Description
Snom/tot S. J. HAIGNEY PACKAGE 0R CONTAINER FOR LIQUIDS Dec. 3l, 1929.
Filed Oct. 5. 192s Patented Dec. 31, 1929 SUSAN HAGNEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK PACKAGE OR CONTAINER FOR LIQUIDS Application filed October 5, 1926. Serial No. 139,598.
This invention relates to packages or containers, and more particularly to containers for liquid, and has as an object to provide a container which shall prevent leakage of the liquid contents whenthe container is closed, but which shall provide a convenient means for applying the liquid contents when the container is opened.
@ther objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
lA preferred embodiment ot the invention selected for purposes of illustration is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a section on the line .2l-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the fluid container.
Referring to the drawings, the package s comprises an outer casing 1 and an inner liquid container 2. The outer casingwhich may be of wood or metal may be conveniently divided into two sections 8 and a which may be secured together either fric- The top section 3 oi the casing may be provided With a cavity 6 into which is fitted a cap 7 of rubber or other suitable material which in turn is provided with a cavity 8 3U which is adapted to receive the reduced end portion 9 ot the liquid container 2. Preferably the reduced end portion may be corrugated or threaded in the manner illustrated in order to provide a reasonably tight trictional engagement between the surface or" the reduced end portion and the surface of the cavity 8. Such engagement is desirable :tor two reasons, first, to prevent leak- A age of the liquid contents from the contain- 0 er 2 and, second, to hold the container 2 to the top section 3 without the provision of any other supporting means. As will be observed, the bottom section 4 of the casing merely surrounds the liquid container to prevent damage thereto, but does not serve to support the liquid container.
The reduced end portion 9 of the liquid container is provided with a relatively small duct 10 through which the liquid contents may be ejected from the container, but preftionally or by means of the screw thread 5.-
Vused as a dropper.
erably this passage is of a size to prevent the escape of liquid except as desired by the user. As will be understood, liquid may be ejected by shaking the container, or in cases where it is desired to use the end portion 9 as an applicator, surface tension may be suliicient to cause the desired flow of liquid through the passage 10.
Preferably,`however, means are provided by which the liquid may be ejected from the container, such means being illustrated in the preferred embodiment as comprisin a iexible cap 11 of rubber or other suita le material which is mounted over the open end 12 of the container. In many cases it has been found desirable to line the interior of the rubber cap with a sheet 18 of collo- Y dion for example, for many of the liquids which the package is adapted to contain have a deleterious effect on rubber. As will be observed by pressing on the rubber cap, the contained liquid may be ejected as desired.
The described package may beV conveniently carried by the user in a pocket or in 7 a hand-bag for example, Without danger of leakage of the liquid contents and without danger of breakage, due to the resilient manner in which the liquid container is supported in the rubber cap 7. It desired, the liquid container may be used as an applicator or by pressing'on the rubber cap 11 may be When the reduced end portion of the liquid container is inserted in the rubber cap the container is tightly sealed and at the same time the rubber cap provides a resilient support which serves to protect the liquid container from damage due to shock, as for example, if the package is dropped. Furthermore, even when removed from the outer casing, the liquid container may be laid on its side or may be held in upright position without leakage.
It will be 'understood that the invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim as my invention:
l. A package for liquids, comprising, a liquid container having a duct in one end, an outside casing for said container having a cap, and resilient means having a cavity therein mounted in said cap, the cavity in the resilient means closely and removably engaging the duct end of said liquid container to resiliently support said liquid container Within said easing and seal said duct.
2. A package for liquids, comprising, a liquid container/having a reduced .end .portion having a duct therein, an outside `Casing for said container' having va hap., and resilient means having a cavity therein mounted in.
said cap, the cavity in 'the resilient means closely and removably engaging the reduced end portion of saidili'quid .container .to .resiliently support said liquid container by said 'reduced Aendl portion Within said 'easing 4and sealsaid duet.
V3. A package Vfor liquids, comprising, a lliql-uid `container having agredueedkend Jportion having a Aduet therein, said container being .provided with a diaphragm forming a aflexible \va`ll\tl1e1'e0,and anfoutside easing having means to seal saidwduetand Ito supportsaid lcontainer land fto :prot-ect Ysaid' flexible '-Wall aga-inst pressure.
4.
