Description

Dec. 17, 1929. F. c. MARSHALL 1,740,108
VALVE MECHANISM Filed Ap 1927 NVENTO A T0RNEy Patented Dec. 17, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE winners 0. MARsnALn, or measly, Wisconsin, assieivo'n To "0. A. 'Liiwron 00., or DE PERE, WISCONSIN mm; ivrEcHANIsin Application filed April 4, 1927. Serial no. water The invention relatesto air compressors, and more particularly to valve mechanism therefor. v e V V v V a It is the desideratum in the construction and operation of. air compressors to employ valves for the control of air throughthe ports of the compressor which will operate quickly, reliably and as noiselesjsly as possible, and which will permit of the passage of as large volumes of'air as possible; and particularly to provide a valve construction for compressors operative without the useof springs to close the valves and which are not in any wise secured or connected to their seats but are loosely contained so that they inay operate without restraint.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of valve mechanism for compressors or other apparatuses, wherein the valves are of light weight and loosely contained, whereby the machine may be efficiently and sucessfully operated at high speed, without liability of overheating of the said machine. I k
Another object of the invention isthe pro vision of valve mechanism of the character stated, wherein the same is freely accessible,
and possesses maximum port area, and a minimum amount of movement, thus producing a' valve which will be durable, noiseless and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and in initial installation cost and for operating.
A further object of the invention is the provision bf valve mechanism of this character, which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, strong, durable, and which may be readily examined and removed from the machine.
anodifications may be resorted to as come properly within the scope of the annexed claims, without departing from the spiritof the invention or sacrificing any of its advang In the accompanying drawings y Figure l, is a vertical central sectionalview through a portion of an air compressor, showing the valve mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention, a y
Figure. 2, is a planview of the upper end or headof the compressor, showing bydctted lines theports andpassages for theinletand outlet fluid to and from the said compressor.
Figure 3, is a view similarto Figure 1,taken at substantially right angles thereto with the valves in altered positions. U
Similar referencecharacters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings. H c
To accomplish the purposes of this invention, there has been shown in the accompanymg drawings, in its present embodiment, a suitable air compressor cylinder A, within which is a reciprocating piston B, and upon the upper end of the cylinderA, i s secured a suitable cylinder he ad 10, pref erably in the form of a disk, retained in suspended relation to the cylinder A, by a centering stem 11, passed centrally through anouter dome or closure head 12, for said cylinder, the head stem 11, being extended through the latter andhas engaged thereon a crownnut 13, which is tapped thereon and is seated against a central boss 13; formed, on the dome or head 12. The dome or head 12, is constructed to be airor water cooled in any desirable manner, and is removably' fastened in position on the upper end of thecylinder A, through the medium of a series of bolts 14, marginally engaged therein. 7
Formed in the wall of the cylinder A, at diametrically opposite points thereof are inlet and outlet ports 15 and 16, respectively, the'port 15, being provided with an upwardly directed passage 17 and likewise the port 16, has an upwardly directed pa'ssage'lS, and these passages open intoways 19, and, 20, respectively, formed in'the dome or head 12, which latter being also formed with, inlet and exhaust chambers, or recesses 21 and 22, respectively. The chambers or recesses 21 and controlled in the opening and closing ofthe same, through the medium of a flat relatively thin ring-like valve 29, floatingly held be tween the head 10, and the "seatso,-counter sunk in the face adjacent thereto of the dome or head 12. I v
The head 10, has formed therein a series of spaced outlet openings 31, concentrically thereof, whichlatter communicate with the chamber or recess 22, in the dome or head 12. Surrounding the stem 11, is a retainer sleeve 32, which rests upon a central boss 33, on the head 10, and is formed with a flared enlarged lower end 34, spaced from and confronting a flat relatively thin ring-likevalve 35, concentrically of the boss 33, andadapted to engage a seat 36, on the head 10, under the action of a coiled spring 3?, of the expansion type, to close the openings 31, the spring 37, being about the hoss 33, and conlined by the fiared'end 34, of the sleeve 32. This sleeve 32, has between it and the dome or head 12, a lock washer 38, surrounding the stem 11, and active thereon to compress a gasket 39, between the boss 13, and the crown nut 13, so as to renderthe dome 'or head 12,leak-proof around'the stem 11,passed therethrough. I
By thus forming and arranging the parts as hereinbefore described, there is provided a free portage for the air and the valves have but little lift and are practically noiseless in operation. The structure is also adapted to be operated at high speeds without impairing the efliciency of the compressor, which not infrequently occurs in air-compressors of this character owing to the valves fluttering or failing to close properly at high speeds.
Arranged in suitable manner and in a pocket formed in the inner head 10, at the required points, is a coiled expansible lifting spring 40, which is adapted to work against the ring-like valve 29, for the positive closing of the inlet openings28, opening through the seat 30, for said valve.
- The lock washer 38, surrounding the stem 11, serves to hold theretainer sleeve 32, down against boss 33, and thecompressionof the gasket 39, is accomplished by the fact that the head 10, is drawn up tight against seat 41 for the dividingwalls 24, inthe dome or head 12, soas to prevent 'air leakage, as will be obvious. I I p It w ll be apparent that the dome or head 12, is reversible on the cylinder A, so as to enable the changing the inlet and exhaust from either side of the compressor, at the election of the user thereof.
There has been no attempt to illustrate or describe certain modifications in structural details which may be contemplated, and which might be desirable under certain conditions, as it is believed the disclosure made herein will enable those skilledin the art towhich the invention pertains to embody or adoptthe same as circumstances may dictate.
What isclaimed is:
1. In a structure of the character described, the"combinationwith a cylinder, of a fluid cooled dome on the cylinder and having concentrically disposedinl'et and exhaust chambers, a disk like head confronting the bore of the cylinder andhaving a center stem removably inserted centrally through the dome, means engaging the stem outside of the dome to fasten the head therewith, said head being constructed to form a continuous peripheral inlet from the inlet chamber to the cylinder, said head further being formed with ex haust ports communicating with the exhaust chamber, ring like valves intercepting the in let and exhaust ways, and means normally holding the valves in closed positions. 7
2. In a structure of the character described, the combinationwith a cylinder, of a fluid cooled dome on the cylinder and having con.-' centrically disposed inlet and exhaust chambers, a disk like head confronting the bore of the cylinder and having a center stem removably inserted centrally. through the dome, means engaging the stem outside of the dome to fasten the head therewith, said head being constructed and arranged to effect a continuous peripheral inlet from the inlet chamber to the cylinder, said head further being formed with exhaust. ports communicating with the exhaust chamber, 'ring-like valves intercepting the inlet and exhaust chambers,
means normally holding the valves in closed positions, and a retaining sleeve onthe stem and overhanging the valve for the exhaust way.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANCIS C. MARSHALL.
