BRICK MAKING MACHINERY Filed Nov. 14, 1927 5 Shee ts-Sh'eet 5 I is Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT oF-FIcE BENJAMIN F. HAYDEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGN O R, TO THE BYLAND REALTY & CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, mo,
orcmomNA'rI, 01110, A COBIORATION or OHIO BRICK-MAKING MACHINERY Application filed November My invention relates to brick making machinery.
it is the object of myinvention to provide a machine for making brick, preferably of material having a substantial portion thereof of cement.
It is my object to provide a machine that will produce air-dried brick as distinguished from those that are primarilybaked.
It is my object to provide a machine'in which the weight of the parts will so form and consolidate the material being used that the surplus moisture will be expelled from the mixture, the proper shape and density will be accomplished and the quick drying of the article will be facilitated so that it will occupy the minimum of time in the process of production. I
It is a. further object to provide positive means for maintaining the mouldin elevated position. It is an object to provide means of uniformly distributing and delivering the material to be moulded to the forms.
Referring to the drawings: 1
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my machine.

ing of the chain when; the tamper descends. Referring to the drawings in detail, 1, 2, 3 and 4; designate four upright corner frame members which areconnected at the bottom and 6,
by fore and aft connecting members; 5 andat the top by fore and aft members, 7
and 8. I Intermediate of these frame members there is located a transverse platform 9, which are located vertical guide, rods 13. These guide rods are positionedin the platform 9 in the sleeves 14:. The mould frame 15 is guided on the rods through the sleevel6. The tamper frame 17, carrying the guided on these rods through the sleeve 19. The upper end ofthe rod terminates in either the sidemembers? or 8. On the side members 7. and 8there'is mounted a power shaft carrying a cam 21, which is adapted to. engage with the roller 22 pivotally mounted on the segmental rack 23, whose teeth 24 engage -with the corresponding teeth 25 of a similar segmental rack 26. I
These racks are pivoted on the rods 11 and 12 and are elevated with the cam 21 engaging the roller 22. Each rack is connected to an adjustable, link 27, the lower end of which is connected pivotally to the mould frame 15.
tempers 1 8, is also I Thus the elevation of the racks results in the elevation of the mould frame. When the mould frame is so elevated and it is desired 7 to maintain it in elevatedposition the supporting cam member 28, having a shoulder 29, is moved by itshandle 30 and a spring 31, which is connected to one bers, sothat the shoulder 29 is beneath the sleeve 16, as in Figure 3. This permits of the Withdrawal on the pallette 32 of the moulded products.
Whenthe. mould frame is in lowered position over the pallette and it is desired to load of the frame memthe mould frame with suitable plastic material for moulding, then the hopper car 33, having a supply trough 84, is moved over the frame on its wheels traveling on the tracks 86. The rear axle 37 serves as a driving axle for a drum 38 within thehopper, which actuates a belt 39 forming a moving bottom for the supply trough 34. The other end of the belt passes over theroller 40, pivotally mounted upon the stub shaft 41. This causes the material to be fed beneath the movable end wall 42 of the supply trough into the open-bottomed area 43, where it engages the moving impeller 44 adjacent the stationary front wall 45 of the hopper. The material passes out through the open bottom 46 into the mould frame 15. The impeller 44 is mounted on the axle 47 of the forward wheels. The hopper itself is moved bodily by means of the rack 48 carried on the side thereof,
which is engaged by the pinion 49 driven by the shaft 50 carried in the bracket 51 to meet the track 36.
The forward wall 42 of the supply trough is adapted to be moved to open position through the lever 52 and the spring 53. This forward wall 42 is pivoted at 54 on the side walls of the hopper car.
Referring to Figure 10, there will be seen the top plan view of the actuating mechanism for moving the hopper car into and out of charging position. The shaft 50 is driven by the pulleys 55 at either endthereof. These pulleys are provided with clutch arms 55 engaging the ably mounted upon the shaft 50. The lever 57, which, is pivoted uponthe bracket 58, is pivotally connected to the link 59. Its other end is pivotally connected to a second lever 60 carrying a second clutch sleeve 61 for engagement or disengagement with the clutch arm 62 of the second pulley 63. This lever 60 is pivoted upon the second bracket 64. Thus the movement of the lever 57 will clutch or declutch the shaft 50 to the alternate pulleys for alternate movement of the charging box forward or backward, as the movement in one direction would cause one clutch to engage and the movement in the other direction cause the other clutch to engage, and the first-mentioned clutch to be disengaged. The tamper members 18 are in any desired configuration for forming'briclts of the desired shape. They are suspended from a very heavy block 17. This block is moved upwardly by power and allowed todrop by gravity. The power elevation means consists of a chain 65, which is wound on a drum 66. This drum is connected by clutch 67 to a clutch face 68 of the actuating shaft 20. This shaft is driven by a suitable pulley 70.
Tn'order to hold the tamper in its elevated position, I provide a pair of swinging-supports 71 and 72, which are mounted upon the brackets 7 3 and 7 4 that arein turn pivoted clutch drum 56, which is slide on the vertical pivot'rods 75 carried in the lower bracket 7 6 and upper fore and aft members 7 and 8.
The brackets 71 and 72 have each connected thereto an interconnecting spring 77 to maintain them in inner tamper supporting position.
These brackets are swung outwardly with theirsupports by the links '78 and 79, which are pivoted thereto. These links are connected to an angular lever 80, pivoted at 81 to the transverse member 82 between the frame members and having a handle 83. hen the operator pulls the handle towards himself he moves the supports 71 and 7 from out of engagement with the tamper, allowing it to drop. This movement is against the resistance movement of the spring 77.
Method of operation the mould. This forward movement permits of the movable front wall of the hopper 42 being moved about the pivot 54, due to the influence of the spring 53, as the restraining influence of the stop bracket 53 has been removed.
The movement of the bottom 46 of the storage compartment of the hopper moves the plastic material into the discharge compartment 43, where it is engaged by the impeller 44. When the hopper is moves forwarl and dumps its contents it is returned to its initial position and the belt 39 is reversed in its movement, thereby stopping the discharge. This return is effected by disengaging the clutch 62 and engaging the clutch Upon the accomplishment of the loading of the mould the lever is pulled so that the tamper 18 may drop. I The tamper is elevated by causing the clutch 67 and 68, tl'u'ough the lever 68, to be engaged with the shaft 20 which serves to elevate the temper through the chain being wound on the drum 66. which is mou ed on theshaft 20. ll hen the tamper has been elevated the clutch can be disconnected as the spring pressed supporting arms or brackets 72 and 7 8 will be moved by the s iring '77 into engaging position.
It then becomes necessary tO'BlGVZttQ mould 15, and this is done by mov lever 21 so that the cam 21 carried shaft 20 will be moved laterally into p0!"- imsaeva 25, thereby moving the mould upwardly blHULIgll the agency of the rods 27, while the tamper holds the molded product on the platen. :Upon the movement to its uppermost position the stop 28 moves beneath the sleeve 16, holding the mould in elevated posi tion. The lever 21* can be relea d and the spring 21* will move the cam 2i into inoperative position. I
The platen can then be witlidrann with the moulded products resting upon it.
A brake for the rewinding mecl'ia-nism is provided consisting of a brake arm 8% hung on the transverse rod 85 on hooks :86. These rods art connected between the frame members. A shoe 87 is provided with a brake lining 88 which engages with the clutch drum 89 preventing the chain from rewinding if there is a sudden descent in return movement of the tamper.
