BLAKE-SLEE, OF COMPTON, CALIFORNIA ROTARY BAILER My invention relates to an improved form of rotary bailer for oil or other wells adapted to provide an efficientand durable means whereby the sand accumulated in such wells may be quickly and efiiciently removed therefrom.
It is an object of my invention to provide a driven member which has mounted thereon one or more devices whereby the sand accumulated in a well may be loosened, said driven member being also provided with means for receiving said sand, which'may be intermittently removed therefrom.
, A further object of my invention is to provide a driven member which has positioned therein a means whereby the sand in a well may be introduced therein.
Another object of my invention is to prom vide a driven member with a suction means for introducing the sand accumulated in a well into said driven member, means being provided on said driven member whereby said suction means maybe intermittently rendered operative and inoperative.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a rotatory bailer with a driven member in which a suction means is intermittently rendered operative or inoperative by means of a clutch, which clutch, however, may be omitted, if desired.
It is also an object of my invention to provide an improved form of rotary bailer comprising a driven member composed of a plurality of parts in which an inner casing .15 positioned in an outer casing, both of said casings being provided with means, 1n the shape of openings, whereby the sand in troduced into said driven member may be intermittently removed therefrom by means of a suitable collar associated with said driven member.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved form of rotary bailer in which a suction means having associated therewith a set of valves is used for introducing the sand in said driven member.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved form of rotary bailer which has a driving member for driving a driven member, said driving member having thereon a means which, when said driving member is reciprocated, will be rotated by the fluid in a well, said means, preferably, though not necessarily, taking the form of a series of blades positioned on said driving member.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved form of rotary bailer in which an operating member is adapted to be reciprocated whereby a driving member will be rotated by the fluid in a well, which driving member will function to drive a driven member whereby the sand accumulated in an oil or other well may be expeditiously re moved therefrom.
It is also an object of my invention to provide an improved form of rotary bailer in which an operating member is provided with a rotary element for permitting a driving member associated therewith to drive a driven member to loosen and remove the sand accumulated in a well, said operating member being provided with anti-friction means and a means for preventing injury to said bailer as it is operated. It is also within the province of my invention to provide said operating member with a means for operating the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel form of rotary bailer equipped with a sand loosening means, a sand receiving means, a sand introducing means, and a means for rendering all of said means operative whereby said sand may be intermittent- S5 1y removed from said sand receiving means.
More specifically, it is an object of my invention to provide a rotary bailer for removing the sand accumulated in a well, which bailer comprises a driven member composed 9 of an outer casing in sectional form and an inner casing mounted therein, both of said casings being equipped with means whereby said sand may be loosened, and also with means whereby said sand may be intermittently removed from said driven member. Said driven member may also be provided with a valved suction means, co-operating with another valve means, which suction means may be rotated with said outer casing or be reciprocated therein. Said driven member has also associated therewith a driving member and an operating member for rendering said driving member operative to drive said driven member.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a novel form of rotary bailer which is simple in form, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, durable, thoroughly efficient in operation, not easy to get out of'ord'er, and'composed of a minimum number of parts.

Describing my invention more in detail, 1 indicates the driving member of my rotary bailer, which may be constructed out of any suitable material, in the formshown, the ends of which may be solid and the intermediate portions hollow, andcylindrical, though this is not material. The ends of the; driving member 1 are provided with suitable, sockets, screw threadedfor the reception of the stem 9 of the operatingm'ember 11, the socket 1'? being adapted to receive the threaded stem 16 of the. driven member 2; any suitable means for removably, securing the members togethermay be substituted for the means shown.
Mounted on the driving member 1 is a series of spiral blades 4 which may be formed integral with said member or secured thereto in any preferred manner. The shape also of said blades or means whereby said driving member may be operated is immaterial. Said blades, when the driving member is reciprocated in an oil or other well, in the manner presently to be described, are adapted to cause said driving member to be rotated by the fluid in said well.
The operating member 11 for operating the driving member 1 comprises a suitable casing on which ismounted a preferably circular member 10, secured on said casing by means of the strips 7 by brazing or otherwise, said member functioning to prevent the blades 4 from being mutilated or broken by coming'into contact with the well casing. It is clear, however, that the particular form or the material of which'it is constructed is immaterial, so long as injury to. the apparatus may be prevented whenitv is operated in the well.
, Positioned invsaid operating member 11 is an upper member 8, which in practise may take any form desirable, and which has associated therewith and the. casing; an anti-.friction means 6 to prevent wear, as will be clear. Said anti-friction meansmay take any form found desirable. As a convenient. means for rendering said operating member operative, I have provided a bail 5. or other member adapted to be attachedto and reciprocated by the cable used in the well. 1 Of. course, any other means for reciprocating the member 11 may be substituted for that just. described;
The driven member 2 of my bailer comprises an outer casing constructed in sectional form, or may be made ofone. integral structure, a series of sand loosening devices 35 being formed integral therewith or secured thereto in any suitable manner, their shape being also immaterial. 'The purpose of these devices is to loosen the sand accumulated in the well, said devices functioningwhen the drive mnember 2 is rotated. If desired, additional devices for this purpose may beprovided. 7

to which may be secured, or it may be integral therewith, a spiral blade 3. If desired, said blade may be omitted or any other form of sand loosening means substituted therefor. The cross-bar 33 may be fastened tothe inner'casing 30by means of bolts-34 or otherwise.
As seen in Fig. 4, a-sc-rew-threaded collar 25 is secured to'th'e member 23 of the driven member 2, which collar is also secured to the, inner casing 30, the outer casing 24- being adapted to be rotated about said inner casing so. as t brin g the openings28-flfil 29 formed thereininto alignment,- so. that-ithe sand-in;
troduced into said driven member may be removed from time to time, the collar 25 being provided with a cut-away portion 26 to coact with a complementary cut-away portion 27 in the casing 24ito insure that said openings 28 and 29 shall be brought into alignment.
To provide a means whereby the sand may beintroduced into the driven member 2, I have provided a valve 31 of any preferred kind, hinged at 37 to a valve seat 32, which may be screwed as shown to the inner casing 30, or said valve seat may be screwed on to the outside of said casing. In the present instance the outer casing 24- has a shoulder against which the cross-bar 33 is adapted to press.
An upper casing 23, to which is removably secured by means of threads or otherwise, a skeleton frame 36, preferably though not necessarily, formed by cutting away portions of a cylindrical hollow piece of metal, is associated with the outer casing 2 1 in any preferred manner. Said frame 36 has secured thereon or formed integral therewith an upper clutch member 12, provided with at least two cut-away portions 18 to form a means into which the lower clutch member 13 is adapted to take. If desired, instead of connecting the skeleton frame to the casing 23 by means of threads a screw'threaded collar may be substituted therefor.
Mounted for reciprocation within the casing 23 is a plunger or suction means 19, provided with a suitable packing 20, providing for a fluid tight oint with the casing. Said plunger is either integral with-0r secured thereto in any preferred manner to a cylindrical or other member 15, to which is attached a screw threaded stem 16, adapted to coact with the socket 17 so that the driven member may be removed from the driving member at will.
In the form shown, the member is flattened to provide for the lower clutch member 13, said member 15 being also bifurated to form two half-round members 14-, provided with bent out portions 15, forming a convenient means whereby the plunger 19 may be bolted or otherwise secured to said members 14. It is clear that if desired the pluger 19 may be secured to the member 15 by any other means, or the lower member 13 of the clutch may be formed in a different manner, either integral with the member 15 or secured thereto in any preferred manner. It is also within the provice of my invention to omit said clutch entirely. A check valve 22 is positioned to control a passage through the plunger 19 to permit said plunger to be re- ('iruocated within the casing 23.
In operation, whenever a well has become sanded the operating member 11 is secured to the driving member 1 by screwing its stem 9 into the socket provided therefor in said driving member, which in turn is secured to the driven member 2 through the stem 16 and socket 17. The cable of the well being attached to the bail 5, said cable is reciprocated in the well, the openings 28 and 29 having been closed by means of a pair of tongs applied to the collar 25.
The driving member 1 is now raised until the clutch members 12 and 13 become e11- gaged, rendering the plunger 19 inoperative and permitting it to be rotated with the driven member 2. Reciprocating the cable in the well, causes the operating member 11 to be reciprocated, which in turn provides for a reciprocation of the member 1, the blades 4 of which, by said reciprocation, cause the fluid in the well to rotate the driving member 1, the upper member 8 being rotated in its anti-friction hearing.
The members or the bit or spiral blade 3, or both, dig into the sand in the well, loosening the same. The plunger 19 is then lowered in the casing 23, the clutch members being disengaged, the valve 22 opening by action of the fiuid in the well. Raising the cable lifts the plunger, the sand being sucked into the driven member 2 through the valve 31, which is opened by the suction thus created. The whole apparatus, filled with sand, is now removed from the well, and a pair of tongs applied to the collar 25, thus opening said driven member, the openings 28 and 29 being brought into alignment, and the sand removed. The operation is then repeated until the sand has been removed from the well.
While I have described my invention with great particularity, it is obvious that it may be modified throughout a wide range. I therefore do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, but reserve the right in practise to make any and all modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A rotary bailer including in combination, an operating member, a driving member connected to said operating member, a driven member connected to said driving member, means associated with said driven member for sucking sand therein, and fluid actuated means externally of said driving member whereby when said operating member is reciprocated the fluid in the well will cause said fluid actuated means to function to rotate said driven member.
2. In a rotary bailer, in combination, a hollow. driven member for receiving the sand accumulated in an oil or other well, means on said driven member for loosening said sand, means in said driven member for sucking said sand therein, a driving member separate and distinct from and connected to and adapted to rotate said driven member, fluid actuated means on said driving member whereby it may be rotated, and means associated with said driving member whereby it may be driven.

In arotary bailer, in combin'ation', an outer casing 'adapted'to be rotated, means positioned onfsa-id casing for looseningthe sand contained inan oil or otherwell, an inner casing associated with said outer casing, 'suctionmeans associated with. said casings Wherebysaid sand may be sucked therein, both of said casings being eqni ppedwith means wherebysaid sand may be removed therefrom hensaid bailer is removed from thewel hvand. means associated with said outer casing whereby. it may be rotated.
5; Ina rotary bailer, in combination an outer casing, an-i'nner casing positioned therein, means associated with both of'said cas= ings for loosening the sand accumulated in an oil or other Well, suction means associated with said outer casing for sucking said sand into said inner casing,- means for rendering said suction means operativeandlinoperative, botlrof said casings being equipped with means whereby said sand may be removed therefrom when said bailer is removed from the wellyand means associated With'said outer casing for rotating the same;

Ina 'rotary'ba-i ler, in combination, a driven member adapted to be'rotated, means associated with said driven member whereby the sand accumulated in anroil or other well maybe loosened, said driven member being providedwith m'cans i'or receiving said sand, reciprocating means associatedwith saiddriven member for sucking said sand in said driven :member, an inner'member positioned'in said driven membeiyboth of said members being' provided with means whereby said sand may be removed laterally therefrom when said bailer is removed from the Well, means'whereby said last mentioned means may be rendered operative, and fiuid actuated means for driving said driven member. In a rotary bailer, in combinati'on,a driven member for loosening the sand -ac=- cu'mi'l'lated in an oil or other Welland for receiving the same, means positioned in said driven member for sucking saicl -sand-the1ein, said driven member being provided withmeans whereby said'sand be-removed therefrom when said ba iler' is removed from the well, a driving member'associated with said driven member for driving the same, means on said driving member for driving said driven member, an operating member associated with said driving" member for causing said driving member to operate said driven member by the fluid in said well, said operating member comprising an element adapted to, be reciprocated, means positioned in said operating member adapted to be ro} tated when said element isrecipro'cated, and anti-friction means associatedwith said element and said reciprocating member.

In a rotary bailer, in combination, a driven member for loosening the sand accumulated in an oil or other well, and for receiving said sand, means positioned in said driven member for causingsaid sand to be sucked therein, saitl driven member being provided with means whereby said sand may be removed therefrom when said bai'ler' is removed from the well, a driving, member removably associated with said driven member, a series of blades on said clri'fv" 1g1me1'nber whereby it may be rotated to' drive said driven member, an operatingmember removably associated with said driving member for causing the fluid in said well; to render. said driving member operative, said operating member comprising an element adapted to be reciprocated, means on said element for 1 reciprocating said element, rotary means positioned in "saidioperating member for driving said driving member, anti-trio "on means associated with said element and said rotary means,- and means-onsaid operating external of said reciprocating means Whereby said sand loosening means is adapted to be rotated by the fluid in said Well.
