SURFAC ING MACHI NE Filed Sept. 4l 1928 ATTORN EY e Patented Feb. 1s, 1930 j PATENT OFFICE CHARLES II. LYNE, or MIAMI, FLORIDA f s'UnrAcING MACHINE Appiie'atien med september' 4, 192s. serial No. 303,904.
vMy invention relatesto metal' surfacing machines, and more particularly to a portable manhole casing interior'surfacing or finishi ing machine. l Anobject of the invention' Vis to provide a machine of this character having a revoluble surfacing element which is advanced longi-y tudinally overthe work so that'the entire surface being -operated on will be evenly l@ surfaces. Y
The invention further provides a portable machinel which is rotatably supported on the j work and incident toits rotation about the same automatically feeds a cutting or sur- .p facing element step by step.
l/Vith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists vin the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts to be gohereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying draw-k ings, wherein j l Figurel is a top plan view of the invention in operative'position on a manhole casing and having parts broken away,

section takeny on cular trackway 5 toy be received on the upper edgel of a manhole casing 6 and retained thereon yby radially disposed set screws is provided. A n
* Removably andv rotatably mounted on the trackway 5 is a ,metallicV casting 10 having a plurality of radially disposed arms 11 which extend close to the inner edge of the trackv way. Each of the arms is formed with an 4o 'upstanding extension 12 at its outer end, pro- "vided' with angularly disposed transverse openings 13 through which angularly disposed handles 111 pass, for the purpose of rotating the casting. A horizontal shaft 15 passes transversely'through eachof kthe ex- Jtensions"adjacent its lower end and carries a `flangedl roller 16 which isv received on the For the purposegof clamping the casting Referring tothe invention in detail, a circlamping bar 17 of a length to be snugly ree ceived within the manhole casing and having upstanding lugs 18 at its ends to contact with the. under face of the usual annular seat in the manhole casing is provided. Set screws 19 pass through these lugs for binding engagement with the interior of the manhole casing. A vertical shaft 2O rises from the upper face of the clamping bar centrally of the ends of the latter and passes through a hub 21 formed at the center of the casting. Anti-friction elements 22 are arranged in the hub to eliminate friction. The upper end of the shaft projects beyond the hub and retaining nuts 24 to hold the casting and clamping bar in assembled relation.
The under face of one of the arms 11 is formed with a longitudinally extending rectangular sleeve 25 in which a longitudinally movable rectangular body 26 is slidably mounted, the latter at its outerend having an angularly disposed transverse opening 27 through which a surfacing element or blade 28 passes. The blade 28 is maintained in proper adjustment to the upper face of the manhole casing seat by a set screw 29 passing transversely through one end of the body 26. The body 26 is limited in its longitudinal movement by a stop 30 projecting from the upper wall of the sleeve 25 and into a longitudinal recess 31 in the upper face of the body. By reason of the endwalls of the recess 31 contacting with the stop 30 the body 26 is limited in its longitudinal movement.
In order to advance the body 26 step by Step over the work so as to Contact with a new area each revolution of the casting, a vertically disposed star wheel 32 is mounted on the arm 11 equipped with the' sleeve 25 and projects through a transverse opening 33 in such arm, rearwardly of the sleeve. The
star wheelv is provided with a lateral trunnion 34 at one side whichis supported in a lateral bearing 35 formed on the hub in opposed relation to the sleeve 25. An internally threaded Isleeve 36 projects from the opposite face of the starfwheel and into the sleeve 25 where it threadedly engages a horizontally disposed threaded stem 37 rigid with Yio the inner end of the body 26. Retained on the shaft 2O beloW the casting by a set screw 38 engaged With the shaft 2O is a collar'BQ vprovided With a laterally projecting pin 40 lying in the Vpath of the :star Wheel.
In practice, the casting` is rotated on the circular trackWay by successively pushingV thehandles 14 from the operator. Astlie casting'is rotated the blade 28 describing a circle, removes the burr or roughness from the Work in its path. By reason of the lateral lingers or segments of 4the star Wheel successively engaging the pin 40, the threaded stem 37 Will be moved outwardly step by step to dispose the blade on a neW surface of the Work.A Due to the fact that the blade successively contacts With a neW area'of the Work the entire surface beinO o eratedu on eral ledge formed on ,a circular body, a circular trackWay to be removablyk positioned on the circular body, a casting Within the confines of the trackWay, rollers carried thereby and movable over the'trackvvay; and a longitudinally movable surfacing element carried by the casting and movable over tthe ledge.y
3. A machine yfor surfacing an internal lat* eral ledge formed on a circular body, a circular trackWay to be removably'positionedl on the circular' body, a casting Within the confines ofthe trackWay, rollers carried thereby and movable over the trackWay, a longitudinally movable surfacing element carried byv the casting and movable over the ledge, and
automatic means Eformoving the surfacing element transversely over the ledge.
4. Ingay machine for surfacing the internal I lateral ledge provided on circular bodies,a
castingrevolubly mountedabove the Work,
a longitudinally movable surfacing element carried thereby, and contacting with the ledge surface,v a threaded stem projecting from the surfacingelement, a vertically disposed star Wheel supported on the casting to one side of .the surfacing icl-ement and rhaving an internally threaded sleeve engaging Ythe threaded i stem, and a xed pin mounted in the path of the starfWheel yandfengageable by the latter each revolution ofthe castingtoadvance the surfacingelement step by step over the ledge.
5. VPi machine for surfacing thev internal annular'ledgesformed-on: ciroularbodies such hole casing, a Vshaft projecting verticallyv therefrom, a casting revoluble on the shaft, a plurality of radially disposed handles .associated With the casing for rotating the'latter, and a surfacing blade carried by the casting and movable over the ledge.
6. In a surfacing machine, a circulartrack to be-supported on thelWork, a member -to be anchored to the Work belovv the track, a vertical shaftrrising from the member, a cast-` ing -rotatable--onf-the track and shaft, andy a surfacing element extending laterally from the casting;
r.V In asurfacing machine, a circular track n. to be supported on the Work, a member to be anchored to the Work beloWjthe track, a vertical shaft rising from the member, acasting rotatable on the trackv and sha-ft, asurfacing element extending laterally from thecasting, and means for'successively, advancing the surfacing element step by step Vover ,the Work.
8. ln a surfacing machine, a circular track to be positioned on the Work,=acasting` having v a plurality of horizontally disposed radially extending arms, an upstanding extension formed With-each arm, rollers revolubly sup- Iported by the extension and movable'over the track, and a surfacing elementfextending laterally fromone of the arms. 1
9. In a surfacing machine,a circulartrack` to be positcned onthe Work, a casting having a plurality of vhorizontally disposed radially extending arms, an upstanding extension formed Withcach arm,.rollers revolublyV sup-1y ported b-y the extensions andV movable over the track, a surfacing element extendingy laterally from one of the arms, and handles removablyassociated With the extensions. i
10. In a surfacing machine, a circulartrack to be positionedonfthe Work, a casting havingy aplurality of horizontallyV disposed radially extending arms, an upstanding extension' formed Withv each arm, rollers revolubly supported by the extensions and movable` over the track, a surfacing element. extending laterally from one of the arms, eachof the extensions having an angularly disposed transverse opening, and an angularly. disposed grasping rodA passing throi'igh each opening With its loWer endresting on one ofthe arms.
