This invention has for its object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device whereby the removal of container closures will be effectually prevented. While it is in .ended more particularly for use upon the fuel tanks of motor vehicles, it is adapted to be applied to all containers to prevent theft of the contents. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly defined.

A portion of a fuel tank is indicated at 1, said tank having a filler tube 2 normally closed by a cap 3.
Fitting around the filler tube are bands 4: which are firmly secured together at opposite sides of the tube by bolts or rivets 5, it being noted, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, that the bands approximately encircle the filler tube and are brought close together and extend laterally in parallel relation at the portions'where the rivets are applied. Outwardly beyond the rivets, the bands again separate and are formed into the clamping members 6 passing around and secured to posts 7, 8, to support the same, the extremities being secured together by bolts or rivets 9 at the outer sides of the respective posts. The bands may be secured to the filler tube andthe posts in any preferred manner as by riveting, brazing or welding, and I have shown pins 10 driven through the bands into the solid lower ends of the posts.
Near the upper ends of the posts, diametrical openings are formed therethrough to receive the terminals 11 of a latch or keeper bar 12, the intermediate portion of which extends across and bears upon the top of the cap 3, as shown. The bar projects beyond the cap at the opposite sides thereof to points substantially central over the respective posts and are then extended laterally over and beyond the posts, as at 13, return bends l4 connecting the lateral portions or arms 13 with the terminals 11 which are parallel with and vertically under the arms. Fitted in the post 7 is a keycontrolled lock 15, preferably of the cylinder type, the bolt 16 of which is adapted to engage a recess provided in the underside of the terminal 11 inserted in the post, as shown in Fig. 3. The lock 15 is secured in place by a set screw 17, and an opening 18 is provided in the top of the post to facilitate the engagement of a screwdriver with the screw to turn the latter home, said opening being covered by the arm 13 when the keeper bar is in the capsecuring position. The use of the device will be readily understood. When the tank has been filled, the cap is placed on the filler tube, and the terminals 11 are then engaged in the openings provided therefor in the posts and slid home therein,:
the main intermediate portion of the keeper bar bearing on or just clearing the cap. The cap then cannot be lifted from the filler tube unless the keeper bar be first withdrawn, and if the bolt 16 be thrown the bar cannot be withdrawn until the lock be released by manipulation of the proper key. The keeper bar is slid laterally into place over the cap and, as it. is held at both ends, it will be guided into place with certainty so that the bolt receiving recess will be properly positioned to be 611- gaged by the bolt.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 to 7, the supporting band 20 is folded or doubled on itself at its center to form' a loop 21 encircling the filler tube, and its branches are then formed into two parallel webs connecting the loop 21 with 'arcuate post-carrying seats 22, a securing bolt 23 being inserted through the intermediate parallel webs and a similar bolt 24 being engaged through the extreme ends of the band to prevent separation of the side members thereof. A post 25 is fitted to and between the seats 22 and is pinned thereto, as indicated at 26. Near the top of the post, a diametrical opening is formed therethrough and. a keeper bar 27 is slidably fitted through said opening, the parts being so proportioned and arranged that when the bar is projected to one side it will extend over the cap, as shown in Fig. l, and prevent the lifting of the same from the filler tube. A key-controlled lock 28, preferably of the cylinder type, is secured in the post by a set screw 29 and an opening 30 is formed in the top of the post to permit the screw to be engaged by a screwdriver in assembling the parts. At each end of the bar 27 is a stop pin or lug 31 which is adapted to impinge against the post and thereby limit the movement of the bar in either direction so that it cannot be pushed or drawn from the post and. lost, it being understood that the pins 31 are fitted to the bar after the bar has been inserted through the diametrical opening in the post. The bar is provided in its under side withia recess or socket 32 to be engaged by the bolt of the lock 28 and the socket ispreterably duplicated, one near each end of the bar, so that either end of the bar may be inserted in the post when as- 25 sembli-ng the parts and the bar may be locked in either open or closed position. To insure allinernent of the: socket with the bolt, a guide pin or lug 33 is provided on the post at opposite sides thereof. \Vhen a pin 31 is over a pin 3-3, the relatively adjacent socket will be alined. with the bolt. It will, of course, be understood that the lugs 33 may be omitted by making the bar 27 fiatsided and having the opening through the post 25 correspondingly shaped.
