Description

wi h nmr n smrns PATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON w. GOTTINGHAM, 0F nooxroan 'rnxAs, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES P. GOTTINGHAM, 0F SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN monme APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,200, dated February 29, 1876; application filed August 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GIDEON W. COTTING- HAM, of Bockport, in the county of Aransas panying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement uponthe Letters Patent No. 144,743, for ironing-machine, granted to me November 18, 1873; and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the reciprocating table with end standards or supports, and ironingboard placed therein in the means for holding the iron down on the clothes; and in the combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line .00 m of Fig. 1.'
A represents a suitable stand or frame-work.
for containing and supporting the various parts of the machine. In the upper part of the frame A is a center shaft, a, and two end shafts, b 1), running parallel with each other and across the frame. These shafts are all provided with wheels d d, upon which the table or carriage B is supported and moves back and forth. The center shaft to has, in addition thereto, two drums, O (3, around which the cords or chains 0 e are passed, the ends of the same being attached to the ends of the carriage, so that by rotating the shaft or in either direction said carriage will move in the same direction. The table or carriage B is. constructed of suitable side rails connected by curved end pieces and having a'concave bottom, as shown. In the center at each end of the carriage B, is a standard, D, having a flat upper surface with a short pin, 13, extending upward from the center thereof. These standards form supports for the ironing-board resents the iron which is attached to the front ends of arms H H, which are pivoted, to a standard, I, projecting upward from the rear side of the frame A. The rear ends of the arms H are connected together by a round or cross bar, and from the same a bar, J, connects with the rear end of a lever, K, pivoted in the back part of the frame. of this lever is, by a rod, f, connected with a treadle, L, which is pivoted in the lower rear part of the frame, and extends forward under the front side thereof. A cord or chain,
h, passes from near the front end of the treadle over a loose pulley, m, on the shaft to, and has a weight, M, attached to its other end to counterbalance the weight of the iron G. By pressing down on the treadle I the arms H are turned so as to bring the iron G. down on the board E, and the pressure of said iron can be easily regulated by the pressure of the foot on the treadle. As soon as the pressure is removed from the treadle the counterbalancingweight M raises the iron from the board.
The table or carria geB is operated by the following means: On the rear end of the shaft or is a cog-wheel, N, and gearing with an idle cogwheel, 0, above it, and this wheel gears with a similar wheel, P, on the rear end of a shaft, n, which has its bearings in the top of the standard I, and extends forward over the machine, and has a crank, R, at its front end.-
The operator, standing at the front side of the machine, can thus easily manipulate both the crank and treadle.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an ironing-machine, an elevated ironing-board, E, in combination with the re- The front end ciprooat-ingcarriage 3,; with open space between:theironing board and carriageanid the end supports D, and a vertioally-adjustable iron, G, and mechanism to reciprocate.
the table, whereby one person can reciprocate the carriagea-nd turn rgoocle being ironeriiup on the board; substantially-as-andforithepnr i pose herein specified.
2. The combination of the reciprocating ta ble or carriage B, endisupportsrl) D, with,- I pins'i 27, and the ironing=board-E; substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. fD-hee counterbala-ncinig weight incom hinationgwith- IhB-liltfifldly. L, connectionsf K J ,armsH, and iron G, substantially as and forrthepurposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my-0W1 Laffix; my signature. in; presenceof "two-wltnessesr GIDEON'WESLEY'OOTTINGHAM.
