IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING SPRING-BEDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173.589, dated February 15, 1876; application filed November 27, 1875.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A.CoNDE, of

Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphial Vwhich it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a perspective. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectionof the bedstead when folded. Fig. 3 is a broken section of the bedbottoii, showin gthetruss-rodspassin g through the plugs in the end rails of the bedstead.

My improvements consist in the'novelconstruction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A designate the end rails of a bed or end B B are posts formed each in two sections, b b, hinged together at b', and pivoted to the ends AA at a. This construction permits the folding of the posts B B and their connecting-bars B1B2 'upon and under the slats, as shown in Fig. 2.'

C C are brace-rods, pivotedA at c to the posts B, and formed with hooked ends c', which enlrer crresponding openings in the side slats 85e., are metallic truss-rods extending between the end pieces, as shown, and fastened therein. These trusses sustain elastic coiled springs F, passing through wooden nubs, ff, inserted in the ends of said springs, the upper ends of said springs being inserted in the slats D, D',

&c. One or more of these coiled springs may be placed beneath each slat. Gr G represent flat metal springsfirmly fastened by rivets or equivalent means to the slats D D,&c., at g g, &c. rlhe opposite extremities of these springs are inserted in plugs H driven into suitable openings in the endsAA, the springs being rst placed in the plugs before the latter are driven.

By simply dispensing with the posts B B a very eifective spring-bottom will be obtained.

-The above-described con struction produces a very compact, strong, simple, and elastic folding bed, or a very perfect and effective spriug-bottoin. The legs, when standing, are rmly and eifectually braced; when folded they occupy but a small space, and so may be easily packed and transported. The described system of springs and trusses produces both firmness and elasticity, rendering the bed both comfortable and lasting.

. What I claim as my invention is- In a folding spring-bed, the posts BB formed in two sections,.hinged at b', and pivoted at a, so as to fold upon and under the slats, substantially as shown and described.

2. The trusses E E, fastened to the end rails or pieces A, and supporting spiral sp1-.in gs F, ou which rest slatsD and D', the slats D being fastened also to the ends A A, while the slats Dl do not extend from end to end.

3. The combination, with the wooden nubs f, of the metallic trusses E E, the latter passing through the former, as'shown and described.

4. In combination with the ends A A and slats D orD, the flat springs G G firmly fastened at both extremities to said ends and sla-ts, as shown and described.

5. The described construction and combination, with the ends A and springs G, of the plugs EI for fastening the latter to or in the former, substantially as set forth.
