The present invention relates to improvements in 'end labels for tubular supporting rolls for cloth, or the like, and has for an object to provide a foldable label adapted to 5 be engaged inthe tubeend ina manner to close :theend of such tube, and at the same time provide an attractive label and finish "for the roll of clothwvound on the tube.

Anotherobject is to provide a label which may be readily inserted and removed, will be self-centering withinthe tube, and will be reliably held, through frictional engagement with the inner surface of the tube, against :accidental turning, displacement, or disen- ,gageinent. To this end, itis proposed to provide securing 'flaps adapted to be inserted in the tube under tension, and which when inserted will exert transverse pressure to frictionally engage the longitudinal edges of the flaps with-the inner surface of the tube.

Referring to the drawings, the tube 10, of heavy pasteboard, or the like, is adapted to have cloth or other material wound thereon, as shown in Fig. 1, and alabel device, according to my invention is inserted and retained at each endthereof. The label device, according to the present embodiment of the invention, comprises a disk 11, of card-board or the like, adapted to have advertising or other matter printed directly on its face, or applied by a label pasted thereon, and to the rearwardlside of which the attaching flap .member is secured.

The flap member is preferably blanked out i as a single flat piece of card-board, and includes a central portion 12 of rectangulargg form and flap portions 13 extending at opposite sides and having their longitudinal edges 14 diverging from said portion 12 to their outer ends. Score lines 15 are provided betweenthe portion 12 and said flap portions, about which the latter are adapted to have hinged movement'relatively to the portion 12, and centrally at the outer ends of the flap portions thereare provided longitudinal score lines 16, about which the outer ends are no "adapted to be bent or flexed into transverse angular relation. Asshown in Figs. 5 and 6,the score lines are at the inner surface, the tolding of the member being inwardly with secured to the rearward surfacejof the disk portion 11 by pasting, .or it may be stapled,

oraotherwise suitably secured. The relatively ilarge surface of the flaps-member" may have advertising, descriptive, or other matter relative to the goods, printed or otherwise applied thereon.

The disk 11 may be of a diameter adapted only to cover the end of the tube, or it may be of greater diameter, and the flap member is proportioned to the inner diameter of the particular sized tube to which the device is aptiguous to the tube surface and press the side edges 14 outwardly into frictional engagement with said tube surface. The edges 14 are so designed that in the engaged relation they have frictional-engagement along their entire lengths along substantially helical lines, the lines of engagement of the respective flaps converging ateach side. The label device is thus centered and frictionally held in its inserted position, the frictional engagement of the edges 14 along converging helical 'lines notonly'resisting outward pullon the device, but opposing turning thereof in the tube equally in either direction.

The convenience with which the device may be inserted and-removed permits the roll of cloth to be readily placed upon a mandrel, when desired, for winding off cloth, and also facilitates the marking of the label and the reading of any descriptive or other matter that may be applied to the flap member.

inwhich the disk 11 is of relatively large diameter and may serve as a reel or spool end or to conceal uneven winding of the cloth. The'flap member, in this embodiment, is secured by staples 17, and a label .18 is preferably pasted upon the face of thedisk to concealthe staples.

.- l haveillustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of the invention, but it will be obvious that changes may be made-therein, withinthe spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. A label, devicefor cylindrical tubular supports for cloth or the like, comprising a flat label member adaptedto engage and closea tube end, and-retaining meansat the a rear side of said member including a pairof 'iflat relatively wide flap portions hinged with respect tosaidflat label member along spaced and'parallel' elongated hingelines, said flap portions adaptedto be inserted in the tube ,to retain said label member with respect to said tube:-end,.thelongitudinal edges of said flap. portionsi constituting spacedfrictional engaging surfaces, said spaced hinges adapted to cooperate to rigidly support said label member with respect to said flap portions.

A label device for tubular supports for cloth or the like, comprising a label member adapted to engage and close a tube end, and retaining means at the rear side of said member including a pair of flaps hingedly connected to said member along spaced parallel lines, said hinged ends being of a width adapted to engage the inner surface of the tube, said flaps increasing in width toward their ends and adapted to be flexed transversely to frictionally engage within the tube to retain said label member with respect to said tube end.

A label device for tubular supports for cloth or the like, comprising a label member adapted to engage and close a tube end, and retaining means at the rear side of said mem-' ber including a pair of flaps hingedly c011- nected to said member along spaced parallel lines, said hinged ends being of a width adapted to engage the inner surface of the tube, said flaps increasing in width toward 4 their ends and adapted to be flexed transversely to frictionally engage within the tube, the edges of said flap being so formed as to engage along converging helical lines at each side to retain said label member with respect to the tube end.

4. A label device for tubular supports for cloth or the like, comprising a label member adapted to engage and close a tube end, and

retaining means at the rear side of said mem-'" ber including a flat attaching portion secured to said member and a pair of flat relatively wide flap portions hinged with respect to said fiat portion along spaced and parallel elongated hinge lines, said flap portions adapted to be inserted in the tube to retain said label member with respect to said tube end, the two longitudinal edges of each of said flap portions constituting spaced frictional engaging surfaces, said spaced hinges adapted to cooperate to rigidly support said label member with respect to said flap portion.

5. A label device or tubular supports for cloth or the like, comprising a label member adapted to engage and close a tube end, and

. retaining means at the rear side of said member consisting of a flat piece of card-board or the like, including a central attaching portion secured to said label member and oppositely extending flat relatively wide flap portions adapted to have hinged movement with respect to said attaching portion along spaced and parallel elongated axes, said flap portions adapted to be inserted in the tube to retain said label member with respect to said tube end, the two longitudinal edges of each of said flap portions constituting spaced frictional engaging surfaces, said spaced hinges
