MOP CONSTRUCTION Filed Sept. 24, 1928 7 I l i Ill liRi lHllliINllll JZZPOJfeZZJ Patented Nov. 12,1929
UNETEI) STATES JACOB HENRY POSTEL, OF SAN MATEO, v(ll-HIREDENIA 1 M01 CONSTRUCTION Application filed September 24, 1928. Serial No. 307,922.
This invention relates to mop construction and aims to provide a mop head wherein the mop strands are so secured that they will spread evenly over the surface on which the 5 mop is positioned eliminating wear at the sides of the mop strands as a result of the mop strands bending while in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mop head wherein the strands will be protected against contact with the baseboard or articles positioned on the surface being mopped, thereby greatly increasing the life of the mop.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means to guard against the mop strands working over the ends of the mop head. I
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment'of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view 30 through a mop head constructed in accord ance with the invention and taken on line 1-l of Figure 3.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the mop head.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the stand carrying bars or section of the mop head.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the mop head forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a metallic caslng 5 having downwardly inclined end portions 6 terminating in inwardly disposed flanges 7 that engage the ends of the bars or mop head sections 8 tosecure them in position.
The ends of the sections 8 are also inclined so that they will closely fit within the ends of the casing 5, there being provided securing nails 9 for securing thecasing to the sections 50 8. In the construction of the mop head the strands which are indicated by the reference character 10 are positioned over the sections 8, the strands being arranged transversely thereof, as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing.
In order that the strands will be prevented from sliding longitudinally of the sections, retainers 11 are provided adjacent to the ends of the sections, the retainers 11 embodying lengths of sheet metal bent upwardly and inwardly to overlie portions of the strands. These retainers also contact with the casing to hold the casing is spaced relation with the sections so that the mop strands will not be damaged by contact of the casing with the mop strands. I
Registering openings are formed in the sections forming the head, which openings accommodate the ends 12 of the handle securing device, nuts 13 being secured on the ends of the members 12 to hold the handle securing device in position. The handle is indicated by the reference character 14; and is formed with an opening to receive the extension 15 of the handle securing device. I
It might be further stated that the combined widths of the sections 8 are equal to the width of the casing 5, so that the sections 1 will tightly fit within the casing.
Nails 16 are arranged in the upper surface of the sections 8 and are disposed on opposite sides of the openings through which the ends I of the handle securing device are positioned so that the openings will be exposed at all times and the ends of the handle securing device may be readily positioned.
The caing 5 also includes flanges 18 formed along its longitudinal edges, which flanges overlie the outer surfaces of the sections 8 as clearly shown by Figure 2.
I claim:
1. A mop head including a casing, a series of mop strand carrying sections positioned within the casing, said sections and casing having registering openings, mop strands positioned on the sections, nails extending from the upper surfaces of the sections and arranged adjacent to the openings to hold the mop strands separated, adjacent to the open ings, a handle securing member extending through the openings to secure the sections in the casing.
2. A mop head including a casing, a series of longitudinally extending strand carrying sections arranged in parallel relation With each other, secured Within the casing, upwardly and inwardly extended members at the ends of each section and engaging the casing to hold the casing in spaced relation with the upper surfaces of the sections, mop strands positioned over the sections,' certain of the mop strands lying Within the spacing members, and a handle securing member connected With the head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto: afliXed my signature;
JACOB HENRY POSTEL.
