This invention relates ,to railway car trucks.
In truck design for railway cars, it is desirable to provide as sturdy and compact a structure as possible without sacrificing riding comfort and stability. Furthermore, the bending moments in the supporting parts must be kept low and at the same time proper clearance of the parts maintained..
One object of the invention is to provide a railway car truck construction wherein the transom is indirectly supported by the side frames.
Another objectis to provide an arrange ment wherein the resilient mountings within the side frame are spaced a maximum dis tance apart consistent with a minimum width of side frame bolster opening.
A further object is to provide a lateral motion truck of minimum number-of parts so constructed that the various parts thereof result in a reduction of the bending moments on the side frames and the bending. action on the transom.
Another object is to provide a sturdy, efficient and inexpensive truck assembly which fulfills various requirements under operative conditions.
These and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement. disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which-.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck embodying my invention- ,Figure 2 is a top plan view of aside frame forming a part of said truck;
Figure 3 is'a fragmentary top plan view, parts being in section,,showing particularly the transom, bolster and side frame arrangement; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken in the plane of line 4-4 in Figure 3.
The various novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly ointed out in the appended claims.
Re erring to the figures of the drawings,
it will be noted that the truck includes side frames 10 (only one of which is shown), which, as illustrated, are integrally formed and include a compression member 11, tension member 12,.column guides 13 and-"journal boxes 14. Coil-springs. 15 are mounted on the tension member 12, intermediate-the column guides 13 and immediately adjacent thereto, providing a relatively large, free space through which elliptic springs 16,'to be referred to later, may extend. 'In this particular instance there are two coil-springs adj acenteach of the column guides 13, wherein a maximum distance is-provided between the springs longitudinally of the side framesconsistent with a minimum width of the bolster opening 17-.
Extending between the side frames and extending intothe bolster openings 17 and "mounted upon the coil springs 15 is a transom 18, being of open rectangular shape and including side members 19 and connecting yoke members 20. .The yokemembers 20 are provided with channelportions 21 for recep- 1 tion of the bolster columns 13', it being under stood that the transom is free to move vertically in accordance with load conditions and the reaction of the springs. 1
The transom 18. n this instance, near each of its ends and adjacent the side frames 10, is provided with a saddle 22, which includes integrally formed, vertically depending side arms 23, which. extend from the transommembers 19, and which arms are connected by the cross member 24. A nest of elliptic springs 16 at each side of the truck is mounted upon. the saddle 22 in a manner whereby said elliptic springs extend outwardly between the coil-springs 15. In thereby spacing the nests" of elliptic springs 16 as far apartas possible, consistent with the general arrangement, there results a reduction in theibending action on the transom, which, on account of clearance conditions, is not particularly well adapted to carry heavy loads; also by spacing the coil-springs 15 a maximum distance apart longitudinally of the side frames,'there is a reduction of the bending moment on the side frames. I

By means of this arrangement, a load is transferred from the bolster through the elliptic springs .16, transom 1'8 and coll-springs 15, to the side frames "10, and the parts are so arranged relatively to each other to cooperate in a manner to produce the "best results consistent with the general design in question.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the followingclaims.
I claim: I
l. a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames, a transom supported by said side frames, resilient means mounted onsaidtransom, and a movably mounted bolstersupported by said .resili ent means, said resilient means including transversely tending elliptical springs.
2. In a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames, a transom supported-by said side frames, resilient means mounted on said transom, 2a movably mounted bolster supported by said resilient means, and means for guiding said bolster in its movements, said means permitting limited transverse movement of said bolster.
3. Ina railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames, :1 trausom supported bysaid side frames and having-depending saddle ortions-resilient means mounted on said saddle portions, and movably mounted bolster supported by said resilient means, said resilient means including transversely extending elliptical springs.
4. .Ina railwaycar truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames, :1 transom supported by said side frames and having depending saddle "portions, resilient means mounted on said saddle portions, '11 movably mounted bolster supported by said resilient means, and means for guiding said bolster .in its movements,said"means permitting limited transverse :movement of said bolster.
5. In a railway car .truck,the combination ofoppositelyarranged side frames, :1 transom supported by said side frames and having-depending saddle portions arranged adjacent said side frames, springs carried by said saddle portions, a bolster, and a roller connection between said bolster and said springs for permitting lateral movement of the, bolster wvitli' respect to the said side frames.

In a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames, springs carried by said side frames, a transom mounted upon said springs and having integrally formed saddle portions, springs mounted on said saddle portions, caps mounted on said transom springs, a bolster having a roller connection with said caps for permitting lateral movement of said bolster with respect to said side frames, said transom having guideways with which said spring caps co-operate for guiding the vertical movements of said bolster.
14. In a railway car truck, the combination of opposite arranged side frames, springs carried by said side frames, atransom mounted upon said springs and having integrally formed saddle portions, springs mounted on said saddle portions, caps mounted on said transom springs, a bolster having a roller connection with said caps for permitting lat- 1 eral movement of said bolster with respect to said side frames, said transom having guideways with which said spring caps co-operate for guiding the vertical movements of said bolster, said bolster having elongated openings into which said spring caps extend, whereby said bolster may freely move laterally with respect to said side frames.
15. In a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames having bolster openings, an open rectangular transom extending between said side frames and into said bolster openings, springs carriedby said side frames and supporting said transom, springs mounted on said transom, a bolster supported by said transom springs, and means for permitting vertical and lateral movements of said bolster relatively to said side frames.
16. In a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames havtransom extending between said side frames and into said bolster openings, and having integrally formed depending saddle portions, springs carried by said side frames and supporting said transom, springs mounted on said transom saddle portions, a bolster supported by said transom springs, and means for permitting vertical and lateral movements of said bolster relatively to said transom. v
17. In a railway car truck, the combination of oppositely arranged side frames having column guides forming bolster openings,
springs located directly adjacent said column guides leaving an opening between said springs, a transom supported by said springs, elliptic springs mounted on said transom and extending into the opening formed between said other springs, and a bolster supported on said elliptic springs.
