COUPON HOLDER Filed Oct. 5, 1928 Z771 h/071' Ecnond/ 1Q. 5 waz/varo.
- @Wij @i Patented Jan. 21, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDMOND R. SULLIVAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, T HOOD RUBBER COMPANY, INC., OF WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS, A.
CORPORATION OF DELAWARE COUPON HOLDER Application filed October 5, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in coupon holders and has for its Object to provide a practical, convenient and inexpensive device for holding coupons or tickets, such A, as are utilized by workmen in keeping record f during the interval which elapses after the workmen have surrendered the record of their work to the pay-roll department.
Still another object of the invention is to conservespace in the ultimate size of the holder by employing wire fastening members for simultaneously spacing the pockets and holding the adjacent faces of the facingl strip and back portion together.
The invention consists in av coupon'holder as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a coupon holder embodying my invention, the flap being shown in open posit-ion and a portion of the holder being broken away to save space in the drawings.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the l line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view 4similar to Fig. 1 but illustrat-ing the coupons sealed to the holder by the flap.`
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line LLP-4 of Fig. 3.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 'represents a holder constructed of sheet material such as cardboard and comprising a back portion 6, a marginal portion of which is folded at 7 to form a facing strip 8. After the facing strip 8 has been folded upon the back portion 6 the adjacent faces of the strip and back portion are held in close proximity to each other by Serial No. 310,646.
means of a plurality of fastener members 9 of well known form, said fastener members being spaced at regular intervals apart to form spaces or pockets 10 between said faces.
The fastener members 9 are inserted through h the facing strip 8 and back portion 6 of the holder and are clinched against said back portion in a well known manner.
It will be evident that by varying the pressure applied to the fastening members in clinching the same that the pockets may be rendered relatively loose or tight as may be desired to accommodate coupons of predetermined thickness.
The pockets 10 are provided for the purA pose of receiving coupons 11 which are eonstructed of sheet material such as cardboard. These coupons have suitable identification marks printed thereon, together with other data relating to the particular job or operac tion they represent and the value of the operation to the workmen. I
rlhe pockets 10 are numbered consecutively from top to bottom as illustrated at 12, the
numbers preferably being printed upon the f outer surface of the facing strip S, although it is evident that` these numbers may be lo cated at other points upo'n the holder adjacent i to the pockets. The back portion 6 is preferably scored at 13 from top to bottom to forni a flap 14tandthe front surface of said flap between the scored line 13 and the edge of the flap is covered with a suitable adhesive 15. After the coupons have been inserted within the pockets 10, the flap 14: is folded forwardly upon the back portion 6 and after the adhesive 15 has been moistened, the flap is pressed downwardly against the front face of the coupons and the latter' are thereafter confined within the pockets and firmly sealed to the holder.
The coupon holder of this invention is used as follows Each workman is provided with a suitable number of holders 5, each bearing a suitable number or character to identify the workman. When a particular job is distributed to the workman a coupon identifying the particular job accompanies the work,v and after the job is completed, the coupon is inserted in one of the pockets 1() of the holder. lith the holder of this invention, if the workman so desires, he may fold over the flap 14 at any time after a coupon has been inserted therein and he may moisten a portion of the adhesive as the coupons are inserted in order that the latter may be sealed firmly in the holder, or if he so desires, be may waituntil the end of the period for which his particular holder is provided and when it is time to surrender the holder, he may moisten the flap 14 and seal all of the coupons to the holder at the same time. In either event, after the holder has left the hands of the workman and is in the possession of the person or persons whose dut-y it is to compute the wages of the workman there will be no danger of the coupons falling out of the holder and being lost, and the workman is always assured that he* will recive a correct renumeration for the work that he has performed.
While it is evident that any number of pockets may be provided upon the holder, I have found it desirable to limit the number to ten, as this number makes it, possible to easily compute the total amount of wages due the workman.
I claim:
1. A coupon holder of the character de scribed comprising a back portion provided with a plurality of coupon-receiving spaces, and means upon said back portion to seal coupons within said spaces.
2. A coupon holder of the character described comprising a back portion provided with a plurality of coupon-receiving pockets, and means upon said back portion to seal coupons Within said pockets.
3.. A coupon holder of sheet material comprising a back portion provided with a plurality of coupon-receiving pockets and a fiap upon said back portion adapted to seal coupons within said pockets.
4. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion, a facing strip upon said back portion and co-operating therewith to form spaces therebetween, and means upon the back portion to seal coupons within said spaces.
5. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion, a facing strip upon said back portion and (t0-operating therewith to form spaces therebetween, a iiap upon the back portion and an adhesive upon said flap whereby the latter may be sealed to coupons located within said spaces.
6. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion, a facing strip therefor, means to fasten said strip to the back portion and simultaneously form a plurality of couponreeeiving spaces therebetween. a flap upon the back portion and an adhesive' upon said flap to seal tl e latter to coupons located within said spaces.
7. A coupon holder of the character dcscribed comprising, in combination, a back portion, a facing strip therefor, a plurality of fastener members extendin; r through said strip and back portion and securing the former to the latter and also forniing coupon lreceiving spaces therebetween, a flap upon the back portion and an adhesive upon said flap to seal the latter to coupons located within said spaces.
8. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion of sheet material, a marginal portion thereof being' folded thereon and secured thereto to form a plurality of coupon-receiving pockets, a flap upon said back portion and an adhesive upon said flap whereby the latter may be sealed to coupons located within said pockets.
9. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion of sheet material. a marginal portion thereof being folded thereon, a plurality of fastener members extending through said marginal portion and body portion and forming coupon-receiving pockets therebetween, a flap upon said back portion and an adhesive upon si id flap whereby the latter may be sealed to coupons located within said pockets.
10. A coupon holder of t-he character described comprising a back portion provided with a plurality of coupon-receiving pockets, numerals arranged consecutively upon said pockets, and means upon said back portion to confine and seal coupons within said pockets.
11. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion, a facing strip upon said back portion and co-operating therewith to form spaces therebetween, numerals designating said spaces and applied consecutively to said fac ing strip, and means upon the back portion to confine and seal coupons within said spaces.
12. A coupon holder of the character described comprising, in combination, a back portion of sheet material. a marginal portion thereof being,r folded thereon. a pluralitv of wire fastener members extending through said marginal portion and body portion and clinched upon the reverse face of the latter a nd forming coupon-receiving pockets therebetween. a flap upon said hack portion. and an adhesive upon said flap whereby the latter may be sealed to coupons located within said pockets.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
