FLUID PRES SURE MOTOR Filed D60 17, 1923 Patented Dec. 24, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELMER G. GARTIN, OF GLAREMONT, NEW
HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO SULLIVAN MA- FLUID-PRESSURE MOTOR Application filed December 17, 1923. Serial N'o. 681,146.
My invention relates to fluid pressure motors.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved pressure fluid motor. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved percussive motor having an improved valve mechanism. Still another object of my in vention is to provide an improved pressure fluid percussive motor especially adapted for rock drilling purposes provided with an improved valve mechanism of the multiple spool type having an improved guiding means, lubricating means, and bufler venting means therefor, and arrangement of parts thereof. These and other objects and advantages of my invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form -which my invention may assume in practice.
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal vertical sectional view of a drilling motor in which an illustrative form of my invention is incorporated, the view being partially in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with parts assumed in different positions.
Figs. 3 and 1 are detail end elevation views of a portion of my improved mechanism.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the locking member. 1
In this illustrative form of my invention, I have shown a pressure fluid percussive motor of the valved type generally designated 1, which comprises a cylinder 2 having a bore 3 in which a piston 4 is reciprocable. The piston l is provided with a projecting striking bar 5 adapted to percussivelyactuate a drill steel (not shown) suit-ably carried by the front end of the drilling motor in a well known manner. The opposite ends of the bore of the cylinder 2 are closed by head members 6 and 7 suitablyheld in the desired assembled relation by means of side rods (not shown) in the usual manner.
Pressure fluid is distributed alternately to the ends ofthe cylinder-by means of passages 8 and 9, the supply and exhaust of pressure fluid through the distribution passages 8, 9 being controlled by a valve mechanism of improved construction, generally designated 10. This valve mechanism comprises a casing or chest 11 in which suitable valve bushings 12 are so arranged as to form a chamber having end portions 13 of slightly smaller diameter than its central portion 14. Herein, the passages 8, 9 communicate with the valve chamber adjacent the ends of the enlarged central bore 1 1, terminating in annular grooves 15 and 16. Adjacent the extremities of the smaller bores 13, ports 17 and 18 connect throwing or reverse passages 19 and 20 with the valve chamber, these passages at their opposite ends communicating with the bore of the cylinder 2 by longitudinally spaced ports 21 and 22. Intermediate the port 17 and groove 15 and port 18 and groove 16, respec tively, in the valve chest there are formed annular grooves 23 and 2 1, which grooves communicate by ports 25 and 26 with an exhaust passage 27 formed in a boxlike member 28 suitably secured to the top of the valve chest. As illustrated, a valve, generally designated 29, is arranged within the valve chest and is herein of the three spool type and comprises recessed end spools or heads 30 fitting the bores 13 and a central spool portion 31 of slightly larger diameter fitting the bore 1 1-, the heads 30, 31 being connected by reduced portions 32. Herein, it will be observed that 'the outer ends of the bores 13 are closed by buffer members or plugs 33 and 3a, with which the recessed ends of the valve are adapted to engage, which are held in the desired rigid assembled relation by means of flattened surfaces 33 and 3 1 engaging a corresponding flattened surface on the cylinder 2 and a centrally disposed longitudinally extending bolt 35 provided with a head 36. The head 36 is provided with flattened portions 37 which are adapted to engage the sides of a slot or groove 38 in the valve bufler 33 thereby holding the buflers and bolt in rigid non- IOtfitll'lg relation. This bolt 35 is provided with a'nut 39 which is held in the desired tightened position by means of a locking member 40 engaging the sides of a slot or groove 41 in the buffer plug 34. Herein, it will be lubricating said bolt including a spiral groove and ports in said valve communicable therewith.
4. In a pressure fluid motor, a cylinder, a piston reciprocable therein, means for effecting reciprocation of said piston including a valve chest, a valve therein having throwing areas on opposite ends thereof, buffers limiting movement of said valve, a center bolt extending through said valve for retaining said buffers in assembled relation, and means provided by said center bolt and controlled by said valve for alternately" venting said throwing areas on the ends of said valve.
5. In a pressure fluid motor, a cylinder, a piston reciprocable therein, means for effecting reciprocation of said piston including a valve chest, a valve therein, buffers limiting movement of said valve, a center bolt extending axially through said valve for retaining said buffers in assembled relation, and means provided by said center bolt comprising separatepassages alternately opened and closed by said valve for venting the space between the ends of said buflers and the ends of said valve to exhaust the total end areas on said valve.
6. In a pressure fluid motor, a cylinder, a piston reciprocable therein, means for effecting. reciprocation of said piston including a valve chest having a bore, a valve therein having recessed end portions, buifer plugs having portions projecting within the bore in said valve chest and with which the recessed portions of said valve alternately engage, a center bolt extending through said valve for retaining said buffer plugs in assembled relation, and means provided by said bolt and controlled by said valve for alternately venting the space between the proj ecting portions of said buffer plugs and the recessed portions of said valve and the space around said projecting portions.
l7. In a pressure fluid motor, a cylinder, a piston reciprocable therein, and means for effecting reciprocation of said piston including a valve chest, a valve therein, buffers limiting movement of said valve, means for retaining said buffers in assembled relation including a center bolt on which said valve slides, locking means therefor, means pro vided by said center bolt for alternately venting the space between the ends of said bufiers and the ends of said valve, and means provided by said bolt intermediate said vent means for lubricating the valve. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
