DISPENSER Filed May 25, 1927 INVENTOR MAX HOLLEN DER ATTO NEY Patented Jan. 14, 1930 PATENT OFFICE MAX HOLLENDER, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
DISPENSER Application filed May 25, 1927. Serial No. 194,243.
This invention .relates to dispensers for lumpable granular substances, such as sugar and salt, but more particularly forsugar. One object of the invention is to provide for 6 the free dispensing of a granular substance without permitting the discharge of lumps or particles of foreign matter materially larger than the normal grains of the substance to be discharged, through a dis- 10 charge orifice of generous proportions, and
at the same time to provide for the stoppering of the discharge orifice when the dispenser is not in use. A further ob ect of the invention is to combine the functionmg of a stopper and a strainer, the one normally within, and the other normally w thout the dispenser, and the two flexibly linked together through a discharge orificeso that a movement of the dispenser into discharging position will automatically effect the falling away of the stopper and the utilization of its weight to pull the strainer into functioning position, and when the dispenser is replaced into normal upright position, the strainer will fall away from the discharge opening and pull the stopper into stoppering position about the mouth of the discharge orifice. A further object of the invention is so to shape and coordinate an internal strainer and a discharge throat as to provide a relatively large straining area independently of the size of the discharge orifice.
A further object of the invention is to form an improved dispenser for a substance of the class described, one in which the body portion may be formed of glass, and other portions more easily breakable may be formed of unbreakable material. The above and further objects of the invention will be pointed out more particularly in thefollowing claim which is directed to the illustrative embodiment of the invention described in the following specification, in connection with the accompanying drawings, merely for purposes of illustration and not limitation.
Referring more in detail to the drawings. Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a preferred embodiment of the dispenser;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, parts being shown in elevation;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one form of the strainer drawn to an enlarged scale;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the strainer with the attached flexible link, the latter being broken away; and
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the parts in dispensing position.
Preferably, a central or body portion A is formed and subjected to suitable ornamentation out of some transparent material, prea ferably glass, so as to provide an interior storage chamber 1. struction, the bottom rim 2 and the top rim 3 of the body portion A is threaded, the bottom to take the threaded rim 4 of a bottom cap or base support, completing thebottom closure for the chamber 1. I
The threaded rim 5 of a dispensing throat member 6 takes over the threads'3 on the upper end of the body portion A. This dispensing throat member is provided with a dispensing orifice 7 of generous dimensions centrally and upwardly positioned. The throat member 6 may be formed of unbreakable material, such as spun metal or of glass, if desired, or if certain advantages of the in-.' vention are to be dispensed with. it may be formed integrally with the body portion A of glass.
An outside stopper B of a size too large to pass through the dispensing orifice 7 is provided. It is preferred that this stopper be spherical and it may be of metal or glass, or of any other suitable material, preferably moldable. Embedded in or otherwise suitably secured to the stopper B is a flexible link C passing inwardly through the orifice 7 to the center of V a metal strainer D, to which it is fixably secured. The metal strainer D is dish-shaped preferably, and of a diameter too large to pass out through the dispensing orifice 7. It is provided with strainer perforations 8 and marginal serrations 9, the points of which are adapted to fit within the inner wall of the throat- 7, and with it form a strainer margin about the strainer D.
When the dispenser is operated to dispense In the breferred consugar 10, it is grasped by the hand about the body portion lifted and pulled over with the orifice 7 directed downward, or slantwise downward, preferably. The stopper B falls out of the orifice 7 and through the medium of the link C drags the strainer\ D into engagement with the inner walls ofthe throat 6, to constrain the sugar contained within the chamber 1 to flow through the perforations and serrations of the strainer D before it can reach the dispensing orifice 7. This assures the retention of lumps and foreign matter.
When the dis enser is replaced upon its base 4, the weig t of the strainer D acting through the flexible link C, pulls the stopper B up the inclined face of the dispensing throat- 6 into closing position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the strainer D remaining pendant within the structure ready for automatic operation when the dispenser is again used to dispense the sugar or other granular substance employed.
Although the dispensing orifice on account of its generous size is large enough to permit the undesired entrance of insects, the provision of the external stopper makes this impossible, particularly on account of the fact that except when in actual use in dispensing sugar, the stopper is in closedposiupright or inverted position of said distion, the closing being effected automatically.
Further attention is called to the fact that the means and method of combining the internal strainer and the external stopper is such as to prevent the user from deliberately.
or. accidently removing either from the dis- Y penser. In other words, the combined sto per and strainer are coordinated with t e dispenser to form a permanent combination with each other and with the dispenser.
The inventive thought may have a variety of expressions as is contemplated in what I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent as follows:
A dispenser for a lumpable, granular substance comprising a body portion providing a storage chamber, and having a bottom closure forming a supportin base; a top portion having a central disc arge opening and providing a dispensing passage converging from said storage chamber to said discharge opening; an outside stopper for said discharge opening; an inside strainer larger in diameter than said discharge opening and larger in diameter than the diameter of the converging walls adjacent said discharge opening and adapted to remain within the enclosure of said dispenser and to present a larger area of sifting surface than the area of said discharge opening with the discharge side of said strainer unobstructed for the free discharge of granular substance to said discharge opening; and a flexible link means connecting said stopper with said strainer'whereby, according to the
