PIPE BENDING DEVICE Filed Nov. 19, 1928 Patented Jan. 7, 1930 JOHN $UNDGREN, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA PIPE-BENDING DEVICE Application filed November 19, 1928. Serial No. 320,410.
This invention relates to pipe bending devices'and has special reference to a portable mechanism of this character.
T he principal object of my present invention is to provide a device having novel features of advantage over my former pipe bending device patented March 27th, 1928, No. 1,664,138.
Another more specific object is that of pro- 1 viding means whereby such a device is readily self sustained upon a support.
Still another object is to provide means whereby the supporting elements are adj ustable or reversible to accommodate varying circumstances in the pipe bending art.
Other novel features and advantages will appear in the further description of the invention.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved pipe bending device as it would appear applied to an upright support; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device from the opposite side thereof as it might appear at rest.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device showing one of the brackets in reversed position to that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
1 represents a central body portion having opposed semi-circularly shaped ears 2 upon opposite sides thereof, they being for pivotal connection 'ith the supporting members 3 and 4.
On the front face of the body portion and formed integral therewith are the two opposed pipe engaging spaced jaws 5 and 6, they being of arcuate form and oppositely disposed as viewed from the front thereof, and concaved throughout as at 7. These concavcd portions i prefer to form slightly ser rated or grooved as illustrated for more positive non-slipping engagement with the surface of the pipe being operated upon.
The opposite side or back of the central body portion is provided with three spaced rib-like extensions, the ones 8 and 9 adjacent the extreme opposite ends of the body portion and the other one 10 centrally thereof, the object of which will be described later.
The supporting elements 3 and 4 are pivotally attached to the ears 2 of the body as by the thumb bolts 11 and 12 respectively; these bolts being screw threadedly mounted within the innermost ones of their respective spaced lugs 13 which straddle the ears of the body portion, though the supporting elements may assume any pivotal position desired for example that shown in Figure 1 for engagement about a post or support as indicatedin dotted lines at 14. 1
The member or supporting bracket 3 is provided with two spaced set screws as indicated at 15, they being screw threadedly mounted within the bracket and adjustable there through simply for the purpose of providing positive spring-like members for non-slipping contact with the post or timber engaged,
while the opposite supporting bracket 4: is provided with a transverse rib or lip upon the outermost edge thereof as indicated at 16 for like purposes. It will be understood that when the supporting brackets are disposed upon the body portion 1 in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and a pipe to be bent is placedintermediate of the jaws 5 and 6, the pipe bending device may be placed with the supporting brackets against opposite sides of a post of suitable size, when a downward stress is put upon the pipe say to the left side of the device the supporting bracketswill become tightly clamped against the post and there remain even during longitudinal adjustment of the pipe during the bending process thereof. Furthermore a comparatively light jar or lifting stress upon the pipe and against the device will suffice to loosen it from the supporting timber.
Now in the event of the device being used upon a fixed piece or pipe, or for bending a pipe without the device itself being fixed, I have provided a hole 17 in the bracket 4, it
being somewhat reinforced about the outermost edge thereof and in axial alignment with the circular knob or pin 18 formed upon the back of the bending jaws 6 when the bracket 1 is installed upon the body portion .in the reverse position to that shown ingthe drawings. This reversed position is accomplished by unscrewing the thumb bolt 12 and reversing the bracket which is then held in such position by the thumb bolt being inserted from the same side of the bracket as illustrated. That is to say the innermost lug 13 of the bracket will then be on the same side of the body portion as the pin 18 and itbeing the screw threaded side as previously stated will receive the screw threaded end of the thumb bolt 12, thus bringing the hole 17 in alignment with the pin 18. A set screw 19 is provided as extending through the base of the lugs 13 of the bracket at transverse the axis of the hole 17 so that when a piece of pipe to be used as a handle for the device is inserted through the hole 17 and onto the pin 18 the set screw 19 may be tightened against said pipe for holding same firmly in such handle-like position in respect to the bender. hen thus employed the bracket 3 may or may not be removed entirely as desired, thus providing an exceedingly simple and convenient device for moving longitudinally a pipe to be bent and applying any desired bending pressure thereto.
It will be noted that the innermost lug 13 of the bracket 4 does not terminate arcuately as the outermost one does but is squared as at 20 on such innermost end and which is for the purpose of abutting against the face of the squared spaced lugs 21 upon opposite sides of the pin 18 and inwardly therefrom, in fact just within the corner formed intermediate of the back of the jaw 7 and ear 2, so as to provide a firm and positive positioning of the bracket in respect to the body portion when thus reversed and employed as a bending tool. The office of the ribs 8, 9 and 10 now becomes obvious in that they provide a contacting face in a plane with the face of the innermost lugs on the bracket when applied to a post or the like, thus making a firm and unyielding contact therewith.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have devised an exceedingly simple, practical, and convenient pipe bending tool which may be employed either in a. portable or stationary manner, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A pipe bending device of the character described comprising a body portion carrying laterally disposed pipe engaging jaws thereupon, and supporting brackets pivotally mounted upon opposite sides of the body portion for the purpose described.
2. A pipe bendin device comprising a. body portion, spaced laterally disposed jaws fixed to said body portion, brackets pivotally mounted upon opposite sides of the body portion and having means for clamping themselves to a support.
3. A pipe bending device comprising a body portion having spaced arcuately shaped jaws integrally formed therewith, a bracket pivotally fixed to one side of each jaw, and adjustable means whereby the device may be clamped to supports of varying widths.
4;. A pipe bending device comprising a body portion having formed integral therewith and upon one side thereof spaced arcuately shaped concaved jaws, an ear upon either side of the body portion outwardly of the jaws, and supporting brackets pivotally mounted upon the ears.
5. A portable pipe bending device comprising a body portion having formed integral therewith and upon one side thereof spaced arcuately shaped concaved jaws, an ear upon one side of the body portion outwardly of a jaw, a supporting bracket pivotally mounted upon theear, said bracket being reversible and provided with means for engagement with a piece of pipe as an operating handle.
