This invention relates to a convertible article of furniture, more particularly to a combined chair and bed.

The principal object of this invention is to ,5 provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth,

an article of furniture adapted to be used normally as a chair, but which may be readily converted into a bed when desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of the class above mentioned which is simple in construction, durable, attractive in appearance, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown an embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates generally the frame of the chair, comprising a vertical portion 2 and a horizontal portion 3, respectively provided with a back 4 and seat 5, both of the upholstery type. secured to the side edge of the horizontal portion 3, adjacent the forward edge of the latter, the other end of the yoke being fixedly secured to the side edge of the vertical portion 2. Supported on each yoke is a chair arm indicated generally by the numeral 9, and comprises an inner frame portion 10, and

an outer frame portion 11. The portion 11 is provided with a cushion 12, similar in type to the back 4 and seat 5. The portion 10 of the arm 9 is rectangular in form and the side members 13 thereof are pivoted to the yoke 8, as clearly shown in Figure 6. The side members 14 of the frame portion 11 are of substantially greater width than the side members 13 of the frame portion 10, and are formed with slots 15 at their inner edges to receive the frame portions 10 therein.

The frame portion 11 is freely slidable on the frame portion 10, and is prevented from being accidentally removed therefrom by means of a chain 16, one end of which is secured to the yoke 8 and the other end of which is secured to the frame portion 11. The bottom member 17 of the frame portion 11 has pivoted thereto a leg 18 to support the arm when the latter is disposed in a horizontal position. The bottom member '17 is formed with a groove 19, to receive the leg 18 therein when the arm is in folded or vertical posit-ion.

Extending lengthwise of the side members 14 of the frame portion 11 and projecting inwardly therefrom in opposed relation, is a pair of guides 20, the inner edges of which are downturned and returned to form grooves 21. Secured to the inner faces of the side members 13 of the frame portion 10 is a pair of angular guide members 22, the free edge portions of which are slidable within the 90 grooves 20.

Secured to the rearwardly disposed side member 13 of each of the frame portions 10 is an angular bracket 23, having a curved edge 24, formed with a pair of spaced notches 95 25 and 26 respectively. Projecting inwardly from the rear legs 6, and spaced from the bottoms thereof is a pair of oppositely disposed horizontally extending rods 27, the rear ends 28 of which are offset rearwardly at 100 of the frame 1 is a coiled spring 30. The

spring 30 normally bears against the rearward face of the side portion 1.3 to maintain the arm 9 in forward position on the yoke 8. With the arm 9 in forward position on the yoke 8, the curved edge 24 of the bracket 23 is in alignment with the end portion 28 of the rod 27, in order that the portion 28 may be readily engaged by the notch 26. When a rearward pressure is exerted on the arm 9 the bracket 23 is moved beyond the end of the end portion 28 of the rod 27, which disengagesthe bracket 23 to permit the arm 9 tobe swung to a horizontal position.

Extending transversely across the slot 29, adjacent the top thereof, is a rod 31, for engagement with the notch 26 in the bracket 23 for supporting the arm 9 in horizontal po sition. Spaced below the rod 31, the vertical frame portion 2 is provided with a transverse bore 32, which extends entirely through the vertical frame portion 2, in parallel relation to the rod 31. Adjacent the groove 32, the back 4 is recessed as at 33 to provide a seat for a handle member 34. The handle member 34 is pivoted to a pin 35 which extends partially through the bore .32 into the slot 29. By moving the handle member 34 to a.horizontal position, the pin 35 may be pushed farther into the groove 32 to extend entirely across the slot- 29. In this position, the pin 35 engages the notch 25 in the bracket 23, when the arm 9 is lowered to an angle of substantially 45.

A shelf 36 is supported between the side members of the frame portion3, to provide a seat for a pair of auxiliary cushions 37. When the arms 9 are supported in horizontal position and the portions 11 thereof extended relative to the portions 10, as illustrated in Figure 5, the cushions 37 are interposed between the cushions 12 and seat 5, in which position the cushions 37 are supported on the frame portions 10.

The cushions 12 are formed with beveled rearward edges 38, to permit the arms 9 to be actuated rearwardly on the yokes 8 to disengage the brackets 23 from the end portions 28 of the rods 27. When the arms 9 are moved from a vertical to a horizontal position,the brackets-23 swing in an arc and the rods 31 are automatically engaged by the notches 26. As the arms 9 are lowered, the legs 18 swing about their pivots to a vertical. position for supporting the portions 11 of the arms 9 adjacent the outer rear corners of the arms.

It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the ap pended claims.

What I claim is:

1. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, aseat,a pair of extendible side arms formed of two sections, means connected to the back and seat for pivotally connecting the arms thereto, said arms being slidably mounted on said means, controlling springs for said arms carried by said means, means for latching the arms in extended and nonextended positions to the back, and means carried by the arms for supporting the latter when extended.

2, A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms formed of two sections, means connected to the back and seat for pivotally connecting the arms thereto, said'arms being slidably mounted on said means, controlling springs for said arms'carried by said means, means for latching the arms in extended and non-extended positions to the back, and means carried by the arms for supporting the latter when extended, said arm sections being movable relative to each other.

3. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms formed of two sections, means connected to the back and seat for pivotally connecting the arms thereto, said arms being slidably mounted on said means, controlling springs for said arms carried by said means, means for latching the arms in extended and non-extended positions to the back, means carried by the arms for supporting the latter when extended, one of said side arm sections being slidable on the other, and means for limiting the sliding movement therebetween.

4. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms each including an inner and an outer section, the outer section being shiftable on the innersection,means forlimitingtheshiftingof the outer section relative to the inner section, means for pivotallyconnecting the inner section to said back and seat, means carried by the outer section for supporting the arms when extended, and said inner section and back having coacting means for latching the arms when in extended and non-extended positions.

5. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms each including an inner and an outer section, the outer section being shiftable on the inner section, means for limiting the shifting of the outer section relative to the inner section, means for pivotally connecting the inner section to said back and seat, means carried by the outer section for supporting the arms When extended, and said inner section and back having coacting means for latching the arms when in extended and non-extended positions, said coacting means including an angular, notched bracket carried by said inner section.

6. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms each including an inner and an outer section, the outer section being shiftable on the inner section, means for limiting the shifting of the outer section relative to the inner section, means for pivotally connecting the inner section to said back and seat, means carried by the outer section for supporting the arms when extended, said inner section and back having coacting means for latching the arms when in extended and non-extended positions, said coacting means including an angular, notched bracket carried by said inner section, and a plurality of spaced rods secured to said back.

7. A convertible article of furniture comprising, a back, a seat, a pair of extendible side arms each including an inner and an outer section, the outer section being shiftable on the inner section, means for limiting the shifting of the outer section relative to the inner section, means for pivotally connecting the inner section to said back and seat, means carried by the outer section for supporting the arms when extended, automatically operable means for latching the arms in extended and non-extended positions, and manually operable means for latching said arms in partially extended position.
