My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in seals, and has for its object to provide a simple and highly eflicient closure for a locking device which cannot be opened While the seal is in place without first puncturing said seal, which puncture must be in such a position in order to open the lock as to be clearly observable upon even casual inspection. The locking device to which my seal is adapted primarily is to secure two members together, such, for illustrations, as a freight car door to its jamb, the flap of a mail sack to the body of such mail sack, the gas controlling handle of a gas meter to the fixed handle of the same, etc. In fact, my seal is adapted for use in a locking device where in tampering with such locking device it is desirable that knowledge of the same may be had upon even casual inspection of the seal.
My seals may be formed in single units, or they may be formed in strips duly perforated at their junction so as to be readily separated for use, or they may be formed in any other convenient manner.
Fig. I is a front view of one of my improved seals.
Fig. II is a front elevation of that portion of one type of lock which I employ and which I designate as the keeper, with my seal inserted therein.

In the drawingA designates a seal formed out of any desired material, such as a tincoated metal, terne plate, or other non-rusting metal or of relatively thick waterproof card or fiber board which may be relatively easily punctured when it is desired to unlock the locking device, but which puncture remains clearly observable upon even casual inspection.

It is to be understood that I am illustrating merely one type of locking device keeper, which may be changed depending on the particular use to which the locking device is to be put. C are cams within said keeper near the front face thereof. D is an aperture in the front portion and communicating with the interior of said keeper. E are shoulders above said cams as appear most clearly in dotted lines in Fig. II. The locking member (not shown) is adapted to enter said keeper at F and is adapted to close such entrance and thereby prevent the removal of the seal, which is shown in said keeper in Figs. II and III.
The seal is'first inserted in the keeper B, the lugs or ears 2 and 3 fitting over the cam 0 whereby said seal may be pressed forwardly approximately against the front inner portion of said keeper and immediately adjacent the opening D. When the seal has thereon observable through the opening D in the keeper A, the locking member of the locking device is inserted through the opening F and the locking lugs thereon (not shown) 2 pass over the tops of the cams C. This effectually locks said seal in position and the locking member can only be released by puncturing the seal with a suitable tool whereby the locking lugs may be released from said cams. I may form my seals with the lower portion of the skirt 4 cut away as shown at 9.
