This invention relates to a receptacle and themethodof making the same, and more particularly to a milk can or similar oontainer wherein a unitary portion affording a seamlessneck and breast is Secured to the body portion to provide a smooth interior and a rigid strong oint affording at its top an outwardly extending peripheral shoulder which serves as a stop shoulder for positioning a bumper band.
i In the past many types of oints have been employed toV unite theV breast and body por-j tions of a receptacle, and though thesejoints, in many cases,.were suiiciently strong, they have proved objectionable due tothe undesirably large expenditure of time, labor, and
' materials, necessitated by their construction. lIhis inventionfseeks to overcome the above noted objections inthe provision ofa receptacle utilizing a one-piece neckand breast, wherein the body portion is joined to the breast portion quickly and easily and the joint therebetween, which may be electrically welded, is of double thickness and thereby reinforced efficiently and very economically.
Another object ofthis invention is to provide means for reinforcing the oint between the two portions of the receptacle with an obvious saving of time and material.v

In the illustrated embodiment of this invention there is shown a milk can, designated in general by the reference numeral 1, whichk is formed by joininga body portion 2 and a breast portion-3. After the breast and body portions are joined as hereinabove explained the bumperor reinforcing band 7 is engaged be `noted that the breast.. portion o around the exterior of the marginal 'portion'` 6. This bumper band 7 may be put on in any desired manner, such as pressed on, welded, shrunk, rolled, etc., but which is prefern ably forced on and later rolled or welded, for further' strengthening the joint. The band 7, as shoWn'in Figure 2, abutsk the shoulder formed by the rim 4, whereby the band is held in place and can never drop downeven thoughthe bumper band becomes somewhat `loosened from the exterior surface of the breast portion.
It is, of course, understood that after the parts are assembled inthe manner previously described, the can is tinned over theinterior and `exterior surfaces to enhance its appearance and adapt the same to be easily and thoroughly cleansed. The exterior tinning serves' to seal the bumper band on lthe can making the joints thoroughly sanitary. l
From the foregoing it is apparent thatfI y have provided a milk can or similar container j the breast and body portions of which are united by a simple inexpensive joint and reinforced by a bumper band readily and easily applied without detracting from the appearance of the container.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and I, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a receptacle, a smooth-walled body portion, a breast portion having a margin of substantially the same size and contour as said body portion, an outwardly offset rim on said mar in providing an outer shoulder and telescopically engaged over and secured to the upper part of said body portion, and
Ra bumper band around said margin entirely v'above said rim and in abutment with said shoulder.
2. In a receptacle, a body portion, a breast portion, an outwardly offset rim on one of said portions telescopically engaged over and secured to the adjacent end of the other of said portions, said rim providing a shoulder abutted on the inner side thereof by said other portion, and a bumper band around one of said portions only and having an edge thereof abutting the outer side of said shoulder.
