This invention relates to a machine for printing pictures from negatives and for printing borders, an object of the invention being to provide a frame having an opening therein with a lamp casing under the frame so that the rays of light from a lamp in said casing will pass through the opening, with means for holding a picture or border mask over the opening and pedal operated means for applying pressure to the sensitized paper placed on the mask.
Another object of the invention is to provide a block which carries the pressure means,
. with means for moving the block vertically and in an arc of a circle by the pedal while holding the block and its pressure means parallel with the mask.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means for closing the circuit to the lamp when the block is in its lowered position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughoutthe several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of the entire device.

Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the upper portion of the left hand side thereof, this view showing the pressure applying means in raised position.

In these drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a table which is provided with a top 2 and 3 indicates a frame attached to the top, this frame having its top sloping downwardly and forwardly as shown. The top of the frame is formed with an opening at and a lamp casing 5 is attached to the under side of the top and forms a reflector for the lamp bulb 6 carried by the socket 7, so that the rays of light from the lamp bulb will be directed through the opening. This opening is covered by a plate of glass 8 which rests on the frame and a printing mask A is adapted to rest on the plate 8 when pictures are to be printed. When borders are to be printed, the glass and the mask A. are removed and a border printing mask B is placed in the opening.
Bearing posts 9 are carried by the frame 3, one post being of greater height than the other and a shaft 10 is journaled in these posts. A pair of arms 11 is fastened to the shaft 10 and a block 12 is pivoted to the outer ends of the armsby the pins 13 which projectfrom the ends of the block. An arm 14 is pivoted to the upper end of the long post 9 and the outer end of this arm is connected by a link 15 with one of the pins 13. Thus as the shaft 10 is rocked, the arms 11 will cause the block to move upwardly or downwardly according to the direction of movement of the shaft and the arm e and the link 15 will cause said block to remain in a position parallel with the top of the frame 3.
A presser plate 16 is slidably connected with the block through means of the pins 17 and the coil springs 18 on said pins act to transmit pressure from the block 12 to the plate 16. This plate 16 has a metal plate 19 detachably connected to its lower face through means of the screws 20 adjacent one edge of the plate 16, engaging notches in an edge of the plate 19 and a latch member 21 at the opposite edge of the plate 16 engaging the opposite edge of the plate 19, this latch member being made in the form of a spring plunger. Thus by depressing the plunger, the front edge of the plate 19 will be released and then it can be pulled from the screws 20 and thus removed from the presser plate.
A pad 22 of rubber or the like is attached to the under face of the plate 19. This pad will engage the sensitized paper placed in the mask when the parts are in operative position.
An arm 23 is connected with one end of the shaft 10 and extends rearwardly and is pivotally connected to a link 24 by a pin 25. A lever 26 is pivoted to a rearwardly extending bracket 27 attached to the frame 3, and the front end of this lever is pivoted to the rear end of the link 24 by a pin 28. A projection 29 on the lever is adapted to engage a projection 30 on the rear end of the link to cause the upward movement of the lever to raise the link. The tail of said lever is pivotally connected to a rod 31'which has its rear end connected to the rear end of a pedal which is pivoted at its front end to a lower part of the table. A coil spring 33 has its lower end connected with an eye bolt 34 carried by the table top and its upper end is connected to a clip 35 which is carried by the pin 25. This spring acts to counterbalance the pressure applying device.
An arm 36 is attached to the left hand end of the shaft 10 and carries a contact screw 37 which is insulated from the arm, as shown at 38. This screw is adapted to close the switch 39 when the block and its presser plate are in lowered position so as to close the circuit 40 of the lamp 6.
A lamp 41, having red bulb, is provided for furnishing a red light to work by.
The mask A is composed of a frame 42 with a very thin plate 43 soldered or otherwise fastened to its lower face, this plate having an opening 44 therein through which the light passes. Projections 45 are formed on the top corners of the frame 42 and have holes 46 therein for fitting over pins 47 on the top of the frame 3 adjacent the opening therein so that the mask is held on the frame over the opening. T 1e lower corners of the frame 42 are also provided with projections 48 which are curved upwardly to form fingerholds to facilitate the lifting of the mask. Notches 49 are formed in the inner edges of the frame 42 to facilitate removal of the sensitized paper in the frame.
The mask 13 is composed of an upper and lower section 50 which are fastened together by the screws 51, with the border plate 52 between them. This plate can be adjusted through means of the set screws 53 passing through the edges of the mask B. The border plate is formed of transparent material with an opaque central portion 54.
From the foregoing it will be seen that with the rocker block and presser plate in raised position and with the mask A in place, the negative to be printed is placed on the glass 8 and under the mask, the mask being raised slightly to permit the negative to be placed thereunder. f course, that part of the negative to be printed must-appear at the opening 44 in the plate 43 of the mask. The sensitized paper is then placed in the mask, the paper fitting in the frame 42 and resting upon the plate 43. Then the pedal is depressed, which will rock the lever 6 and this movement of the lever will lift the link 24 by the engagement of the projection 29 with the projection 30 so as to cause the link to raise the arm 23, which will rock the shaft 10, and this movement of shaft 10 will lower the arms 11 and 14 so as to move the block and its presser plate downwardly to cause the pad to press upon the paper in the mask and press the central portion thereof against the negative. The springs 18 will exert a yielding pressure on the presser plate from the block. At this time, the circuit to the lamp 6 will be closed by the contact on the arm 36 closing the switch of the circuit and thus the rays of lightfrom the lamp will pass through the negative and cause the picture to be printed on the sensitized paper. After the necessary exposure has been made to print the picture, pressure on the pedal is removed so that the parts can return to raised position and the light extinguished. Thus prints can be made from negatives very quickly and very easily.
When a border is to be printed, the print ing mask A is removed, as is also the glass plate 8. Then the border mask B is placed in the opening 4. In printing borders, the plate 19 with its pad is removed and another plate substituted therefor, which contains a larger pad. Then the device is operated to print the border the same as when printing a picture. I
In the modification shown in Figure 12, the presser plate 16 is connected to the block 12 by the looped springs 18. A single pin 17 is arranged at the center of the block and has a head on its lower end engaging the depression in the presser plate, and a coil spring 18 surrounds said spring. The lower face of this presser plate 16 is formed with the guideways 55 for slidingly receiving the pad carrying plate 19 which is not shown in this view. This Figure 12 also shows the lamp casing as formed of two sections. the upper section 56 having straight walls and the lower section 57 being formed with a flaring upper end which fits in the section 56 and is suitably secured therein. The section 56 carries the red lamp ll and the lower partof the section 57 has therein a plurality of lamps 6 for providing the light for the printing purposes. In other respects, this form of the invention is similar to that first described.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
V hat I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening therein, a lamp casing attached to the under side of the support and having a lamp therein, a circuit for the lamp, means for holding a negative and a sheet of sensitized material over the opening, means for applying pressure to the sensitized material to force it against the negative, means for closing the circuit to the lamp by the pressure applying means, such pressure applying means comprising a shaft rotatably supported from the support, arms carried by the shaft, a block pivoted to the outer ends of the arms, a presser plate movably attached to the block, springs for causing the block to apply pressure to the plate, pedal operated means for rocking the shaft, and means for holding the block and the presser plate parallel with the face of the support during the movement of the block and presser plate.
2. A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening therein, a lamp casing attached to the under face of the support and having a lamp therein, means for holding a negative and a sheet of sensitized material over the opening, bearing posts on the support, one post being of greater height than the other, a shaft journaled in said posts, arms connected with the shaft, a block pivoted to the outer ends of the arms, a presser plate movably connected with the block for applying pressure to the sheet, spring means between the plate and block, an arm pivoted to the upper end of the long post, a link connecting the outer end of the arm with one of the pivots which connects the block with its arms and pedal operated means for rocking the shaft.

A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening therein, a lamp casing attached to the under face of the support and having a lamp therein, means for holding a negative and a sheet of sensitized material over the opening, bearing posts on the support, one post being of greater height than the other, a shaft ournaled in said posts, arms connected with the shaft, a block pivoted to the outer ends of the arms, a presser plate movably connected with the block for applying pressure to the sheet, spring means between the plate and block, an arm pivoted to the upper end of the long post, a link connecting the outer end of the arm with one of the pivots which connects the block with its arms, pedal operated means for rocking the shaft, such means comprising a lever pivoted to the rear part of the support, a rearwardly extending arm on the shaft, a link connecting the front end of the lever with the rear end of the arm, and a rod connecting the tail of the lever with the pedal.
4. A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening therein, a lamp casing attached to the under face of the support and having a lamp therein, means for holding a negative and a sheet of sensitized material over the opening, bearing posts on the support, one post being of greater height than the other, a shaft journaled in said posts, arms connected with the shaft, a block pivoted to the outer ends of the arms, a presser plate movably connected with the block for applying pressure to the sheet, spring means between the plate and block, an arm pivoted to the upper end of the long post, a link connecting the outer end of the arm with one of the pivots which connects the block with its arms, pedal operated means for rocking the shaft, such means comprising a lever pivoted to the rear part of the support, a rearwardly extending arm on the shaft, a link connecting the front end of the lever with the rear end of the arm, a rod connecting the tail of the lever with the pedal, and a coil spring having one end connected with the support and its other end connected with the junction of the link with the rearwardly extending arm on the shaft.
5. A device of the class described comprising a support having an opening therein, a lamp casing attached to the under face of the support and having a lamp therein, means for holding a negative and a sheet of sensitized material over the opening, bearing posts on the support, one post being of greater height than the other, a shaft journaled in said posts, arms connected with the shaft, a block pivoted to the outer ends of the arms, a presser plate movably connected with the block for applying pressure to the sheet, spring means between the plate and block, an arm pivoted to the upper end of the long post, a link connecting the outer end of the arm with one of the pivots whichconnects the block with its arms, pedals operated means for rocking the shaft, such means comprising a lever pivoted to the rear part of the support, a rearwardly extending arm on the shaft, a
link connecting the front end of the lever with the rear end of the arm, a rod connecting the tail of the lever with the pedal, a coil spring having one end connected with the support and its other end connected with the junction of the link with the rearwardly extending arm on the shaft, another arm connected with the shaft, a switch closing part carried by said arm and a circuit for the lamp closed by said switch. 7
