Description

(318-15 AU 291 E1 J. S IGWALT,J1-. HAND-STAMP.
No.174,017. Patented Feb. 22, 1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
.lUl-IN SIGVVALI, Jlt, OF CHICAGO, ILLlNOlS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [74,017, dated February 22, IoTll; application liled May 19, 1674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SIGWALT, Jr., of Chicago, Cook county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereol', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stamps as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pad-block, front end of the bed-piece, semi-spherical washer, and nut separated from each other. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of said parts as combined; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lower side of said stamp, showing the means employed for attaching thereto the wrench employed for adjusting said pad-piece.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to enable the ready adjustment of the pad-piece of a handsta-mp to any desired angle with reference to a horizontal line and it consists, principally, in the peculiar form of the bearings between the pad-piece, washer, and the bedpiece, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in the means employed for attaching to the lower side of the bed-piece the wrench used for adjusting the pad-piece to position, substantially as is hereinafter shown.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the bed-piece of my stamp, constructed with the usual form in plan view, and having pivoted upon its upper side, at its rear end, one end of a lever, B, said lever, at its opposite forward end, being provided with a suitable dieholder, 0, and ribbolrboxes D, and rendered capable of vertical oscillation, within certain limits, upon its pivotal bearing, all in the usual manner. Immediately beneath the forward end of the lever B is placed a circular padpiece, E, which is secured to or upon the bedpiece A by means of a bolt, 6, that is attached to, and extends downward from, the lower side and center of said pad'pieee, and, passing through a suitable opening, a, that is formed in said bed-piece, has upon its lower threaded end a nut, F. In order that the pad-piece E may be adjusted to the different angles rendered necessary by the varying thicknesses of papers *1 be stamped, and, at the same time, may maintain a firm bearing, its lower side, around the upper end fliof the bolt 6, is provided with a semi-spherical recess, a, and upon the bed-piece, immediately beneath, is formed a correspond 1 1g semispherical boss or seat, a, upon which said recess is caused to bear. Upon the lower side of the bcd'piece A, immediately beneath the boss a, is provided a semi-spherical recess, a", which receives a washer, G, that, upon its upper side, corresponds to, and fills, the same, and at its lower side is plain, so as to furnish a bearing for the nut F.
As thus arranged, it will be seen that the pad-piece may be tilted in either direction until its edge touches the upper surface of the bed-piece, without lessening its bearing upon the boss (0; and that the washer G, following the inclination of the bolt 0, will have an equally firm bearing within the recess a, while, as the nut F, washer G, and bolt e maintain the same relative angle, said nut will, at all times, have a square bearing against which to be screwed.
To change the angle of the padpiece, it is only necessary that the nut should be loosened until the former can be moved. After adjustment said nut should be again tightened until said pad-piece is firmly :cured in place.
As the'pad'piece requires frequent adjustment, it is necessary that a suitable wrench, H, should be provided for the manipulation of the nut; and, in order that said wrench may be secured against misplacemcnt or loss, I provide, within the concave lower side of the base-plate A, two lugs, A and A, which have such size and relative position as to engage, respectively, with the nutopenlng h at one end of said wrench, and a small recess, h, that is formed within the opposite end or handle of the same, by which means the lateral position of said wrench is insured. A cen ralelongated opening, h, within the wrenc H, permits it to be passed overa turn-button, I, that is pivoted upon the base-plate A, which button, when said wrench is in position, may be turned at a right angle to its openmg, so as to prevent the removal of the same. The
wrench, thus stored. is always in place, can be attached and replaced in it moments time, is not in the way, and occupies no space thztt would be available for other purposes.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is .1. In combination with the lied-piece A, provided with the opening a, semispherieul boss at, and semi-spherical recess a, thepztd-pieee E, having the bolt 0 and semi-spherical recess 6, the Washer G, nmde seini-spherie-(tl upon its upper side, and the nut 1*, fitted to or upon said bolt, substmitially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the lied-piece A, provided with the lugs A and A and turnlxutton I, the wrench II, provided with the nut opening h, noteh h, nndelongsted central opening h, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of April, 1874.
FRANK CARPENTER, Units. SIGWALT.
