In the operation of our various inventions relating to the use of back and forth folded tape with recording instruments, such for example as stock tickers, we have found it desirable to provide an expeditious and. economical method of and apparatus for according suitable folds to paper, so that when out into strips of the desired width it will prober of stacks of folded tapes or strips.
Other features and advantages of our invention will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved I paper indenting machine.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In saiddrawingslet '1 indicate the frame of the machine, in which arejournalled the shafts 2, 3, carrying the rollers 4, 5 in horizontal parallelism, the. opposed surfaces of said rollers being in juxtaposed relation. A roll of paper 6, carried by a shaft 7 which is journalled in bearings 8 that are supported by the frame members 9, supplies the web 10 that is intended to be passed between the rollers 4, 5 for the indenting and folding operation to be performed thereon.
The machine frame is provided with a table 11 which serves to receive the folded paper. said table being supported on horizontal frame members 12, elevated upon legs 13, but the frame members 9, which support paper roll bearings 8, are located in a plane below said members 12.
Mounted in bearings 14 upon members 12 is a roller 15, whose shaft 16 carries a pulley 17, that is connected by a belt-18 with a pulley 19, the shaft 20, for pulley 19 being journalled in the frame and located above the horizontal plane occupied by the rollers, 4, 5.
Resting on the web 19, above roller 15 is a roller 21, which is journalled in links 22 that are pivoted to the frame-uprights 23, whereby said roller imposes its Weight against the web, thereby supplying sufficient tension at this point to steady the draft upon roll 6.
The web 10 leaving roller 15, is allowed to fall into a loop 10, whose upwardly directly portion is carried over a guide bar 24 that is secured, at an elevated position, to the uprights 23, a hinged shoe 25 lightly pressing the web to bar 24, to frictionally steady the web at this point. The drive means for the moving elements of the machine comprise a pulley, 26, here shown as operated by means of a belt 27 that is connected with a motor 28, saidpulley 26' having a stub shaft 29 journalled in bearings 30 carried by a horizontal member 31 of'the frame. A pinion 32 on shaft 29 meshes with a gear 33 on shaft 2, to rotate the latter, and roller 4 and said gear. 33 is in mesh with a gear 35 on shaft 3, whereby said gear 35 with roller 5 is caused to rotate in a direction opposite to that of shaft 2 and roller 4.
The means whereby drive is communicated to belt 18, for feeding web 10 into its gravity loop 10', are as follows:
A pinion 36, whose shaft- 37 is suitably journalled in the frame, is in mesh with gear 35, above the latter, and also meshes with a' pinion 38 carried by shaft 20 forpulley 19, thereby completing the train for the operation of belt 18. Also the shaft- 20 for'pulley 19 carries a steel drum 39, which has adjacent peripheral relation with the felt surface 40 of a roller 41 that is carried by a shaft 4:2; said shaft beiiig suitably journalled in brackets 43. which are pivotally pendantfroma shaft 44 that is journalled in the frame. A frame portion 44 supports the bracket- 43, and is provided with adjust ment. means 45, extending through block 46, for thepur ose of regulating the degree of tension wit which the felt surface 40 exerts frictional contact upon the web 10. b
It will be noted that'the web 10 follows in a vertical line from its point of engagement between the eripheral surfaces of drum 39 and felt sur ace 40 to the point of its entry between the peri heral surface of rollers 4 and 5,.where sai web is to become indented in creating the folds thereof.
For the performance of the indenting operation each of the rollers 4 and is equipped with a socket and a blade in opposite, radial alignment, the arran ement of these elements on the pair of rollers ing such that the blade on each roller will enter the socket in the other roller when in the op site rotation of the rollers the respective b ades and sockets approach their position of registry at opposite sides of web while said web is passing between the rollers.
The blade 47 for each roller is secured in a strip 48 that is fitted in a recess 49 sunk a recess 51 formed within the roller periphery and a pair of jaws therein, the jaw having the reference character 52 being fixed within the recess, and the other jaw 53, being pivotally supported in the recess by a shaft 54 to which an arm 55 is attached,outside the roller end. Said arm 55 has a roller 56 mounted thereon that engages the surface of a cam 56' centered on shafts 2 and 3 respectively, and attached to the frame, for the operation of the movable jaw. A spring 57, having a fixed connection 58 at one end, engages the movable jaw 53 at its other end 59 to tensionall draw said jaw toward the fixed jaw, for we gripping purposes, when the roller 56 is on the low radius of the cam, but when said roller is on the high radius of the cam the jaw 53 thereby is positively spread apart from the fixed 'aw to release the web.
In ig. 3 the upper blade 47 on roller 5 and the upper soc et on roller 4, are shown approaching each other from points equi-distant with relation to the point X at which they will arrive simultaneously, the jaws being spaced apart because their respective rollers 56are still upon the high radius of the cam. At this point X the blade will begin to enter the socket pressing the web therein to form the fold at 60. Then as the rotation of rollers 4, 5 continues the roller 56 enters the low radius of the cam, thereby closing jaw 53 on the entered web portion and allowing spring 57 to press said jaw against the fold to accentuate and grip it.
The intcrengagcment of the blade and socket is complete when these elements are aligned in a plane through the axis of shafts 2, 3, the fold in the web being then pressed fully into the socket to the depth of the blade. From this point onward in the continued rotation of rollers 4, 5 the blade and socket gradually separate, leaving each other at about the point Z, but the web fold remains gripped by the jaws under. the tension of spring 57 until roller 56 rides up upon the high radius of the cam, swinging jaw 53 to its 0 en positionand thereby releasing the web old, which then falls upon the table as shown in Fig. 1, to create a stack of connected leaves. a
The folds are produced in the manner described alternately in the rollers 4, 5, so that the web portions bounded by succeeding folds, fall successively from opposite sides to build up upon the table a stack comprising a series of connected leaves. The blade 47 that presses a fold of web into a socket thereby indents or weakens the web in the line of the blade edge contact, giving the web the effect of its being divided into a succession of hinged leaves, capable of falling individually into stack formation when the web is released alternately from above opposite ends of the stack, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 6, the blade edge may be serrated or provided with saw teeth 61, to deeply indent or perforate the line of blade contact upon the web, to thus enhance the hin e efi'ect referred to.

Variations within the spirit and scope of our invention are equally comprehended by the foregoing disclosure.
We claim:
1. The method of producing a stack of connected leaves of paper from a web thereof which consists in communicating continuous travel motion to said web from its supply source, applying moderate tension to said web to create forward slack therein, guiding the slack web under moderate tension to an elevated position, then allowing the web to ass vertically downward to a given point, indenting said web at said oint, alternately at opposite sides thereof in succession, to create folds therein, permitting said folds to fall into a stack thereof, and finally shearing the stacks into suitable widths for the purpose specified.
2. The herein described machine comprising a frame adapted to support a supply roll of paper web revolubly mounted thereon, a
ivotal guide roller also mounted on said rame, above said supply roll, tcnsional means co-acting with said guide roller permitting the web to fall therefrom in a slack loop, tensional guide means in an elevated position upon the frame for the slack portion of the web, a drum. journalled on the frame to support the web leavin the elevated guide means, a pair of rollers 1ournalled on the frame and having their peripheral sur- 5 faces in opposed relation to receive between them the web leaving said drum, means on said air of rollers to indent the web passing there etween alternately at opposite sides thereof, a table located below said pair of m rollers to receive said web as it falls thereon in a stack of connected leaves, a train of gears to drive said rollers and drum, and means for operating said train. a 3. The herein described machine comprising a frame adapted to support a supply roll of paper web revolubly mounted thereon, a pivotal guide roller, also mounted on said frame, above said supply roll, tensional means co-actmg with said guide roller permitting d the web to fall therefrom in a slack l0op,'tensional guide means in an elevated position upon the frame for the slack portion of the web, a drum journalled on the frame to support the web leaving the elevated guide means, a felt covered roller co-acting withthe drum to frictionally retard theweb over the latter, a pair of rollers journalled on the frame and having their peripheral surfaces in opposed relation to receive between them the web leaving said drum, means on said air of rollers to indent the web passing there etween alternately at opposite sides thereof, a table located below said pair of rollers to receive said web as it falls thereon in a stack of connected leaves, a train of gears to drive said rollers and drum, and means for o eratin said train.
4.
