` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEv GEORGEV. SHEFFILD, 0F EAST NEW YORK, N. Y.
`|MPROllEMENT IN THE METHODS OF UNlTlNG PIECES OF LEATHER, &.
Specification formingp'ar't of' Letters Patent No. 173,868, dated February 22, 187d; application tiled January 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
l Be it known that I, GEORGE V. SHEEEIELD, of East New York, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Uniting Pieces of Leather, 85o., of which the following is a specification: f
My invention consists of 'a new method of uniting pieces ofV leather, cloth, 86e., by looping an under thread through a. loop of the needlethread and'drawing the under-thread loop up tothe surface `by the needle-thread, thus quadrupling the lower thread in the work, and binding the same by the upper thread, and connecting these quadrupled threads from hole to hole by a thread 011 each side of the work.
The method is mainly designed for uniting" boot and shoe soles with a waxed thread, which, by so doubling in the work and securing by the .wax, makes a fastening of superior strength.
The drawing is a section of ,two pieces of leather sewed together by my improved stitch,
showing also the needle for the upper and pusher for the lower thread.
A and B are the two pieces of leather sewed together. O is the needle and C needle-thread,
to be inserted in the ordinary way, making a loop, D, on the under side, in which the under thread E is looped, as shown at F, by pusher J, or by au awl-hook or other eontrivance, which draws out and leaves the loop, after which theloop of the upper thread is drawn back flush with the-upper surface of the work, thus again doubling loop F, and at the same time drawing it up taut and looking it on the upper side.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and' desire to secure by LettersV Patent- The method of uniting two pieces of leather herein described, which consists in passing the loop F ofan under thread, E, through the loop D of an upper thread, C', first brought down through both pieces, the loop of upper thread being then drawn back ush with the upper surface of Work, as shown and described.
GEORGE V.` SHEFFIELD. Witnesses: Y
T. B. MosHER, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
