock and more particularly to cast ames with journal boxes either integraltherewith -or with the rupper -5 portions thereof formed inte ral therewith.
= `.-.-The`principal objecty of my invention, genconsidered,v1sto provide a cast side frame with integral journal box portions at 1 the ends thereof, said frame being preferably lfOr-med for pivoting the lower sections of said boxes4 thereto at'one side, and holding the other -side in place by a wedging clip, said lower sections referably serving to support iesiliently held) lubricating cellars beneath the associated journals, above said journals being mounted the brasses, wedges, and a ca l adapted for vertical reciprocation in eac box. the integral portion of each box being preferably extended upwardly above said cap l to rovide space for resilient or spring means.-
nother object of my invention is to proyvidea side frame and journal box construction in which the top half of the box is integral with the frame and the bottom half is pivoted at one side and held in wedging engagement with thetop `half at the other side.
A further object of my invention is to provide a journal box construction involving an upwardly elongated'top portion on the box -or receiving supporting `springs like the springs disposed above the journals in a pedestal type of truck. A still further object ofv my invention is to provide a journal box construction adapted to receive a vertically reciprocatin cap fitting over the wedge andbrass in t e box to provide a spring seat for springs disposedI etween sai cap and the top wall of the box.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relating to the. articular arrangement and construction o? the various parts will become apparent. as the description proceeds.

Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being desi ated bylike reference char acters,`there is s own a cast side frame 1 hav-v ing a compression member 2 and a tension -member 3, said members converging toward their ends and uniting with the integral upper portions 4 of/ associated journal boxes. Although only one end of theA frame is illustratad, it willbe understood that the intermediate portions thereof may be of conventional construction involving guide columns or struts not shown) spacing intermediate ortions o the compression and tension memrs leavin a bolster receiving opening there between. he compression member 2 is illustrated as inverted U shape in section with an up er web 5 and fianges 6 depending from 'the e ges thereof. The roof or top wall 10 of the box, in the' embodiment illustrated, is offset above the web 5. The outer wall 11 of the box is extended downwardly from the roof or upper wall 10 and is preferably cylindrical to provide a pocket 12 for receiving the springs diagrammatically indicated at 13 for-resiliently mounting the ends of the frame. Below the spring receiving pocket 13, the outer wall 11 and inner wall 9 are offset away from each other as indicated at 14 and 15 respectively and disposed substantially parallel with respect to one another for providing the journal box onjournal receiving portion 16 of the box. The downwardly extended portions CII 15 of the box are preferably braced withrespect to the tension member web by spaced webs 17 extending between the web 7 and the wall 15. In a similar manner,v the outer wall 14 is preferably rigidified by flanges or webs 18 extending over the roof 10 and down the outer wall 11 to the lower edge of the wall portion 14, said flanges being preferably spaced to correspond with the space between the flanges 6 of the compression member so that they form in effect continuations thereof.
In the present embodiment', the lower section or lubricant holding portion 19 of the Abox is formed separate from the upper porportion 19 of the journal box are preferably `formed with upwardly extending ribs or flanges 28 engaging in corresponding pockets or channels 29 for rendering the connection between the upper and lower sections of the box as nearly fluid tight as practicable. The lugs 21 on the lower section 19 of t-he box are likewise formed with apertures 30 adapted to receive a securing pin `31 preferably headed at one end and provided with a cotter 32 at the other end for holding it in place. Said pin, however, does not extend through corresponding aperturedportions on the upper part of the boxbnt instead serves for holding in place a wedging clip 33 preferably formed with a body portion 34 connecting a lower flange 35 underlying the outer edgeof the lower section 19 of the box and an upper flange 36 with a lower face inclined to correspond with the inclination of the enlarged lower edge portion 37 of the integral journal box portion 4. will be clear that the lower section 19 of the box may be snugly held in place after swinging upwardly about the pivot pin 25 by forcing the wedging clip 33 over the engaging outer edges of the upper and lower portions of the box and inserting the pin 31 in the registering apertures 30 to engage the `body portion 34 of the clip and, hold it securely in position. The lower portion 19 of the box serves for holding the lubricant and is preferably provided with a lubricant cellar 38 -resiliently held byv a plurality of coil springs 39 with the upper ends disposed in pockets 40 in the cellar and their-lower ends fitting in corresponding pockets 41 in the box section 19. Said cellar 38 may hold waste, felt, or other lubricating means against the associated journal 42. v t
Disposed on the journal 42, as 1s' usual,
is the associated bearing member or brass 43 and disposed thereabove may be the usual wedge 44. Fitting over the wedge and brass is acap 45, the sides of which are guided for vertical movement between the shoulders 46 on the box portion 4. The upper surface or wall 47 of the cap 45 is preferably flat to provide a seat for the lower ends of the springs or resilient means 13. The journal box portion 4 may as usual be provided with an outer opening 48 normally closed by a -journal box lid (not shown) of desired con- `the roof of the boxand a spring cap which may be shaped on its inner surface to correspond with a conventional journal box and be provided with brass lugs 51 so that a conventional brass and wedge may be used therewith if desired. The lower section of the box is desirably held rigidly against the upper section by a wedging clip held in place by an associated pin and serves, if desired, for resiliently supporting a cellar adapted to hold lubricating means against the bottom of the associated journal. Although a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that modifications may be mile therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
' 1. A truck side frame with journal boxes at the ends thereof, said boxes being formed with detachable lower sections and wedging clip holding said lower sections in place.
2. A truck side frame with integrally i i in tight non-resilient engagement therewith,
.a lubricating cellar resiliently supported on said lower-sections below an associated journal, a brass, wedge and cap supported above said journal, the box being extended above said cap to provide room for receiving resilient supporting means.
4. A truck side frame with an integral journal box at each end thereof, said box comprising a portionreceiving the journal and associated bearing members and an extension thereabove for receiving spring means.
5. A truck side frame comprising compression and tension members uniting at their ends, a journal box formed integral with the i frame at eachend thereof, said journal box being vertically elongated to provide a relatively large spring receiving pocket above the associated journal, the walls of said pocket being rigidied by webs extending over the top and down the outside walls of said boxes as continuations of the compression member. v
6. A truck side frame with the upper ortion of a journal box integrally forme at each end thereof, a detachable lower section for said box mounted therebeneath, a lubricating cellar supported by means of said lower section below an associated journal, said box bei-ng extended above said journal, spring means mounted in said extension and a cap supported above said journal and providing a seat for said spring means.
7. A truck side frame with a journal box integrally formed at each end thereof, a journal received in said box, bearing means resting on said journal, a spring cap supported on said bearing means and frame supporting springs disposed between said cap and the top of said box.
8. A truck side frame comprising compression and tension members uniting at their ends, a journal box formed integral with the frame at each end thereof, the walls of said box being rigidified by webs extending over the top and down the outside thereof as continuations of the compression member.
9. A truck side frame comprising compression and tension members uniting at their ends, said compression member comprising A' a Web and ianges on the edges thereof, a journal box formed integral with the frame at each end thereof, each journal box being vertically elongated to provide a spring receiving pocket above the associated journal, the top and outer walls of said boxes being rigidifiedbyjoutstanding flanges extending there along and aligned with the flanges of the compression member as continuations thereof.
