Patented Dec. 3, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE W, JENCKES, OF. LAKEWOOD, RHCDE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR T D. M. WATKINS .00., INC.,'OF PROVIDENCE, 'RHODE ISLAND, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND CONNECTER FOR NECKLACES AND LIKE Application filed March 5,
This invention relates to a connecter for articles of jewelry such as necklaces, chains and the like and has for its object to provide a swivel connection for the separable ends of u a necklace or chain with swivelling members A further object of the invention is the grdoving oi the body to cause it to have a segmental appearance with the separate pieces of the body having their connection in. the grooves which form the segmental appearance so that the line of the connection of joint of the parts /will not be apparent."
With these and other objects in view, the invention. consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan or side view of the connecter.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the stud or male part of. the connector.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the socket part.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the threaded stud.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the swivel member.
Fig. 7 illustrates the swivel conneoter in use to connect the ends of a necklace about a persons neck.
Fig. 8 is a side or top view of a-modified shape of body member for the swivel connecter.-
In the use of swivel connecters for the separable ends of necklaces, or the like it is found that in some cases a bent end of a wire forming an eye, or the like is unsightly and will become injured with the ordinary strains to.
which the device may be subjected; and in order to avoid this difliculty, I have made the eye of the swivel member seamless and have also provided a collar just below'the eye to abut against the body of the swivel member to hide the opening thru which the shank of 1929. Serial No. 344,186.
at the same time formthis shoulder annular in shape to conform to the general segmental appearance of the body in order that the joints of the parts will not be readily apparent when connected in position; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these results may be accomplished.
With referenceto the drawings, 10 designates the stud or male portion of the body member having the non-threaded end of the stud 11 forced into the recess in body 10 so that there will be a tightnon-rotatable fit with the opposite threaded end 12 extending beyond the surface 13 of this part of the body member. The socket part 14 of the body member is provided with a threaded recess 15 to receive the protruding threaded end of the stud 12 by relative rotation of the parts 10 and 14 to tightly secure the two parts of the body together.
Each of the parts of the body member is provided with an opening 16 thru its end wall thru which extends the shank 17 of the swivel member 18 which has an eye or loop 19 to receive the end link of the chain and a shoulder 20 adjacent the eye to abut againt the end of the body and close the opening 16, which is 1 larger than the shank to provide a loose fit, while the inner end of the shank 17 is headed as at 21 so as to prevent withdrawal of the same from the body member; the head 21 of each of the swivel members operates in a space 22 between the end of the stud 11 and the end wall 23, 24 of the parts of the body member.
Each of the swivel members 18 is formed of one piece of material pierced to form the complete seamless eye or loop 19, thereby preventing any chance for bending of an un- "soldered eye to open and disrupt the same.
'desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A connecter for necklaces or the like comprising a member having a screw thread ed recess in one end thereof and an eye at the other end thereof, and a second member having a reduced projection at one end thereof and an eye at the other end thereof, one of said eyes being swivelled, said projection having continuous screw threads thereon for engagement with the screw threaded recess of said first member.
2. A connecter for necklaces or the like comprising a member having a screw threadec recess in one end thereof and an eye at the other end thereof, and a second member having a reduced projection at one end thereof and an eye at the other end thereof, both of said eyes being swivelled, said projection having continuous screw threads thereon for en agement with the screw threaded recess o said first member.
3. A connecter for the ends of a flexible article of jewelry, said connecter comprising a sectional body and swivel members arranged at each end thereof, each swivel member including an eye and a shoulder circular in cross section and means rotatably anchoring said eye in the respective section, each section formed to provide a seat in engagement with the respective shoulder and flaring symmetrically in ll directions from the seat to the center of t e bodymember, said seat being of a size to provide an engaging surface for substantially the full diameter of said shoulder.
4. A connecter for necklaces or the like comprising a sectional body member generally circular in cross section. a plurality of circular grooves in said member, the sections having their junctions or joints in one of said grooves, and swivel members at the ends of said body member having annular shoulders conforming to the general segmental appearance of said body member whereby the joints of the parts are inconspicuous.
5. A connecter for necklaces or the like comprising amember having a screw thread ed recess in one end and a swivelled eye at the other end thereof. a second member havmg a recess in one end and a swivelled eye at the other end thereof and a stud secured
