PELPHREY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA; A. W. PELIPHREY ADMINISTRATOR 0F SAID JESSE. W, PELPI-IREY, DECEASED DEODORIZER Application filed January 11, 1927. Serial No. 160,504.
This invention aims to provide a simple means for doing away with objectionable odors which proceed from rendering tanks in establishments which handle fish cleanings, and under similar circumstances.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings 1 Figure 1 shows in elevation, one way in which the invention may be installed;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the device per se, parts being broken away;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating an installation which difiers from the one depicted in Figure 1.
In carrying out the invention as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, there is provided a casing 1 including a box-like body 2 having a reduced lower end 3, oppositely disposed glass inspection plates 4 being mounted at 5 on opposite sides of the body 2 of the casing 1. The casing 1 is surmounted by a lid 6 which is held in place by securing elements 7. An inlet pipe 8 enters one side of the body 2 of the casing 1, through a packing gland 9. To the inner end of the pipe 8 is connected the casing 10 of a valve,.the valve casing having an outlet 11 which discharges downwardly, at right angles to the pipe 8. The stem of the valve is marked by the numeral 12 and passes outwardly through a packing gland 14 on the body 2 of the casing 1. The inner end of the valve stem 12 enters the casing 10. On the outer end of the wheel 15. 7
In practical operation, steam from a rendering tank or the like, laden with objectionable odors, enters through the pipe 8 and is discharged downwardly through the outlet 11, under the governance of the valve that is operated by the stem 12 and the wheel 15. Water is discharged in liberal quantities through the pipe 20 and since the plates 16 converge, the water is held back enough, so that there is always some water flowing downwardly around the discharge end 11 of the casing 10. The steam is condensed, and the water absorbs the odor in the steam, the water flowing away through the pipe 21.
. The device may be used in a wide variety of ways. Thus, as shown in Figure 1, the pipes 21 may be connected to a header 22 which, in its turn, is connected at 23 to a deodorizer 24 having an outlet 25, the steam supply pipe for the deodoriz'er 24 being marked by the numeral 26, and there being a hand valve 27 in the pipe 26. If the deodorizer shown at 24 is used, a second deodorizing takes place, and the most retractory materials, so' far as odor is concerned, are taken care of adequately, and as the product leaves by way of the pipe 25, there is no appreciable odor. The deodorizer shown. at 24 is not described in detail because it may be constructed by the device shown in the copending application of Jesse W. Pelphrey, filed May 8, 1924, Ser. No. 711,922, which has matured into Patent 1,710,590 of April 23, 1929.
The water pipes 20 are connected to a cross stem 12 there is a hand pipe 28 that is joined to a main 29, there being valves 80 in the cross pipe 28, on opposite sides of the main 29. The pipes 8 are connected with pipes 31 in which are located valves 32, the pipes 81 communicating with the rendering tanks 33 in which the odor-laden steam is created. The blow-off pipes for the rendering tanks 33 are shown at 34.
In the installation shown in Figure 5, there appears a fish cooker 36 to which a T 37' is connected as shown at 38, the outlet appearingat 39 and being under the control of a valve 40. The T 37 is connected at 41 to the pipe 8, the pipe 21 being joined to a header 42 in which is interposed a deodorizer 43 of the sort hereinbefore alluded to.
The outlet 11 for the valve casing 10 extends downwardly below the lower or-inner ends of the bafiie plates 16, and because the inspectionplates 4 are provided, the operator can see at any time that the discharge is proceeding through the outlet 11, the outlet being likely to be clogged up by particles of fish scrap carried over through the pipe 8 with the steam.
What is claimed is A structure of the class described, comprising a box-like main casing, inwardly and downwardly converging bafile plates secured in the main casing and extending from one side of the casing to the other, the battle plates being spaced apartat their lower ends to form a reduced slot extended entirely across the casing, the casing having a tapered lower end provided with a water outlet, a removable lid on the top of the casing, a water inlet car- 1 ried by the lid, the baffle plates being located between the lid and the outlet, the inlet and the outlet being in line, vertically, with the slot, a valve mechanism including a valve casing disposed between the baflle plates on the one hand, and the water inlet, on the other hand, the valve casing being located within o the main casing and having an. outlet which discharges in close relation to the lower ends of the batlie plates and below the slot, valve operating means accessible from the outside of the main casing and extended outwardly through the main casing from the valve casing, and a pipe connected to the valvecasing and extended out of the main casing.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aflixed our signatures.
JESSE W. PELPHREY. ARTHUR W. PELPHREY.
