This invention relates to padlocks and has for an object the provision of arlock of this type which is simple and durable in construen tion, reliable and eficient in use, and which,

due to its construction, will resist efforts to force the lock.

Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a lock which will provide a practically unlimited number of key changes due to the character and arrangement of the tum- Y blers, the construction and arrangement of the latter being such as to receive the thrust or strain in an endwise direction, so that the tumblers may be made relatively thin and arranged in compact form.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and

pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of a lock constructed in accordance with the invention with one section of the case removed and the shackle eX- tension shown in section, the lock being in locked position.

formed of a pair of complemental sections 10 which are recessed to accommodate the lock at one end with a socket 15 which rotatably Y receives the adj acent end of the shackle. The extension 14 has a sliding iitwithin the case and is non-rotatable and carries spaced pins 16 which engage an annular groove 17 so that a swiveled connection is provided.' The extension 14 is provided with an opening 18 which receives a spring 19 and the latter is tensioned to force thefshackle outward when saidA shackle is released.

Tn order to release the shackle a' key 27 is provided.; This key is formed at oneend witha numberof steps 28, there being a step for each of the tumblers`23. The key is inserted within thelock through a slot 29so that the steps engage the locking plates or' tumblers. vAs the key is forced inward the inclined portions 22 will be withdrawn from the path ofthe shoulder 21 so that theshackle will be released. In order to preventythe shoulders or stops 25' of the tumblers from engaging the shoulder 26 and thus prevent outward movement of thev shackle, the key 2 7 is proyided with a shoulder or shoulders 30 which engage the lockccase to limit inward movement of the key. Should the wrong key be used in the lock, one or more of the tumblers would be moved pivotally a sufficient distance when the inclinededge 22 iswithdrawn from the extension 14 to cause the shoulder or stop 25 `to engage the shoulder 26 and thus hold the shackle against outward movement.

In order to hold the shackle against accidental inward movement, the shackle is provided with a groove 3l which is adapteclto,y receive a guide pin 32 carried by the case, and when the shackle is in the position shown in Figure 2, it is necessary to rotate the shackle before the short leg can enter the socketI 12,A rlhe shackle is alsoy provided with a recess?! which engages the pin 32 to guide the, short leg of the shackle into the socket.
