Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 173,524, dated February 15, 1876; application tiled July 23, 1875.
-To all whom t'may concern Be it known, that I, PHILLIP YOUNG, of Louisville, in'the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new shaft into sections,`to avoid, in reversing theL revolutions ofthe machinery, a great and unnecessary wear, as will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention. A represents the hangers, which may be placed in any vdesired position, and which are composed Ot' two double hangers, ct a', and two single hangers, b b, one .of the latter being placed at the outer ends off th'e'outer sections of the shaft. The shaft B is divided at the center ofthe double hangers a and a', soras to form tliree sections, the central one extendingt'rom the center of a to the center of a', carrying ou each end a fixed pulley, c c', aud in the middle, between the two hangers a a', the'driving Wheel or pulley C, which pulley may be connected by belt D with any machine desired.
Upon the inner ends of the outer sections of thev shaft B are the pulleys d d', revolving respectively with the section of the shaft to which they are firmly secured. Y
The outer sections ofthe shaftand the pulleys d d are for reversing the .revolutions of the machine, instead of four pulleys now in use, two of which are loose aud the other two tight. When the twist-belt is applied, 'in the hangers now in use, the pulley over which it runs makes twice as many revolutions as the shaft, while in my invention the pulley being secured can move at the speed ofthe shaft only. The'wear of the pulleysis consequently reduced to less than one-half. In the old construction the pulleys require a` renewal of Babbitt metal three or four times a year, while in a hanger of my invention the pulleys run for years without requiring such renewal.
