The present invention relates to improvements in sanding devices and more particularly to one designed for use in connection with motor vehicles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to be placed upon a motor vehicle, the construction being such that sand or other material is discharged in advance of the rear wheels of the vehicle to prevent skidding or to obtain traction when stalled or on slippery roads or streets.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that it can be quickly placed in operation by the driver of the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character so constructed that upon swinging an actuating lever the contents of the hopper will be discharged into chutes and from thence to points in advance of the rear wheels of the vehicle.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of con struction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of a motor vehicle, showing the position of the device with respect thereto.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a hopper which is mounted under the front seat 2 of the vehicle or in any other convenient location. The floor board 3 of the vehicle provides a bottom for the hopper and has formed therein a pair of discharge openings 4.
Chutes 5 are secured to the under surface of the board 3 and have openings 5 formed in their front sides, said chutes being disposed directly under the openings 4 so that the sand passing through said openings will gravitate into the chute. Each chute has connected thereto a hose 6which has its discharge end located in advance of a rear wheel so that the material discharged will be distributed prop erly for effective operation. It will, of course, be understood that steel tubing may be used in lieu of the hose, if found more desirable. f 7
Fixed to, the under surface of the board 3 are blocks 7 which have secured thereto metal plates 8, and pivotally connected to said metal plates are metal plates 9,the latter plates having blocks 10 carried thereby. The plates 8 and 9 have associated therewith the terminals of coil springs. 11 which are arranged to'surround the pivotal rods 12 of the plates. By providing the springs the same act to hold the blocks normally flush against the under surface of the floor board 3 soas to close the openings 4, thus preventing leakage of sand from the hopper 1. The forward ends of the plates 9 areprovided with arms 13and to which are connected the rear ends of the cables 14, said cables being disposed in diverging relation and having their forward ends secured to a turnbuckle 15, said turnbuckle being pivoted to the crank 16 formed upon the lower end of the shaft 17. I The shaft 17 is journaled in the floor board and extends upwardly and adjacent the front wall of the seat 2. The upper end of the shaft 17 is provided with a handle .18 to facilitate rotation of the shaft so that the crank arm will be shifted to pull upon the cables 14, which action will swing the blocks 10 downwardly so that the contents of the hopper will discharge into the chutes. The shaft 17 is journaled in a suitable bracket 19.
Fixed upon thefioor board 3 adjacent the crank 16 is a stop 20 which is adapted to limit the swinging movement of the crank 16 when the same is swung to open the openings 4, said stop holding the shaft- 17 in a position slightly past dead center- In this manner, the blocks can be held in their open position until the rotation of the shaft is reversed, and after which the springs 11 will cause the blocks 10 to move to position to close the openings 4. These blocks have mounted thereon pins 21 which serve to prevent clogging of the openings 4.
Mounted in the hopper and located between the openings 4, is a deflector 22 which will obviously serve to direct the contents of the hopper toward said openings.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation, and many at vantages of the herein described invention will be apparent tothose skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction,
may be resorted to without departing from" the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is: i
1. A sanding device for motor vehicles comprising ah'opper mounted upon the floor of the vehicle, chutes fixed to the floor below the hopper, said'fioo'r having-openin s therein for discharging sand from the hopper into the chutes, blocks-'pivotally' connected with the floor for normally closing the openings, a shaft supp'orted by the vehicle, andmeans connecting the shaftand'blocks for swinging the blocks open to permit passage of sand through the openings into the chutes, and means for discharging sand from the chutes.
2. A sanding device for motor vehicles comprising a hopper, chutes fixed to the floor of the vehicle below the hopper, said floor having openings thereinafiording communication between the hopper and chutes, blocks pivotally connected" with the floor for nornially closing the openings, a shaft carried by the vehicle, a turnbuckle connected to the shaft, cables connecting the turnbuckle and blocks, said blocks beingswingable to permit sand to pass through the openings into the chutes upon actuation ofthe shaft.
3. A sanding device for motor vehicles comprising a hopper, chutes fixed to the floor of the vehicle, said floor having openings therein, blocks pivotally connected with the floor, means for'yieldably'holding the blocks in position to close the openings,a shaft r'otat'ably supported by the vehicle and having a" crank upon its lower end, a turnbuckle connected tothe'crank, and cables connecting the turnbuckle'and blocks'to swing the blocks open upon actuation of the crank.
A sanding device for motor vehicles comprising a hopper mounted upon the floor of the vehicle, chutes' fixed to the floor, said floor having openings therein aiiording communication between the hopper and chutes, blocksnorinally closing the openings,-plates fined to'the blocks, said plates'beingpivotally and-yieldahly' connected with the floor,- said plates liaving arms, a ate rotatably moiintec upon the vehicle, a crank carriedhy the shaft, and means connecting the crank and arms for swinging the blo'ck's'open upon actuation of the crank; V p
5. A sanding device'comprisiiig a hopper having discharge openings, blocks'norniaily closing theopeiiings, chutesbelow the hopper,
