Description

D. M. READ.
POCKET-BOOK FASTENING.
Patented Marchl4,1876- vmnissi mvm= 4Q 9 04 BY 7 I momlns.
N-FETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D Gv UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL M. READ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m POCKET-BOOK FASTENINIGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,739, dated March 14, 1876, application filed January 31, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL M.'READ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Fastener for Pocket-Books, &c., of
which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a face view of myiinproved fastener, shown as applied to a pocketbook. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line may, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- Y spdnding parts.
.book or other object.- To;the rear end of the base-plate A is hinged the rear end of the top or cap plate B, which is held in place when turned down parallel with the plate A by a spring, 0. The plate A is made with an offset or shoulder, a to form a space between the said plates to receive the metallic bindin g D or a catch-plate attached to the flap of y the pocket-book, or to any other object to be fastened. To the binding or plate D is attached a pin, E, which enters one'or another of the holes a formed in the base-plate A, according as the contents of the pocket-book are of greater or less bulk. The pin E may be formed of a part of the binding or plate D, so as to avoid soldering or riveting.v
In the ordinary pin and eyelet fasteners, a
slight increase of bulk in the contents of the pocket-book prevents them' from being fastened, which difliculty is entirely. obviated by my. invention, the several, holes in the baseplate A enabling the fastener to be adjusted according as the contents of the pocketbook way requires I Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure byLetters- Patent- I v The pocket-book fastening, consisting of the base-plate A, provided with a row of holes, M, the pin E, attached to or formed'of the binding or catch plate D, and the spring capplate B, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
