The present invention relates to surfacefinishers for work turning in a lathe; and its object is, generally, to provide mechanism of that character improved as hereinafter appears; and more particularly, to provide such a mechanism having separately movable and controllable operating parts; and further, to provide improved mounting means for the work-engaging elements.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a lathe to which my surface-finisher is applied;
Figure 2 is a right-hand end view thereof;
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the same;
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof taken on line H of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of means for mounting the work-engaging elements, taken on line 55 of Figure 3.
In the structure illustrated by these drawings, my surface-finisher is shown applied to the bed 1 of a lathe having the live head stock 2 and dead head stock 3 on which rotates the work piece 4 being turned. A lever comprising a parallel pair of members 5, 5, is fulcrumed at 6, 6 in connection with the lathes bed, and has the part or handle 7 (connecting said members) for operating said lever. An arm comprising a parallelpair of members 8, 8 is mounted at 9, 9 swlngably on said lever 5 and carries at its free inner end the mounting for the finishing element, which mounting comprises a pair of bars 10, 11, preferably of metal, extending parallelly with the rotary axis of the work piece 4. The lower one, 11, of these bars has an upwardly extending rear flange 12 so positioned relatively to the rear edge or slde of the upper bar 10 that, when these bars are pressed together, they will clamp an abrasive or sanding sheet 20 between these flanges and 5 between the lower surface of the upper bar and upper] surface of the lower bar as particularly well seenin Figure 4. These bars 10, 11 are held in clamping engagement with such sheets between them, as by the springs 14 pressing them together. The metallic lower bar 11 has downwardly extending front and rear flanges 15, 16 and is formed with holes 17. through which pass screws 18 extending between these flanges and threaded in a lowermost wooden bar 19, for clamping between these barsll and 19 resilient fibrous members, as the broom straws '21 which underlie .and yieldingly support the abrasive sheet incontact with the work.
A second lever 22 is fulcrumed at 23 on the lever 5 on an axis'parallel with the fulcrum axis 6 ofthe lever 5. A link 24 is pivotally 'mountedat 25 and 26 on the inner end of lever 22 and the free end of the arm 8 respectively. A foot lever 27 fulcrumed at 28 on the floor beneath the lathe is connected with the outer end of the lever 22 by a link 13 so thatpressure by the foot of the operator onthe pedal end 29 of lever 27 'will swing the abrasive sheet 20 upwardlyand into contact with the turning work piece 1; and the handle? of lever 5 may be grasped by the hand of the operator to move theabrasive sheet forward and backward in a direction transverse to its vertical movement caused by the foot I lever 27. I
It will thus be seen that these two movements of the abrasive element may be carried on and controlled independently of each other, one being accomplished by the operators foot and the other by his hand.
It will also be seen that the bars 10, 11 are so formed as to very securely clamp and hold the abrasive sheet 20 and its resilient support 21.
The joints or pivotal connections 6, 9, 23, 25. 26 or some of them, may be made loose enough, or the parts 5, 8, 22, 24: may have sufiicient spring quality, to permit the bars 10, 11 to be slightly oscillated endwise in the machines operation, in order to obliterate sanding marks on the work.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In combination with a lathe, a surface- 5 finisher for work in the lathe comprising: a lever fulcrumed in connection with the lathes bed on an axis disposed parallelly with the rotary axis of the work; an "arm moun'tedon said lever swingably toward and away from the rotary axis of the Work; a lever fulcrumed on the first-mentioned lever on an axis disposed parallelly with the fulcrum axis of the first-mentioned lever; means connecting one end of the second-mentioned lever with the free end of the arm; a surface-finishing elementcarried by'theiarm and adapted toibe moved .by the second-.rnentioned lever into and out of contact'with the work turning .in the lathe, .and to be moved by the first-mentionedlever 'in atransverse direction.

In combination Jwitha lathe, a surfacefinisher for work in the lathe comprising: a leverfulcrumed in connection with the -lathe?s bed on an axis disposed parallelly with the rotary axisof the work an armrmounted on said :lever swingably toward and away from the rotary axis of the work; a lever fulcrumed on the first-mentioned lever .on an axis disposed parallelly with the fulcrum axis of the s0 first-mentioned lever; means connecting one end of the second-mentioned lever with the freeend ofithe arm; a surface-finishing ele- .ment .ca-rniedby the arm and adapted to be moved .by the second-mentioned lever into 86 and out of contact with the Work turning in the vlathe, andto be moved by the first-mentionedlever in a transverse direction; a lever; a linkiextending between therthird-mentioned lever and the second-mentioned lever for moving the latter by the former.
