IMPROVEMENT ,IN COTTON-SCRAPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [74,507, dated March 7, 1876; application filed i i August 7, 11575.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER EWING, of Corning, in the county of Clayton and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cotton-Scrapers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,.m'aking a part of this specification, and'to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my cotton-scraper, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sec tional detail view, and Fig. 4 is-a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
' This invention has relation to improvements in cotton-scrapers, the object of which is to chop the surplus plant out of a drill, and to clear the incline of the drill or ridge of grass, weeds, and other unnecessary growths.
- The nature of the invention consists in the combination, with a rotary cutter mounted in a suitable frame, and having the end of its shaft provided with a crank-arm, of a coiled spring attached to the end of the said crank and to the frame of the rotary cutter, whereby the said cutter will be held up out of the Way when its operating-shaft is thrown out of gear with a master-wheel. It also consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the beam of my improved scraper, which is provided upon its right front side and end with a rectangular frame, B, which affords a bearing for the journals of the shaft a. of a masterwheel, 0. This wheel is, preferably, of wood, and it may be provided with a tire. It has also free lateral movements in its bearings, one of which is in frame B, and the other in the beam A, and is provided with a rackwheel, D, upon the side next the beam, which engages with a pinion, 0, upon the front end of a rotating shaft, E, which has its bearin gs in a hanger, d, depending from the beam, and in a rectangular guard-frame, F, which is rigidly secured to the extreme rear end of the beam, with its open end downward, as shown in Fig. 1. G represents a U-shaped cutter, which is secured upon shaft E, where it passes through guard 'frame F, and is actuated through shaft E and pinion 0 by the rotation of master-wheel G as themachine is drawn over the ground' Wheel 0 is held to its engagement with pinion c by means of a spring, 8, which is applied on shaft a between the said wheel and its outer bearing in frame B, and is suitably compressed between the same. When it is not desirable to operate the cutter, wheel (J is thrown out of gear with pinion c by means of a lever, H, which is pivoted at e to the beam, and extends rearwardly to within convenient reach of the operator holding the plow-handles I I, passes from its fulcrum along the beam, is bent downward outside the same, and is connected loosely with the projecting end of the journal of shaft or. This lever, when thrust to the left, will throw the rack-wheel and pinion out of engagement, and when engaged with a catch, f, upon the round 9 bracing the handles I I, will hold them in 'this position. In order to hold rotary cutter Gr out of the way of casual injury when not in use,'the end of its shaft E is provided with a crank-arm, h, to which a spring, S, of suitable-strength is attached, the other end of the said spring being attached to the guardframe F, as shown in Fig. 1. This spring, by its reaction, will give shaft E a semi-rotation, swinging its cutter up into its guard F. Beam A, before alluded to, is provided with a scraper-standard, J, upon the-lower beveled end of which is pivoted a metallic scraper, K, which is guided in its vibrations by means of a bolt passing through a curved slot cut in the scraper into the standard. This scraper is adjusted to suit a flat or sharp ridge by means of a metallic rod, L, attached to the upper end of the said scraper, and passing up through a metallic plate, 70, rigidly secured in a horizontal position to beam A, and the adjustment thus obtained is maintained by means of nuts napplied 'upon the screwthreaded upper end of the said rod, the one above and the other below plate It. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cotton-scraper, the spring S, in combination'with rotating cutter-bearing shaft E, having crank-arm h, substantially as specified.
2. The laterally-movable master-wheel O and spring 3, in combination with the rotating cutter-bearing shaft E, having pinion 0, substantially asspecified.
3. The vibrating lever H, in combination with a laterally-movable master-wheel O, shaft 1 E, and pinion a, substantially as specified.
