I will describe one form of signaling system embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
The accompanying drawing is a diagrammatic view showing one form of signaling system embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the reference characters 1 and 1 designate the track rails of a stretch of railway track M over which traffic moves in both directions. These rails are divided by insulated joints 38-to form a track section A D, and the section A-D contains a switch Swhich leads from the main trackM to a passing siding C. I
Section A-D is provided with a track circuit, comprising a battery 2 connected across the rails at one end of the section, and a track relay T connected across the rails at the other end of the section. The track rails of both the main track M and the passing siding C are included in this track circuit in the usual and well known manner. 7
Eastbound trafiic through the section A-D is governed by a signal S having a main arm 3, an auxiliary arm 3*, and a callingon arm 3. Westbound traflic through the section is governed by a signal S having a main arm 3 an auxiliary arm 3", and a calling-on arm 3. In accordance with usual practice, the main arm 3 and the calling-on arm 3 of signal S are located adjacent the main track M, and the auxiliary arm 3 is located adjacent the siding C. When either arm 3 is in the clear position it indicates that switch S isin its normal position and. that high speed traflicover this switch is permissible. When either arm 3 is in the clear position, it indicates that switchS is in the reverse position and that low speed traffic over this switch is permissible. The reference character K designates a switch indication relay which is controlled by a pole-changer 4 operatively connected with the switch S. When the switch is in the normal position, relay K is energized in the normal direction, whereaswhen the switch is in the reverse position this relay is energized in the reverse direction. The circuit for relay K will be obvious from the drawing.
The signals are controlled by three stick relays F F and I and these relays are in turn controlledby three selectors X X and X. These selectors are controlledfrom a remote point such as a despatchers oflice. Each selector comprises a normally open contact 6 which momentarily becomes closed when the selector receives the code impulse combination to which it is designed to respond. A fourth selector X is provided for a purpose which will appear hereinafter.
Each arm of each signal is provided with a 1 cont-r01 relay designated by the reference character H with a suitable exponent and a suitable subscript. .F or example, the main arm 3 of signal S isprovided with a control or home relay H and the signal arm is controlled by a contact 32 of this relay through a circuit which will be obvious from the drawing. I v V I will assume that switch S is in the normal position, and that the despatcher desires to permit an eastbound train to pass through the section AD. I will now assume that the despatcher (lee siresto permit a westbound train to pass through'section AD. To do this, heoperatesselector X thereby closing the pickup circuit for relay FW; this circuit is from terminal B, through wire 5, Contact 6 of selector X wire 11, and the winding of relay 1?? to terminal O. As soon as relay F becomes energized, a stick circuit for this relay is closed, which circuit passes from terminalB through resistance 8, back contact 12 of relay 1 F front contact 13 of relay F and the winding of relay F to terminal 0. If switch S be in the normal position relay H will become energized, its circuitbeingfrom terminal B through contact 21 of, trackrelay T, contact 22 of relay F neutral contact 23 of relay K, polar contact 24 of relay K inthe normal position, and the winding of relay H toterminal O. In combination, a section of railway track, a track circuit including a track relay for said section, an eastbound main signal and a westbound main signal for said section, an eastbound calling-on signal and a westbound calling-on signal for said section, an eastbound stick relay and a west-, bound stick relay, an eastbound home relay for said eastbound main signal, a westbound home relay for said westbound main signal, a calling-on stick relay, an eastbound callingon relay for said eastbound calling-on signal, a westbound calling-on relay for said west-- bound calling-on signal, means including .selectors for energizing said stick relays, means for energizing the eastbound or the westbound home relay provided the associated stick relay and said track relay are energized, and means operating when said calling-on stick relay is energized to energize the eastbound or the westbound calling-on relay according as the eastbound or the westbound stick relay is energized and provided the associated home relay is ole-energized.

In combination, a section of railway track containing a switch, a trackcircuit including a track relay for said section, a main signal and an auxiliary signal as well as a calling-on signal governing eastbound traflic through said switch, a main signal and an auxiliary signal as well as a calling-on signal governing westbound traflic through said switch, an eastbound relay, a westbound relay and a calling-on relay, means including selectors for energizing said relays, means operating when said eastbound relay is energized to clear the main or the auxiliary eastbound signal according as said switch is in the normal or the reverse position and provided said track relay is energized, means operating when said Westbound relay is energized to clear the main or the auxiliary westbound signal according as said switch is in the normal or the reverse position and provided said track relay is energized, and means operating when said calling-on relay is energized toclear said eastbound or'said west bound calling-on signal according as said eastbound or said westbound relay is energized and provided said track relay is deenergized.
