IMPROVEMENT. IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,642, dated March 14, 1876 applicationfiled September 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND Roonow, of Brooklyn, in-the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and tions. Fig. 4 is a detail side view of the dum- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has for its object to provide a double hoisting and lowering apparatus with adjusting mechanism, whereby the hoisting and lowering process may be carried on between any two floors of a building. In warehouses such apparatus is mostly used; and it consists, usually, of two dummies or cages, that are suspended from the ends of a rope that passes over a drum in the upper part of the building, the length of rope being such that when the platform of one of the cages or dummies is level with the uppermost floor that of the other will be on a level with the lowermost floor. Now, it is frequently necessaryor desirable to discharge goods from the uppermost floor to another than the lowermost floor of the building, or from an intermediate floor to one still farther below-in fact, to communicate between any two floors, notnecessarily the uppermost and lowermost; and in this case the old arrangement of balanced lowering and hoisting apparatus will not answer, because the rope has a certain extent, whereby when one of the dummies is in In the drawing, the letters A, B, and 0 represent three floors of a structure in which my apparatus is put up, said apparatus consisting of two dummies or cages, D and E, which are connected by a rope, F, that passes overa drum, G,hung above the top floor A, as shown. The drum G is applied with suitable brake and other devices that are usually employed on such apparatus. One end of the rope F is fastened to, and in part wound upon, a drum,
' H, that is hung inthe upper part of the cage or dummy E, said drum H bein g provided with a suitable ratchet-wheel, a, and click, which will prevent the unwinding of the rope from said drum, except when the click is thrown out of contact with the ratchet-wheel. The other end of the rope F is either fastened to the cage D, in the usual manner, or to a drum hung in the cage D, the same as the drum H is on the cage E.
In Fig. 1 the apparatus is shown to connect the upper floor A with the lower floor Gthat is, the length of rope is such that when the platform of one cage, D, is in line with the upper floor A that of the other cage, E, will be in line with the bottom floor G, and vice versaso that when a load is put on the top dummy, and the samethereupon lowered to a-level with the floor O, the other dummy will thereby be raised to a level with the floor A.
In Fig. 2 the same apparatus is shown as connecting the floors B and C-that is, the rope F, by being partly unwound from the drum H, is lengthened sufficiently to allow one cage to be in line with the floor B when the other is in -line with (l.
In Fig. 3the same apparatus is shown with the rope F considerably shortened by winding it upon the drum H, so that the two cages will connect the floors A and B. Thus, by the application of the drum H to one or both of the cages, I am enabled to connect any two floors of the structure, no matter how many floors there may be in the building, and to thus obtain anadjustable hoisting and lowering mechanism much more useful than those heretofore employed. The apparatus may, by the use of the drum H, be adjusted while it is in operation.
The invention is shown applied to apparatus in which there are two dummies, but may, with equal effect, he applied to apparatus havin g but one dummy, which is counterbalanced by a weight at the other end of the rope, and to other equivalent apparatus; and, ,in place of the ratchet-wheel and click a on the drum H, other means for locking said drum may be employed.
I claim as my invention 1. The dummy E of a hoisting and lowering apparatus, combined with the winding-drum H, which is hung in said dummy, and to which one end of the hoisting-rope is secured to be wound upon said drum, to be lengthened or
